Case Study: MyCancerJourney Using Predictive Analytics to Empower Treatment Decisions
Case Study: MyCancerJourney, Using Predictive Analytics to Empower Treatment Decisions Overview Challenge Risk-adjusted outcomes are poorly defined in cancer care Clinical pathways associated with different treatments are complex and many patients are not able to complete planned treatments Information on treatments are siloed within providers and intuitions and difficult to access Complex combinations of patient co-morbidities, treatments and combinations of treatments; too many variables for the human mind to quantify Solution MyCancerJourney Web-based portal for newly diagnosed adult cancer patients at the time of diagnosis and throughout their entire survivorship experience Consists of three separate and unique programs: MyInsights, MyJournal, and MyCommunity: MyInsights: interactive predictive model that generates patient-specific survival curves MyJournal patients provide information, record journey from diagnosis through survivorship, and compare their experience with patients with similar cancers, demographic and prognostic factors MyCommunity: supportive, online social networking community for users to meet, share ideas, gain resources, and manage and cope with the issues related to cancer and its treatment. Benefits Type of patient-centric model of cancer care that health care reform demands and cancer patient groups advocate Empowers patients with unbiased treatment and outcomes information to support more informed decisions Contributors of outcomes data will have competitive advantage; will be among the few institutions with ability to define their risk-adjusted outcomes to payers, agencies, and quality reporting firms Data participants can secure competitive advantage by understanding trends and patterns in care Background Cancer is a very complex disease and, for most cancer types, there are several different treatment options. Depending on the age of the patient, overall severity of other medical conditions, morphologic spread and cell type of the tumor, different treatments are often associated with different survival and quality of life outcomes. Clinicians and patients are seeking relevant and accurate information regarding prognosis, treatment effectiveness, and quality of life. The current evidence base for cancer care is not designed to answer many of these questions. PotentiaMED s MyCancerJourney is a cloud-based outcomes and insights platform to capture, organize, analyze, and present patient-specific information to support value-based cancer care by incorporating the use of multiple centers outcomes registries, patient reported outcomes and predictive analytics. The Challenge In 2014, approximately 1.7 million Americans developed a new cancer and nearly 14.5 million Americans were living with a diagnosis of cancer; in 2024, it is expected that 19 million Americans will be living with a diagnosis of cancer. Clinicians, providers, life-sciences firms and payers are seeking relevant and accurate information regarding treatment outcomes, effectiveness, quality of life and prognosis. The current evidence base for cancer care is not designed to answer many of these questions. The evidence for cancer care comes from the results of randomized clinical trials derived from less than 4% of adult cancer patients. When compared to all cancer patients, clinical trial participants tend to be, younger, less racially diverse and have fewer comorbid ailments, like heart disease and diabetes. In addition, clinical trials 2016 PotentiaMetrics, Inc. and PotentiaMED. All rights reserved. Page 1
are not designed to provide prognostic information. Billions of dollars will be spent on cancer treatments and survivorship issues. Unfortunately, in many cases, these expenditures will not result in the expected outcomes. The market is demanding greater transparency and accountability with new value-based reimbursement models, intensified payer and regulatory reporting challenges. The Solution Patient-level outcomes data is the essential mechanism to make the leap from clinical efficacy to real-world effectiveness. PotentiaMED helped to convene otherwise competing providers to forge partnerships and developed an outcomes registry to enhance the evidence with real-world outcomes data. Working with a top-medical school, we obtained over 100,000 de-identified cancer patient records from multiple centers across the country. MyCancerJourney is a web-based portal to capture, organize, analyze, and present patient-specific information for newly diagnosed adult cancer patients at the time of diagnosis and for cancer patients throughout their entire survivorship experience. It consists of three separate and unique programs: MyInsights, MyJournal, and MyCommunity. 2016 PotentiaMetrics, Inc. and PotentiaMED. All rights reserved. Page 2
MyInsights is an interactive predictive model that generates patient-specific survival curves for newly-diagnosed adult cancer patients. MyJournal allows patients to provide basic demographic, clinical, tumor, treatment, functional well-being, and quality of life information; patients also record their journey from diagnosis through survivorship and can compare their experience with patients with similar cancers and demographic and prognostic factors. MyCommunity is a supportive, online social networking community for users to meet, share ideas, gain resources, and manage and cope with the issues related to cancer and its treatment. MyCancerJourney is designed to be the electronic hub of the cancer patient s experience and can support the type of patient-centric model of cancer care that health care reform demands and cancer patient groups advocate. Benefits Realized ROI Analysis Summary MyCancerJourney combines large real-world outcomes registries with the power of predictive analytics to create a paradigm shift in cancer care by empowering patients with unbiased treatment and outcomes information to support more informed decisions. It provides the patient-centric model of cancer care and ensures the support that health care reform demands and cancer patient groups advocate in important and previously unimagined ways. With risk-adjusted outcomes information, PotentiaMED is able to provide the contributors of outcomes data comparative analysis at an individual level, taking into account factors such as diagnosis, patient, treatment and stage. With this information, those contributors will be among the few institutions with the ability to define their risk-adjusted outcomes to payers, agencies, and quality reporting firms. When the information that is generated at the patient level is rolled up to the population level, it not only identifies how many patients are classified at the highest risk level, but also which hospitals and clinicians are treating these individuals. This information can then be used by the organization to determine trends and patterns in care. PotentiaMED s MyCancerJourney platform provides data participants with answers to questions such as: What are our outcomes compared to similar institutions? What does the market look like? In the market, who is winning and who is losing? How do we differ? Regionally? Nationally? What is our exposure? From a clinical perspective? From an economic perspective? What if we could change this? What is it worth? Ultimately, tailored treatment and survival information will impact understanding of disease to improve clinical and financial outcomes. 2016 PotentiaMetrics, Inc. and PotentiaMED.
