FIRST-YEAR WRITING OVERVIEW 2014-15 As part of the application process, many Common Application Member Institutions ask short answer and essay questions to learn more about each applicant. The short answer and/or essay questions can be found in one of two places: on the Member Questions page or within the Writing Supplement. The following is a list of institutions that have short answer and/ or essay questions as part of their First-Year application and where those questions appear. Keep in mind that some short answer and essay questions are required. This means that all applicants are required to provide a response to the question prior to the submission of the application. Some short answer and essay questions are conditional. These conditional questions are required for applicants depending on responses to earlier questions, specific majors, or areas of interest. Lastly, some short answer and essay questions are optional. This means that an applicant may decide whether or not they wish to provide a response to the question.
