REY PERALES MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP On August 6th, 2007, the National Plasterers Council lost a great friend and respected colleague in REYMONDO Rey PERALES. REYMUNDO "Rey" PERALES was born October 14, 1951 in Miami, Florida. In 1989, he opened Quality Pool Plastering, Inc., and was the proud owner from that day forth. He loved the pool business and was an honest, wellrespected man in the industry. The Rey Perales Memorial Scholarship Fund was created by the Board with the intention of keeping the memory and spirit of Rey alive within our hearts, and within the NPC. It is the purpose of this scholarship fund to provide annual college scholarships to the children of employees of NPC Member Companies. Scholarships are announced in January and awarded each year at the NPC National Conference in February. Many lives have been touched by Rey in the past, and with this endowment his memory will continue to touch many more in the future. ELIGIBILITY TO APPLY FOR THE SCHOLARSHIP Applicants must be a legal son or daughter of an employee of a Member Company in good standing (any membership category) of the National Plasterers Council. Applicant must be at least a Senior in High School or no more than a Junior in College to apply. Applications are available online at www.npconline.org. REYMUNDO "Rey" PERALES nació el 14 de octubre de 1951 en Miami, Florida. En 1989, abrió Quality Pool Plastering, Inc., y fue el orgulloso propietario desde ese día en adelante. Le encantaba el negocio de la piscina y era un hombre honesto y muy respetado en la industria. El Fondo de Becas Memorial por Rey Perales fue creado por la junta con la intención de mantener la memoria y el espíritu del Rey viva en nuestros corazones, y dentro de NPC. El propósito de este fondo de becas es para proporcionar becas universitarias anuales a los hijos de los empleados que son miembros de la empresa de NPC. Las becas serán anunciadas en enero y otorgan cada año en la Conferencia Nacional de NPC en febrero. REY PERALES MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP Application and Instructions PURPOSE OF THE SCHOLARSHIP It is the purpose of the scholarship fund to provide annual college scholarships to the children of NPC Members and their employees. The dollar amounts of the scholarships and number granted will be determined by the Scholarship Committee annually, based on the available funds. The range of dollar amounts will be a minimum of $500.00 to a maximum of $5,000.00. Scholarships will be announced in January of each year and will be awarded at the National Plasterers Conference the following February. ELIGIBILITY TO APPLY FOR THE SCHOLARSHIP Applicants must be a legal son or daughter of an employee of a Member Company in good standing (any membership category) of the National Plasterers Council. Applicant must be at least a Senior in High School or no more than a Junior in College to apply. Applications can be obtained online at www.npconline.org SCHOLASTIC STANDING Applicants applying as entering Freshman must have been accepted as a full-time student, as defined by that institution, at an accredited college or community college and must have maintained a scholastic grade point average of 3.0 or better for the two (2) years of High School study preceding their application; or if applicants are currently enrolled in an accredited college or community college, they must have carried a minimum of ten (10) hours credit or equivalent and have maintained a cumulative 3.0 grade point average. Applicants shall provide documentation of the institutions letter grade equivalency for any grade point averages submitted. Transcripts should be mailed to the NPC Scholarship Committee directly from the school. LETTERS OF RECOMMENDATION All applicants must furnish two (2) letters of recommendation. Letters should address the student s scholastic ability, character and worthiness to receive a merit award. Letters should be from the following: a) A professor or teacher, or b) An employer, or c) An advisor from a volunteer or extracurricular activity. Letters should be sent directly to the National Plasterers Council by the author or, if submitted by the student, in a sealed envelope signed by the author over the seal. All letters must be received by December 31 st, 2015, or the application is considered incomplete and will not be reviewed by the selection committee. THE APPLICATION AND DEADLINE All applications and other required materials, with the exception of the Research Essay, must be received at the National Plasterers Council by the close of business on December 31 st, 2015 in order to be considered for the upcoming academic year. The completed Research Essay must be submitted for receipt by the National Plasterers Council by close of business on December 31 st, 2015. Applicants who are chosen to receive a scholarship will be notified no later than February 1 st, 2015. One application per applicant is allowed. TRANSCRIPTS AND TEST SCORES

a) Applying as a High School Senior: A certified copy of the student s transcript for the preceding two (2) years must be included and copies of the student s SAT/ACT or other generally accepted test service scores. b) Applying as a College Freshman: A certified copy of the student s previous semester grades. If the applicant is not a previous recipient of this scholarship, include a certified copy of the high school transcript and copies of the student s SAT/ACT or other generally accepted testing service scores. c) All Others: A certified copy of the student s current college transcripts. Please make a request with your institution to have an official transcript mailed directly to the National Plasterers Council. Transcripts must be received no later than December 31 st, 2015 or the application is considered incomplete and will not be reviewed by the selection committee. ESSAY REQUIREMENT A researched Essay Paper in English answering one (1) of the two (2) following questions must be submitted in Modern Language Association (MLA) Format. The paper must be at least 1000 words and no more than 1500 words. A bibliography (work cited page) must be included, but is not included in the overall word count of the paper. Plagiarism is not allowed and is reason for disqualification. Essay must be received by December 31 st, 2015. a) Pool Safety: What programs and initiatives are in place locally, state wide, and on a national level to help promote pool safety? From your research, which programs do you feel are the most effective? What is your recommendation for promoting pool safety? b) Water Conservation: Drought conditions plague many parts of the United States. What steps can the pool industry take to proactively address water conservation issues? AWARDED SCHOLARSHIPS The Scholarship Committee shall base its awards equally on the following three areas: a) Scholastic Achievement b) Character c) Research Paper Awards shall be transmitted to the academic institution of choice for the summer or fall Semester of study during the year awarded. Failure to provide institution information where you have been accepted by June 1 st of the year awarded may be grounds for forfeiture of the award. Any award funds not used for whatever reason must be returned to the National Plasterers Council within the year received. Awards are solely the decision of the Scholarship Committee which will be reviewed in a blind format so no committee member will be able to identify an applicant. All awards are final. The Board of Directors and the Scholarship Selection Committee will invite first-time award recipients to attend the National Plasterers Council s Annual Conference to receive his or her award. The member company sponsoring the student is expected to assist the student in their expenses to travel to and from the presentation at the NPC National Conference.
