AGILITY FOR CHANGING NETWORKS In a changing communications world, service providers are enhancing the capacity and efficiency of their access networks. They must meet demand for new packet-based services and maintain guaranteed service delivery. As Ethernet becomes more prevalent, the networks must evolve to deliver it efficiently and cost-effectively. Fujitsu has developed the next generation of packet optical networking platforms specifically to meet these emerging challenges and smooth the transition to connection-oriented Ethernet services. A Whole New Class of Optical Edge System The CDS (Compact Density System) enables service providers to deliver business Ethernet and legacy services over their existing network infrastructure. In the competitive telecommunications industry, service providers cannot afford the cost of deploying and operating networks specifically for different services. By consolidating support for multiple service types onto a single network infrastructure, the CDS reduces costs for both network equipment and ongoing operation. Compact and modular, the CDS supports a wide array of Ethernet and SONET/SDH interfaces. It incorporates advanced rate shaping and traffic management and aggregation, to provide guaranteed connection-oriented Ethernet delivery, while supporting existing revenue-bearing services. The CDS delivers both: Agile packet edge services, traditionally found only in high-end, feature-rich access service elements Efficient multiservice support for packet-based Ethernet as well as traditional SONET/SDH Carrier-Grade Quality For more than 20 years, Fujitsu has built dependable, scalable optical networks for customers of all types and sizes. Fujitsu has set the standard for performance, reliability and carrier-grade quality. The CDS is designed to be deployed by local and national carriers, cable companies, wireless service providers, public utilites and government agencies. EFFICIENT, MODULAR, HIGH-VALUE The CDS consists of a common two-slot chassis and a range of interface units to meet a variety of business applications, traffic capacity requirements and price points. Service providers can leverage its modular architecture to enhance their business services and optimize their access network. This innovative platform smoothes the transition to a packet-centric network architecture by enabling next-generation Ethernet services while preserving the integrity of legacy services. Key Technical Advantages Two-slot modular design High-density Ethernet interfaces Connection-oriented Ethernet transport Advanced traffic prioritization and traffic management Robust Ethernet link and service OAM Protected Ethernet delivery with link aggregation Diverse interface options for Ethernet and SONET/SDH services Mix-and-match packet and legacy services Key Network Benefits Consolidates multiple access boxes into a single edge platform Delivers high-bandwidth Ethernet services Delivers guaranteed QoS and SLAs Reduces equipment space requirements Leverages and extends existing optical network Transitions to Ethernet and packet-based services Maintains support for existing services Lowers operational costs PRESERVE LEGACY NETWORKS PACKET EDGE SERVICES REDUCE CAPEX/OPEX SPACE SAVINGS CONSOLIDATE MULTIPLE BOXES MODULAR DESIGN FOR FLEXIBLE SERVICES THE WINNING COMBINATION KEY NETWORK BENEFITS SONET/TDM SUPPORT HIGH BANDWIDTH GUARANTEED QoS/SLA MAINTAIN EXISTING REVENUE SERVICES EXPAND CURRENT SERVICES 3

THE PACKET EDGE ARCHITECTURE The CDS provides modular, efficient service delivery and aggregation for business access services. The platform can be used to provide high-capacity services from a Central Office (CO), directly at customer premises (CPE), in outside-plant cabinets for business park and cell site applications or on multiple floors of multitenant office buildings. From a serving CO or CPE location, 1 Gigabit Ethernet, 10 Gigabit Ethernet, or OC-48 network interfaces allow connections into larger metropolitan networks. The CDS is ideally suited for deployments with both the 7500 ROADM and the 9500 Packet Optical Networking Platform (Packet ONP). Traditionally, service providers resorted to multiple overlay networks to meet all of the varying service requirements, resulting in costly, inefficient edge networks. With a competitive industry environment and increasing bandwidth requirements, the traditional approach simply isn t sustainable from a business or operational perspective. The CDS effectively supports the wide range of services and applications found in access networks. Its unique hardware and software architecture integrates Ethernet and SONET/SDH technology in a compact, cost-effective platform. 4

CRITICAL NETWORK APPLICATIONS Enterprise Ethernet Services The CDS is the ideal access and aggregation solution for delivering Ethernet business services. High-density Ethernet service interface cards allow large numbers of data customers to be supported in a single system. Integrated traffic management, data aggregation, and connection-oriented Ethernet transport technologies provide robust, carrier-grade data services with guaranteed Service Level Agreements (SLA). Legacy Services Demarcation Legacy SONET/EoS services remain the primary revenue producers for most service providers. Today, these services are usually terminated at customer sites by deploying a full SONET platform. With the CDS, a single service module provides both service delivery and service demarcation. The platform s small size, low power consumption and cost-to-value ratio all offer compelling benefits when compared to terminating these services on a traditional ADM. Wireless Backhaul The CDS eases migration from TDM to Ethernet transport for next-generation WiMAX and 4G LTE base stations. These systems require high-bandwidth, native Ethernet transport services the perfect application for the CDS optical edge platform. DELIVER TO SMALL AND LARGE ENTERPRISES OUTDOOR CABINET CUSTOMER PREMISES MULTITENANT UNIT EFFICENTLY DEMARC CURRENT SERVICES Low Power Consumption and a Small Footprint TRANSITION FOR WIRELESS BACKHAUL Next-Generation Transition The CDS provides an advanced Ethernet service and aggregation architecture for access networks. The incorporation of SONET/SDH, and Ethernet enables a smooth, seamless transition to a packet-centric architecture. AGGREGATION FOR ACCESS NETWORKS 5
