FAMU Southern California Alumni Association 2012 Scholarship Application February 16, 2012 Dear Applicant: Thank you for your interest in the Florida A&M University Southern California (SoCal) Alumni Association s scholarship program. Our Chapter is a non-profit with a mission to participate as a partner with the university in supporting its continued success through student recruitment, alumni retention, expansion, financial support, public relations and community outreach to California candidates. Founded in 1887, FAMU itself has a rich history of serving Florida and the nation for over 125 years. It is the nation s largest Historically Black College and holds the distinction of being named College of the Year in 1997 by Time Magazine and Princeton Review. FAMU also graduates more African Americans than any other university in the United States. It is a perennial leader in the recruitment of National Achievement Scholars and produces more African American pharmacists, teachers, journalists, and engineers than any other university in the country. In addition, the SoCal Chapter has raised more than $880,000 and provided scholarships to over 160 California students attending FAMU. In addition to scholarships, we continue to support FAMU through various activities, including student recruitment events and donations to the university. We continuously focus our scholarship awards on recipients from California communities. All applications should be returned and postmarked by June 8, 2012 to the Attention of the Scholarship Committee. All scholarship recipients and their parents will be invited to attend the chapter s annual Summer Scholarship Picnic in July 2011 where awards will be presented to students during a special ceremony. All students who are unable to attend the picnic will be notified of their scholarship award by mid-summer. All candidates should keep in mind that this is a process. We will be in correspondence with scholarship applicants and recipients throughout the 2012-2013 school year. Therefore, on the application please specify whether you would like current and future correspondence to be forwarded to your mailing address or your permanent address. Please also make sure that we have your current cell phone number and email address. If you move, go on internship, or are otherwise not reachable at the address of choice, please contact us immediately in order to update your information. Unless otherwise specified, we will default all correspondence to your permanent address. If you have any questions, please do not hesitate to email the FAMU SoCal Alumni Scholarship Committee at famusocal@gmail.com. Sincerely, Michelle Davis Scholarship Chair
