W illiam David Bevirt passed away on January 17, 2012 at Casa de la Luz Hospice, Tucson, Arizona. He was born July 29, 1928 in St. Louis, Missouri to William and Jennie (Roehm) Bevirt. He is survived by his loving wife Joan (Kern), whom he married March 22, 1973 in St. Louis, Missouri. Dave attended Washington University (MO), served in the U.S. Army (Korean Conflict) and was President of D.F. Edwards Heating & Air Conditioning Co., St.Louis, Missouri. He moved to Alexandria, Virginia and was employed by SMACNA, a trade association, and in 1972 became involved with NEBB. He served as co-administrator of NEBB starting in 1976 and handled all financial and technical activities. He was part of the NEBB Board of Directors from 1976-1993. He was then the Technical Director and later the Director of Research for NEBB. In addition to representing NEBB on related ASHRAE Committees, Dave Bevirt was elected as the President of the American Council for Construction Education (ACCE) in 1981 and reelected in 1982. Through Dave s involvement with ASHRAE, he was instrumental in including NEBB in standards as they were being revised. In the picture, facing the camera, (L to R): Dave Bevirt and Lester Lang. In 1983, Dave Bevirt wrote the 768 page Environmental Systems Technology. At the same time he was completing the Procedural Standards for Testing Adjusting, Balancing Environmental Systems with new information that included full size Test Report Forms, duct design tables and charts, hydronic piping tables, steam and refrigeration piping tables, and expanded procedures and instrumentation data. In 1986, Dave was involved in the completion of the Testing, Adjusting, and Balancing Manual for Technicians. This manual continues to be a highly regarded educational text for training testing, adjusting and balancing technicians as well as a comprehensive reference source that is still used at many TAB jobsites. InMemoriam_Book_C.indd 4-5 During his tenure with SMACNA, Dave served as the Assistant Executive Vice President and then concurrently as SMACNA Director of Research and NEBB Co-Administrator. Prior to that, he spent 25 years as a mechanical contractor and consulting engineer since 1952, and joined SMACNA in 1948. He was a member of the SMACNA National Board of Directors from 1965 to 1972, and National Treasurer from 1970 until he joined the SMACNA national staff in 1972. In 1990, Dave and Joan moved to Tucson, Arizona and established an office in his home. Joan Bevirt agreed to provide part-time secretarial service and ended up typing all the new and revised NEBB Technical publications until 1999. or to Casa de la Luz Hospice, 7740 N. He traveled the world giving technical lectures and also wrote some 40 technical books on Environmental Systems Technology, Heating and Air-conditioning, Sound and Vibration, Clean Rooms, Duct Design, and others. His awards and honors include the award of Fellow from ASHRAE, election to the SMACNA College of Fellows, and the NEBB Hightower Distinguished Service Award. In Arizona, Dave and Joan became charter members of the Oro Valley United Church of Christ. Dave was also a member of the Oro Valley American Legion Post #132 and many school and business organizations, as well as past president of the Sun City Kiwanis. Anyone in the area is invited to attend the Celebration of the Life of David Bevirt at a memorial service on July 7th, 2012 at 11 a.m., at the Oro Valley United Church of Christ, 1401 East Conquistador Way, Oro Valley, AZ.
