Section 1 Inspiration 7.0 What is Inspiration? Inspiration is an organizing tool for brainstorming sessions and discussions. Inspiration can be used to create concept maps, idea maps, webs, storyboards and flow charts. It can also switch between diagram and outline modes. This allows for different ways to view and organize information. Who should use Inspiration? Inspiration may be used by administrators, teachers, and students in a variety of situations. Administrators use it to create concept maps for planning Teachers use it to organize ideas from a classroom discussion Students - use it to brainstorm and organize information for a report or a presentation. 1
Section 2 Creating a Diagram Tools Diagram Toolbar - tools for creating symbols, links and notes Draw Toolbar tools for drawing shapes and text boxes. Also contains the color palette. Symbol Palette a library of shapes for use as symbols in the diagram. To Add Symbols There are many ways to add a symbol. You can manipulate symbols after they have been created. For most of the options shown below, if you choose an existing symbol first, the new symbol is automatically connected to it as a child. Option 1.) click the create button on the diagram toolbar. This creates a new symbol with the link going in the direction specified by the arrows on the create buttons. 2
Option 2.) select the rapidfire option on the diagram toolbar. In this mode enter the text for each child idea (press return after entering each one). Inspiration will automatically create each symbol with the original symbol being the parent. Option 4.) drag and drop from the symbol palette. When you use this option the symbol you dragged will not automatically be connected to existing symbols. Entering Text Click on the symbol you wish to enter text for. Begin typing to enter your text. You can then manipulate this text in the same way you would with a word processor. 3
Section 3 Manipulating Symbols Click on a symbol to select it. The diamond shaped handles you see are connection points to other symbols. The square handles are used to resize the symbol. To select multiple symbols hold down the shift key while selecting the symbols To select all objects go to the Edit menu and select select all To move a symbol click and drag the symbol to its new location To resize a symbol click the symbol to select it, and then click the bottom right corner handle and drag. Hold down the ctrl key for proportional scaling. To delete a symbol click on the symbol you wish to delete and press the delete key on your keyboard. To change a symbol click on the existing symbol to select it then click a new symbol on the symbol palette. To add notes to a symbol select the symbol then press the add note button on the diagram tool bar. Notes are only fully displayed in outline view. 4
Section 4 Links To add a new link - click the link button on the diagram toolbar. The pointer will change to a two way arrow. Click on the primary idea first. Then the second idea symbol. A one way link is created from the first symbol to the second. To select a link click it To Select multiple links hold down the shift key while selecting additional links. To change a connection point click one of the red control handles. Drag it to a different symbol connection point. To add text to a link click the link and type in the text 5

Inspiration provides a command to organize the diagram into different types of charts. You can select top down, bottom up, and cluster. You can also select the stacking arrangement of the chart. 8
Section 6 Creating an Outline Switching to an outline view Click on the Outline button in the diagram toolbar to switch to outline view. To revert to diagram view click the diagram button on the outline bar. Outline tools Topic - adds a new topic to the outline at the selected level Subtopic - creates a sub topic below the selected level Note allows the user to add notes to the selected entry Left/right changes the level of the selected item Hyperlink used to create a hyperlink to the internet Spell runs spell check 9
