Code of Conduct at Lincoln-Martí Schools When a student learns to discipline himself, he/she tends to be a dependable, reliable, and a cooperative member of his/her class. Purpose The purposes of the code of conduct are: To promote responsible citizenship by encouraging appropriate participation in the civic life of the school community. To maintain an environment where conflict and difference can be addressed in a manner characterized by respect and civility. To encourage the use of non-violent means to resolve conflict. To promote the safety of people in the schools. To discourage the use of alcohol and illegal drugs. Roles and Responsibilities Principals take a leadership role in the daily operation of a school and provide leadership by: Demonstrating care and commitment to academic excellence and a safe teaching and learning environment; Holding everyone under their authority accountable for their behavior and actions; Communicating regularly and meaningfully with all members of their school community. Teachers and school staff, under the leadership of their principals, maintain order in the school and are expected to hold everyone to the highest standard of respectful and responsible behavior. As role models, staff uphold these high standards when they: Help students work to their full potential and develop their self-worth; Communicate regularly and meaningfully with parents; Maintain consistent standards of behavior for all students; Demonstrate respect for all students, staff and parents; Prepare students for the full responsibilities of citizenship. Students are to be treated with respect and dignity. In return, they must demonstrate respect for themselves, for others and for the responsibilities of citizenship through acceptable behavior. Respect and responsibility are demonstrated when a student: Comes to school prepared, on time and ready to learn; Shows respect for themselves, for others and for those in authority; Refrains from bringing anything to school that may compromise the safety of others; Follows the established rules and takes responsibility for his or her own action. 15

Parents or Guardians play an important role in the education of their children and have a responsibility to support the efforts of school staff in maintaining a safe and respectful learning environment for all students. Parents fulfill this responsibility when they: Show an active interest in their child s school work and progress; Communicate regularly with the school; Help their child be neat, appropriately dressed and prepared for school; Ensure that their child attends school regularly and on time; Promptly report to the school their child s absence or late arrival; Become familiar with the Code of Conduct and school rules; Encourage and assist their child in following the rules of behaviour; Assist school staff in dealing with disciplinary issues. Standards of Behavior They are as follows: Respect, Civility and Responsible Citizenship Respect and comply with all applicable federal, provincial and municipal laws; Demonstrate honesty, integrity and healthy lifestyle; Respect differences in people, their ideas and opinions; Treat one another with dignity and respect at all times, especially when there is a disagreement; Respect the dignity, rights and fair treatment of others, regardless of race, ancestry, place of origin, color, ethnic origin, citizenship, religion, gender, sexual orientation, age or disability; Demonstrate citizenship and acceptable strategies for resolving conflict; Respect the rights of others and the sacredness of human life; Show proper care and regard for school property and the property of others; Demonstrate honesty in achieving academic expectations; Respect persons who are in a position of authority; Demonstrate regular attendance; Respect the need of others to work in an environment of learning and teaching; Respect and honor the appropriate dress specified by the school community; Demonstrate appropriate and ethical use of technology; Respect guidelines regarding use of personal items (e.g., cell phones, pagers). 16

Physical Safety Weapons Not be in possession of any weapon, including but not limited to firearms; Not use any object to threaten or intimidate another person; Not cause injury to any person with an object. Alcohol and Drugs Not be in possession of, or under the influence of, or provide others with, alcohol, prohibited substances or illegal drugs. Physical Aggression Not inflict or encourage others to inflict bodily harm on another person; Seek staff assistance, if necessary, to resolve conflict peacefully. 17

