2. Contents and objectives of the program The aim of the program is to work at the intersection between China s long-term structural transformations in socio-political, economic and cultural terms, and those particularly salient recent trends that inform international debate at the present time. Specifically, this year s Summer School will parse the national, regional and global impact of reforms launched at the 3 rd and 4 th Plenary Session of the 18 th Central Committee of the CPC in 2013 and 2014. The first OrizzonteCina Summer Symposium a new stand-alone international event embedded in the School s program, supported by the OrizzonteCina e-journal will focus on the New Silk Road strategy, and China s westward projection through Central Asia. To secure pluralism of disciplinary and intellectual perspectives, TOChina Summer School faculty members include both academics and policy experts, from a variety of fields, including Economics, Economic History, International Political Economy, International Relations, Political Philosophy and Culture, Political Science, and Sociology. In-class activities run from Monday to Friday from 9.30 am to 5.30 pm, featuring lectures, seminars, extensive Q&A sessions and TOChina s renowned scenario-making exercise. The OrizzonteCina Summer Symposium takes place on Saturday 4 th July. The TOChina Summer School is held at the Luigi Einaudi Campus of the University of Torino and at the Torino World Affairs Institute. The program is suitable for both those wishing to study the domestic aspects of China s politics and for participants intending to explore the rapidly evolving dynamics of Asian and global geopolitics and economics. For those looking for insight into future career options, the TOChina Summer School offers a unique opportunity to inquire with senior scholars who are often in charge of PhD programs in their country, and affiliated to a variety of organizations. The cherished informal sessions that TOChina faculty members accept to have with participants after class are a trademark of TOChina s hands-on approach. Page 2 of 10

Details on the instructors and the contents of the program may be found in the presentation available at http://www.tochina.it/training/tochina-summer-school. For any enquiry concerning the program the TOChina Program Manager, Mr. Kavinda NAVARATNE, may be reached at summerschool@tochina.it. 3. Applications and selection criteria Up to 50 participants will be admitted to the 2015 TOChina Summer School. Competition to secure a place in this program can be very intense: early application is strongly recommended. There are two admission cycles: applications submitted between March 9 and April 12, 2015 will be reviewed by April 20; applications submitted between April 13 and May 24 will be reviewed by June 1. No applications will be accepted beyond May 24, 2015. Online applications open on Monday March 9, 2015. Applicants are requested to: 1. fill in the online application form; 2. upload their updated résuméor CV; 3. upload an official enrolment letter/certification testifying their current student status (for students only); 4. upload an academic transcript (this can be produced as a single document together with the enrolment certification, see previous point) (for students only); 5. upload a scanned copy of their passport (only the page containing identity information); 6. print, sign, scan and upload the declaration of residence outside Torino (only for students applying for a FREETORINO scholarship). Upon receiving candidates application materials, the TOChina Program Manager will verify that compulsory requirements are met and pass their application package on to the Admissions Committee, which will be appointed by the Director of the Department of Culture, Politics and Society of the University of Torino, where the TOChina System is based. Page 3 of 10

Successful applicants receiving an offer must formally accept it and send proof of fees payment (direct bank transfer) via email to the TOChina Program Officer at summerschool@tochina.it by the set deadline (see below, and the Key Dates in 2015 section of the program website). Upon receiving these, the applicant will be officially enrolled in the program. Applicants who should fail to send such confirmation and proof of fees payment by the set deadline will have their offer withdrawn. Any newly-available place will be offered to the highest-ranking applicants not selected in the first round. However unlikely, technical failures can never be entirely prevented: applicants are encouraged to apply as early as possible and contact the TOChina Program Manager directly via email, should they fail to receive confirmation that their application has been received within 3 working days. No complaints based on technical ICT issues will be accepted for failure to provide all materials required to be admitted to selections. Tuition fees range between EUR 400.00 and EUR 800.00, depending on the type of applicant (early bird, student, professional ). Please see the Fees and Scholarship section of the program website for further information. All successful applicants must pay their full fees. Students who are awarded a ZEROTASSE scholarship will have their fees reimbursed, provided they have met the relevant conditions (see what they are in the box to the left of the Fees and Scholarship section of the program website). Students who are awarded a FREETORINO scholarship will also have their fees reimbursed, provided they have met the same conditions, while half-board accommodation will not require any payment on their part and will be immediately available upon their arrival in Torino. Applicants may be called for an interview before a final decision on their application is made. Public notice will be given of the outcome of the admission process: an official ranking will be posted on the website of the Department of Culture, Politics and Society (http://www.didatticacps.unito.it > Programmi Internazionali > Summer Schools > TOChina Summer School). Page 4 of 10

All candidates will be notified of the outcome of their application at the earliest possible time. The TOChina Summer School is designed for highly motivated students and professionals looking for one of the world s best intensive programs focusing on the politics, society, political economy and foreign policy of contemporary China. A careful selection is carried out in order to make sure that the School s working environment is as dynamic and challenging as possible. The Admissions Committee focuses on the following factors in reaching its decisions: 1. the applicant s capacity to make a credible claim for a proficient research/professional career with China; 2. sound academic credentials and fluency in English; 3. individual potential as expressed by the applicant s CV; 4. the candidate s motivation as articulated in the personal statement (300 words, within the online application). Applications are welcome from any professional or student who is in possession of the required qualifications. These are a Bachelor honours degree at 1 or 2:1 level (or an equivalent European title, such as the Laurea triennale for Italian students with a minimum grade of 100/110) and full command of the English language. Special consideration will be given to applicants who can demonstrate their English ability in the following ways: coming from a country where English is an official language; having studied at university level in English, as shown on the transcript uploaded in the Online Application form; having studied English at school (e.g., GCSE, A-Level, International Baccalaureate ) and achieved good grades; Page 5 of 10
