la Caixa predoctoral contracts at UIB Obra Social La Caixa, with the firm willingness to contribute to the enhancement of the human potential existing in his area of activity, and fully aware of the great importance of the scientific progress, research, internationalization and the professional qualifications for the development and advance of society, objectives shared with the Universitat de les Illes Balears, opens a call for predoctoral contracts designed for students from countries of the European Union other than Spain, willing to achieve the doctorate degree at the Universitat de les Illes Balears. 1. Call 1.1. Two predoctoral contracts are announced to pursue a doctoral degree in one of the doctorate programs offered at the Universitat de les Illes Balears. 1.2. The beneficiaries of the contracts must initiate the studies in the doctorate program within natural year 2014. 1.3. The call opens the day of publication and the deadline for applications is March 30 2014. 1.4. The predoctorals contracts will have a one year duration and could be extended annually up to a maximum of 4 years, provided that the reports issued by the UIB Doctorate School are positive and conditioned to budgetary availabilities. 1.5. The total costs of hiring for each beneficiary are 20.000 (twenty thousand euros). These include salary, social security (healthcare) and termination indemnities. 1.6. The beneficiaries are exempt from paying academic tutoring fees. 2. Requirements for applicants 2.1 Be a citizen of a EU country other than Spain. 2.2 Not having been enrolled in doctorate programs before academic year 2013-2014. 2.3 Be enrolled in one of the doctorate programs or fulfill the access requirements for a doctoral program as established by current legislation, or being in the position to fulfill the requirements by September 30 2014. In the event of being selected and eventually not fulfilling them or not being able to prove with official documents by this date, the applicant will be automatically excluded. In general terms, the access to a doctorate program requires owing an official degree, or equivalent, and a masters degree. Also, for the purpose of this call and according to the current regulations, individuals can access a doctorate program in any of the following cases: a) To hold an official degree from a Spanish university, or from an institution of the European Higher Education Area, that enables the access to master s degree courses,
and have gained at least 300 credits (ECTS) including all official university courses, 60 of which must be at master level. b) To hold a degree gained in a foreign higher education system, without the need for an official recognition of the title, but with the previous validation by the UIB that this title certifies a training level which is equivalent to the Spanish official master degree and enables the holder to access doctorate programs at the issuer s country. 2.4. Preference is given to candidates applying for a doctorate program awarded a Mention Towards Excellence, according to rule EDU/3429/2010, of 28 December. The list of doctorate programs holding this award is included, as of the day this rules are published, in Resolution of 6 October 2011. See section 6.2. 2.5 The applicant will hold a current account or bankbook in any la Caixa office, in which the monthly stipends or any other benefits will be deposited. 3. Admission to the doctorate program The formalization of the contract to the selected applicants that are not enrolled in a doctoral program of the UIB at the deadline of this call will remain conditioned to gaining admission to the doctoral program of his or her choice. 4. Beginning of studies and incorporation The awarded applicants will begin their contracts within natural year 2014. 5. Application and documentation 5.1 Interested candidates must apply online on the applications web page available in the corresponding section of the UIB Doctorate School web portal. In this page, each form in the application clearly specifies the information requested to answer this call for predoctorals contracts and formalize the application. 5.2 The applicant must provide through the web applications form the following information: 5.2.1. Personal information. 5.2.2. Doctorate program in which the applicant wants to pursue the PhD degree. 5.2.3. Statement of academic and professional motives that encourage the applicant to apply for the doctoral contract. The writing must be personal and specific. 5.2.4. Academic, and professional when applicable, curriculum. 5.2.5. Nomination of doctorate director. According to the data provided, the UIB will contact the President of the doctoral committee (DAC), the tutor and the director and will notify them about the application. With the approval of the director, the CAD may approve the acceptance of the application and provide further information that may be required. Ultimately, it is the CAD the responsible body for assigning directors in the doctorate program. 5.2.6. A reference letter.
