What's How does the primary a CDN address issue a CDN it? addresses? A central point serving a vast audience Spread the load! Reaching critical ii mass Single point of failure Poor to the audience audience experience Get content closer 4

Put Content into the CDN Users requests content CDN gets content where needed CDN delivers content 2011 Level 3 Communications, LLC. All Rights Reserved. 5

Level3 versus other CDNs Differentiator Level 3 owns the Network Capacity on Demand Strategic Network Visibility Traffic Control Patented Intelligence Business Intelligence Why it Matters Level 3 is the most connected network in the world we control the routes and hand traffic off directly to last mile eyeball networks and don t need to rely on other transit providers and their routing policies Level 3 builds headroom well in advance of needs through capacity planning, including redundant connectivity, added in 10Gbps and 40 Gbps increments Level 3 s CDN nodes are strategically located in our gateways to position capacity closest to the points at which traffic is exchanged with eyeball networks or peers All Level 3 customer traffic is carried on our network which means we can directly manage performance Level 3 has patented intelligence built into our CDN platform to ensure content is served from optimal CDN nodes Intelligence optimizes distance, network congestion and server load which means Level 3 CDN traffic traverses fewer network hops than CDN s that do not own their own networks and buy transit from Level 3 ITM module, means that Level3 CDN can interoperate with other CDN Level 3 invested heavily in reporting to provide industry-leading Content Analytic tools that are extremely flexible 6

On Demand Streaming How it Works 1. On Demand streaming in the reverse- proxy mode. Low bandwidth Variable bandwidth 2. On Demand streaming in the forward- proxy po mode. 12

Origin Storage Platform Level 3 Origin Storage service specifically architected for optimization Content is 100% mirrored in multiple cities with each region for full redundancy Built on an industry-leading network Multiple redundant connections at every point of presence Low bandwidth Variable bandwidth 13

Live Streaming How it Works 1. Live streaming. Low bandwidth Variable bandwidth 14

Smooth Streaming How it Works Production Level3 customer Encoding Inlet Spinnaker Distribution Microsoft IIS and Level 3 Player Microsoft Silverlight Publication Servers Microsoft IIS CDN Delivery Low bandwidth Level 3 Network CDN Variable bandwidth Customer Broadcast facility High Bandwidth Event is produced in HD 1080i and delivered to the Inlet encoders. Broadcast feed is encoded in the Inlet Spinakers. Several quality profiles are encoded live from 350Kbps to 3Mbps and pushed to the Level3 Caching platform. The smooth streaming files are published on the IIS servers then pushed on the caching platform where they ll be delivered from our caching clusters through HTTP delivery. Silverlight player detects live the available bandwidth and CPU power and request the adequate profile. 15
