Group Scholarships Raising Awareness and Fundraising Purpose of the scholarship fund: A large component of the mission of alumni groups is to fundraise for an endowed scholarship for a student from their area/unit. Scholarships not only provide financial assistance to outstanding students, but also provide a wonderful opportunity for alumni group and university publicity in the local community. How to donate: To assist in the effort, the USF Alumni Association has created a Group Scholarships webpage to allow people to easily donate and support your group scholarship. This page lists all active group scholarship funds and link directly to a giving page where the donor can give the amount of their choice. All donors will receive a thank you letter from the Alumni Association and a receipt that can also be used for tax purposes from the USF Foundation. The Alumni Association is not permitted to share the name of the donors with the alumni groups. How to draw awareness to your fund: Include a brief description of the scholarship fund purpose and a link to the giving page in email blasts. Promote the scholarship fund on social media and include link to giving page. Discuss the need for scholarship donations and the impact scholarships have on students at events. Incorporate a donation component into event ticket sales (work with your alumni liaison concerning all ticketed events). Conduct an annual or biannual weeklong effort to raise scholarship funds. Running a week long fundraising effort: Selecting a week: As a leadership team select a week well in advance. Make sure that the team has time that week to commit to conducting the efforts. For some groups it may make sense to include an event during this week or choose a specific week due to an already existing event. What to do during the week: Kick off the week with an email blast letting alumni know about your efforts. Explain the purpose of the scholarship fund and let them know how it will make a difference in the lives of students. Encourage them to make a donation today and follow-you on social media. Let them know how they can help you spread the word by forwarding this email and reposting on their own social media accounts. Be sure to send a thank you email at the end of the week. You may or may not want to include the number of donors and total donations. Also be sure to let everyone know they can donate anytime throughout the year and provide giving link.

Sample schedule: Monday: Announcement email and Facebook post Tuesday: Facebook/Twitter post Wednesday: Facebook post Tuesday: Facebook post Friday: Final Facebook post and thank you email Possible program enhancements: Matching donations: A matching donation can be a great motivation for giving. The group may want to try and find someone to match the donations made during the week long effort. This can be an individual, group of individuals or a company. The donor(s) can match up to a set amount (ex. Company X will match all donation made this week up to $1000) or match all donations made during week. The leadership team as a group may also offer to match a set number of donations. For example, if five leadership team members each pledged $50 together they could match up to $250 for a total of $500 as long as a minimum of $250 in donations are made that week. Corporate matches: Many companies match charitable donations. Some as much as three to one! It can t hurt to remind people to check and see if their company will match their charitable donation to USF. Materials to help you during your efforts: Announcement email: Hello AREA NAME Bulls, Your GROUP NAME is excited to announce that today kicks off our first ever scholarship fundraising campaign. We have recently established a scholarship fund that once endowed will support a student from right here in AREA NAME (note: societies will need to alter this language). While you may already be familiar with some of USF s scholarship programs, you probably aren t aware of the truly great impact even a small scholarship can have on a student s life. We can t say it any better than this student that recently received a similar Alumni Association managed scholarship. Thanks to your generous donation it will be possible for me to attend school without the burden of financial struggles weighing me down as the opportunity to become a professional in the workforce in the near future. We all remember being a student at USF and some of the struggles we faced along the way. Perhaps some of use even received a scholarship that helped ease some of those tough times. This is our chance as AREA NAME Bulls to give back and support one of our own.

Right about now you are probably asking how you can help and where you can donate. Great questions! You can help by sharing this message with your friends. Forward the message and the donation link, or even just tell people about our efforts. Help us spread the word! We ve also made it easy for you to donate online. FRIDAY: It s not too late to participate in our scholarship fundraising week! Help us help a student from right here in LOCATON/UNIT. Visit our donation page at LINK to give now! Thank you to everyone who has given and supported our efforts this week! Scholarship quotes: Feel free to utilize any of these quotes in your promotion efforts. All quotes were given by students who are recipients of Alumni Association managed scholarship funds. By awarding me this scholarship, you have made me able to focus more on learning in school instead of financial availability. Your generosity has inspired me to work harder not only for myself for others around me. Having this scholarship will make focusing on my education easier as I will not have to worry about meeting financial requirements. I have definitely gained confidence in myself knowing that others such as kind donors also believe in my skills and educational endeavors enough to invest in me. My future success and goals would not even be a thought if it was not for your generous efforts of providing me with funds to begin my journey. I am very grateful and appreciative of all the opportunities that the scholarship has opened for me. Thanks to your generous donation, you have lightened my financial burden which allows me to focus more on academics and less anxiety that plagues every college student that pays for college out of pocket. Your donation has shown me that there are people out there besides my parents that care about my education and are inclined to help others. I felt so welcomed and taken care of here at USF, and every person I have talked to is so genuine about helping me to be the best I can be to fulfil my dreams for the future. It is truly because of you, and your generosity and care for the well-being and dreams of every student that allows me to say I am happiest I ve ever been with my decisions. This scholarship helps me to focus on my studies and be involved in the USF Community.

Thanks to your generous donation it will be possible for me to attend school without the burden of financial struggles weighing me down as the opportunity to become a professional in the workforce in the near future. Donations like these makes it possible for students with lower incomes families like I, to have an opportunity in finding careers that surpass high school and middle school educations. I appreciate the opportunity this scholarship gives me; receiving the award is a great help in allowing me to begin classes this fall. Thank you for the scholarship and for your support. I would like to let you know this association is doing a fantastic job at providing students an opportunity at a better education. I want thank you and everyone in the USF Alumni Association that had an important role in deciding the recipients of this scholarship and to the donors who made this scholarship possible. As an awardee, I am humbled by the financial assistance that the Alumni Association offered, and I am grateful for every other benefit that I enjoy as a part of the student chapter of the national USF Alumni Association. I want to thank you again, and I promise not to let your efforts go to waste. Because of your efforts, I can continue to give my full attention to my studies rather than spending all of my time at work. Other resources: There are a number of fundraising tools, including an outline to assist your group in developing a fundraising plan, online in the USF Alumni Association s volunteer resources section of the website. Please be sure to utilize all of these available tools and complete any necessary online forms and paperwork.