5.3. Additionally, applicants must attach to the application the following supporting documentation: 5.3.1. Copy of ID or passport. 5.3.2. Copy, within a single file, of the official academic transcript for undergraduate, graduate, master or equivalent degrees. These must specify the applicant s full name, the issuer university, the subjects and qualifications, as well as the total number of credits both for defining the entire degree and passed by the aplicant. In case the official academic record is issued in a language other than English, French, Italian, Portuguese, Spanish or Catalan, a translation to Catalan, Spanish or English must be attached. The applicant can make this translation. 5.4. All required documents must be submitted in PDF format and be incorporated into the application from the same application on- line. No documents sent by post or by email will be accepted. 5.5. If the EDUIB already has some of the applicant s documents listed in points 5.2 and 5.3, for having gained access to UIB doctorate programs in academic year 2013-2014, the corresponding web to formalize the applications will require only the remaining documents. 5.6. The EDUIB reserves the right to inquiry the candidates for any supplementary information it considers appropriate. 6. Selection process 6.1 The procés is split in two parts: a) Eligibility test: The EDUIB examines all applications received and automatically rejects those that do not meet the published criteria in the rules of this call. b) Selection in a committee: each eligible application will be assessed by a committee consisting of the Rector of the University of the Illes Balears or a delegate Vice- Rector, acting as President, the Director and Secretary of the Doctorate School of the UIB, the Director of the Centre for Postgraduate Studies and a representative of the "la Caixa". 6.2 The contracts will be awarded on a competitive basis selection process. The members of the committee select those candidates that, according to their criteria, prove higher merits and higher capacities, taking into consideration the following factors: a) Academic record of the applicant (up to 60 points). b) The academic and/or professional currículum, in relation to the stage where the applicant is in the context of his/her career and the opportunities in this respect, he/she may have had (up to 15 points). c) The reference letter to support the application, taking into account the specific content linked to the applicant s project, as well as the profile of the person signing it (up to 10 points). d) Pre- registration in a UIB doctoral program awarded with the Mention towards Excellence EDU/3429/2010 provided in the Order of 28 December. The list of
awarded doctorate programs is contained on the date of publication of these rules in the Resolution of 6 October 2011 (15 points). 6.3 This call for predoctoral contracts may be declared void for any or all of the contracts, if the selection committee proposes it. 7. Nomination of candidates 7.1 The selection committee will agree upon and decide on a sorted list of candidates, as well as a list of reserves. This list will be published with full names, on the website of the Doctoral School of the UIB, no later than 16 April 2014. 7.2 Prior to the formal signature of the contract, the candidate must gain admission to the doctoral program that was linked to the application. If admission has not happened on September 30 2014, or the selected applicant resigns, the contract will be automatically offered to the next candidate. 8. Beginning and duration of the contracts 8.1 Beneficiaries of this call may sign the contract student after they formally enroll in the doctoral program. Beneficiaries enrolled in a doctoral program in the 2013-2014 academic year may sign the contract after the publication of the resolution. 8.2 The contract will last for one year, although it may be renewed annually for a maximum of four years, subject to funding availability. At the end of each year, the student must certify, before the EDUIB and with the requested documents, the progress made during the preceding period. 8.3 The UIB will not renew the predoctoral contract in the following cases: a) If the reports that the EDUIB will request annually to the thesis director are not positive. b) If, at the end of the first two years, the report the EDUIB will request to the academic commission of the doctoral program is not positive. 9. Incompatibilities 9.1 Those who have enrolled in doctoral studies before academic year 2013-2014 and paid the fees are not elegible and so cannot answer this call. 9.2 These contracts are awarded to follow full- time in- person doctorate studies (e.g. to train and do research at the UIB premises). 9.3 These contracts are incompatible with any gainful employment, scholarship or financial aid from another organism. 9.4 In the event that the university offers the PhD student the possibility of teaching classes, in general and without prejudice of any particular case, teaching above 60 hours a year will not be allowed.
9.5 Those that have previously won another scholarship from the Fundació "Obra Social la Caixa" cannot be selected and so cannot answer this call. 10. Contract management and obligations of the beneficiary 10.1 The management and administration of the contracts corresponds to the University of the Illes Balears. In particular, the corresponding UIB effective administration of the amounts allocated annually by Fundació "Obra Social la Caixa" to cover the expenses of the contracts. 10.2 The awarded applicant agrees to complete the doctoral studies planned in accordance with the application submitted. 10.3 If any publication derived from the PhD studies, the author must explicitly acknowledge the financial support of the Fundació "Obra Social la Caixa". 10.4 As requested by the EDUIB, the selected candidate must prove with original documents or authenticated copies, the files attached to the application. Also, the EDUIB may request proof of any information mentioned in the curriculum. 10.5 In case the doctorate student does not fulfill the contract obligations referred to above or any other conditions included in this announcement, the University of the Illes Balears reserves the right to proceed as deemed appropriate, and even terminate the contract signed. 10.6 The selected candidate must agree in writing, using the template provided by the EDUIB, the terms and conditions of this call as well as the criteria established by the UIB, within fifteen days from the notification date of the award, which will be sent to the email address indicated in the application. 11. Privacy and data protection privacy 11.1 The UIB complies fully with current legislation regarding the protection of personal data and keeps, especially, the commitment on the confidentiality regarding any information provided. 11.2 The UIB has adopted the necessary measures to maintain the level of security required, depending on the nature of the personal data and the circumstances of the treatment in order to avoid, insofar as possible and according to the available technology, the alteration, loss, treatment or the unauthorized access to the data. 11.3 Personal data of the applicants for a predoctoral contract that are included in the documents referred to herein will be incorporated into the corresponding official file of the Doctoral School of the UIB. This data will be used only for purposes related to the call, such as the awarding and managing of the PhD contracts. 12. Concluding provisions 12.1 The act of applying for these predoctoral contracts implies, both express acceptance of the criteria and decisions made by the University of the Illes Balears about the requirements, and the rules set out in this call.
12.2 The detection of a breach of these rules by the applicant, regardless of when this occurs and regardless of the state in which the application is in the pre- selection, selection or award of contracts, means the automatic cancellation of the application or the termination of the contract, if already awarded. 13. Resolution This call will be resolved through resolution of the Rector of the University of the Illes Balears, which will be published on the website of the Doctoral School no later than 16 April 2014. Awarded candidates will receive a personal notification to the email address they included in the application.