Discipline Rules Violations Students who are found to have committed any of these violations will be disciplined. Smoking Having and/or using illegal mood modifiers, including alcohol and drugs. Using any substance which change the way you act, think, and feel. Bringing mood modifiers, including alcohol, to school to sell or give to other students. Threatening to hurt another person. Threatening a staff member. Physically hurting another student. Threatening to hit or hitting another student with a weapon. Hitting a staff member. Intentionally hitting a school staff member (battery or aggravated battery on a teacher or other school personnel). Threatening someone with a firearm, or concealing a firearm, knife, or other deadly weapon (assault). Physically hurting someone with a firearm, knife or other weapon (aggravated battery). Harassment. Sexual battery, taking money or property of another by using force or a weapon (armed robbery). Sex violation. Confining or holding another person against that person s will (kidnapping or abduction). Taking someone s life (homicide- murder, manslaughter). Starting a fire which causes damage (arson). Possession, use, or sale of any firearms or destructive devices. Possession, use, or sale of any explosive device. Possession of fireworks. Possession of chemicals compounds like tear gas and mace. Having and/or hiding a weapon. Damaging or destroying property. Vandalism (No graffiti, tagging). Lockers are school property. Rental of lockers are for the use of the school year. Writing, stickers, or anything that could cause damage to the lockers. Leaving the water faucets open (unnecessary). Stealing. Robbery. Joining in-school clubs or groups not approved by the School. Making someone give you money or things of value that do not belong to you by using force or threats. Gambling. Having or giving out indecent material. Refusal to obey teachers and administrators. Skipping schools/classes. Use of bad language such as curse words or threats. Eating in the classroom. Chewing gum, or candy. Using hallway pass without a pass. Long, dangly earrings may not be worn. Rings or studs in other body orifices such as, the nose, fingertips, eyebrows, lip Only one pair of earring may be worn. Make-up, including lipstick, cologne, hair spray, gel and perfume. Long nails, including artificial nails, loud nail polish. Tattoos. Dying hair with different colors. Beepers, wallets with chains, permanent markers, balloons, skateboards, radios, CD players, cassette players and recorders, laser pointers, video game cartridges and CD s, cellular phones, cameras, electronic pets, and other toys, stink bombs, shaving foam, pepper spray, mace, animals, cards of any type etc. are not permitted in school and will be confiscated. 18

Discipline Disciplinary Actions The penalty for fighting is expulsion for all parties involved. Teacher / student conference. Journal note- with student signature. Parent conference. Indoor suspension one period full day. After school detention 3:00p.m.-6:00p.m. Out school suspension 1-10 days. Loss of bus privileges. Probation. Warning for expulsion. Recommendation for expulsion. Expulsion notification. Referring criminal acts to the local police. Repaying or replacing any damage, if appropriate. Student s conduct will be reflected in the conduct grade. Possession of permanent markers will result in suspension. Students who have been on indoor or outdoor suspension may face exclusion from field trips and/or team activities. Confiscation of: beepers, wallets with chains, permanent markers, balloons, skateboards, radios, CD players, cassette players and recorders, laser pointers, video game cartridges and CD s, cellular phones, cameras, electronic pets, and other toys, stink bombs, shaving foam, pepper spray, mace, animals, cards of any type. These will be returned only to parents. 19

Discipline ZERO TOLERANCE for school related violent crime The State Board of Education, in Rule 6A-1.0404, has established a zero tolerance policy on school violence, crime, and the use of weapons as a part of a comprehensive approach to reducing school violence. It is an effort to provide an environment that is drug-free and protects students health, and safety, and civil rights, responsibility of students and the necessity of involving all stakeholders, including parents, in achieving this goal. This policy requires schools to involve the most severe consequences in dealing with students who engage in violent acts. The principal may withhold the transfer of student records for failure of a parent to reimburse the school for loss, destruction, or unnecessary damage to textbook, the student s records will reflect the parent s refusal to fulfill the obligation. Each teacher will have a Discipline Plan utilized in the classroom. With your help and support we will be able to continue to ensure a safe and orderly environment. Student services personnel such as counselors, visiting teachers and psychologist play a vital role in assisting the student in resolving any problems influencing his/her behavior in a negative manner. The Principal, teacher, or both, consistent with the powers delegated to them, have the authority to take additional administrative action if, in their opinion, the nature of the misconduct warrants it. 20
