What is The Hadley School for the Blind? Hadley is a distance education school that offers tuition-free programs to thousands of individuals who are blind or visually impaired and their families. The school also offers affordable continuing education courses to professionals and service providers working in the blindness field. Where is the Hadley School? Right in your town. Through distance education, we come to you! Hadley students live in all 50 states and more than 100 countries. Students communicate with Hadley via mail, phone, fax and email. The school is headquartered in Winnetka, Illionios, a suburb of Chicago. What does distance education mean? Distance education means that you study in your home or office at your convenience. Course materials arrive in the mail or via the Internet. You consult with your instructors through mail, email, fax and a toll-free telephone number (U.S. and Canada). Does Hadley offer courses online? Yes. In fact, more online courses are being added through our ehadley initiative. While many courses are still offered in braille, audio or large print and sent through the mail, email submission of assignments is encouraged.

What courses does Hadley offer? Our course listing includes more than 100 courses across many interest areas. Topics include braille reading and writing, business skills, languages, technology, independent living, academics and leisure activities. Who is eligible to take Hadley courses? We offer four educational programs to four distinct audiences. Look inside this brochure for specific program and eligibility information. Must I know braille to take a course? No. Many Hadley courses are offered in audio, large print and online. Many courses also are offered in Digital Talking Book format. If you d like to learn braille, you can choose from several Hadley courses. Is the school accredited? Yes. The Hadley School has been accredited by the Accrediting Commission of the Distance Education and Training Council since 1958. When can I enroll? Today. We have year-round open enrollment no waiting for the next semester. Call the school for enrollment information or visit our Web site, www.hadley.edu, to apply online.

1 Adult Continuing Education (ACE) You are eligible to apply for enrollment in the ACE Program if you are legally, progressively or functionally visually impaired (meet vision eligibility requirements); you are age 14 or older; and you are able to read and understand courses written in English at the high school level. Why Enroll? Learn to read and write braille Adjust to life after vision loss Enhance independent living skills Improve employability and business skills Explore enriching activities Discover the joys of lifelong learning When retinitis pigmentosa caused his vision to deteriorate, Gerald Tomasi turned to Hadley. If it weren t for Hadley s braille, independent living and computer courses, I don t think I could live by myself, he says. The most important thing Hadley has taught me is that nothing is impossible. The impossible might just take a little longer.

2 High School (HS) You are eligible to apply for enrollment in this HS Program if you are legally, progressively or functionally visually impaired (meet vision eligibility requirements); reside in the U.S.; are at least 14 years old; and able to read and understand courses written in high school level English. She says, Hadley showed me where to start.

3 Family Education (FE) It doesn t seem as though you would develop a personal connection through distance education, but Hadley instructors are like a family of support helpful and understanding and full of useful information. Jennifer O Neill, FE student You are eligible to enroll in the FE Program if you are a parent or grandparent of a blind or severely visually impaired child or you are a spouse, adult daughter or son, or adult sibling of a blind or severely visually impaired adult. As Hadley s courses are offered worldwide, it is important that you can read and understand courses written in English. Why Enroll? Learn to read and write braille Foster the development of a child with a visual impairment Support your family member s adjustment with vision loss

4 Hadley School for Professional Studies (HSPS) You are eligible to enroll in the HSPS Program if you are a professional, volunteer or service provider who works with visually impaired individuals or if you are currently enrolled in a blindness-related university program and can read and understand courses written in English. Why enroll? Sharpen existing skills or acquire new ones to work more effectively with your clients or students Familiarize yourself with Hadley s distance education courses Study conveniently anytime, anywhere Most courses offered online for easy access Earn Continuing Education Units (CEUs) I m grateful for the impact Hadley courses have had on my ability to help visually impaired children. I know the techniques to guide them toward a successful life. Sherry May, HSPS student
