How to make an impact: 5 key questions to answer To implement Impact Investing solutions that will help you meet your financial objectives, we recommend starting with a thorough analysis of your investment objectives and strategy: Key Questions 1 What is the current footprint of my investment portfolios? Guidance Understand the environmental and social footprints of companies in your portfolio, in addition to their financial returns. Measure these outcomes relative to a benchmark. 2 What Impact Investing objectives should I set? Be intentional, intending to generate social and/or environmental impact through your investments. Seek measurability, enabling impact management and providing transparency so you can quantify and communicate the impact of your investments to beneficiaries and stakeholders. Seek expanded outcomes, increasing the magnitude or quality of your social and/or environmental outcomes over time. 3 Where do I want to make the most impact? You can choose to monitor and maximize your environmental and/ or social impact. This includes companies greenhouse gas emissions (GHG), energy consumption, water consumption and waste generation, as well as their gender equality and child labor practices. You can maximize your impact by investing in either companies that display corporate excellence or impact solutions providers, described in detail on the next page. 4 How can I meet my fiduciary obligations while adopting impactful solutions? Seek providers that offer flexible Impact Investing solutions that can be implemented within portfolio guidelines and liquidity constraints. A comprehensive database of qualitative and quantitative information about company management offers greater transparency, and an improved risk/return profile. 5 How can I maintain full transparency when implementing impact solutions? You ll achieve the greatest transparency by basing your Impact Investing strategies on robust research and by ensuring that you receive explicit and detailed reporting from your Impact Investing solutions provider. As pioneers in Sustainability Investing, we are committed to providing you with leading solutions, to expanding the reach and ease of Impact Investing, and we: Put you in control by immediately assessing your portfolio to produce a snapshot of your global environmental footprint. Our monitoring and impact solutions Our solutions encompass both listed equities and fixed income. In an effort to take Impact Investing from niche to mainstream, we have applied the concept to major asset classes including equities and fixed income. We provide two main services to our clients: Impact Monitoring, and Impact Investing solutions. Impact Monitoring In order to manage their portfolios impacts, investors must first be able to measure them. We have developed an analytical reporting tool to help investors monitor the impact of any portfolio on a selection of quantitative environmental indicators. We quickly give our clients an understanding of the magnitude of their portfolios environmental impact per invested dollar: 1) Evaluate footprint We screen a client s portfolio to determine each company s environmental footprint on four environmental indicators Greenhouse gas emissions (GHG) Energy consumption Water consumption Waste generation based on the company s total capital and the size of the portfolio s investment in the company. 2) Quantify impact The environmental footprint calculated for each company s exposure is aggregated to determine the portfolio s total environmental footprint. The total portfolio impact is determined by comparing its environmental footprint to that of the benchmark. 3) Attribution analysis Attribution analysis relative to the portfolio s selected benchmark shows whether impacts are driven by sector allocation or stock selection. This allows our clients to adjust their portfolios to achieve a customized Impact Investing strategy with measurable targets. Impact Investing solutions Approach Investment candidates Corporate excellence Companies that anticipate and manage current and future economic, environmental and social opportunities and risks by focusing on quality, innovation and productivity. Impact solutions providers Companies offering products and services that provide solutions to specific sustainability challenges with a positive environmental and societal impact are well positioned to benefit from secular growth trends. Strategies at a glance These solutions: Start with a standard corporate credit or equity portfolio. Focus on companies with lower normalized resource intensity per invested dollar or better social performance than their peers. Are based on a set of selected sustainability criteria, such as effects on climate change or gender diversity. Optimize financial returns with a low tracking error, and generate positive socioeconomic or environmental impact with controlled risk. The impact objectives of these portfolios are: Linked to resource efficiency. Address sustainability challenges in the areas of climate, energy, water, health, and food security. Focused strategies are based on a fundamental investment approach that considers both growth trends and sustainable industry drivers. These strategies are typically implemented as high-conviction public equity or private equity portfolios.
