U.S. ARMY ACTIVE DUTY JAG CORPS ACTIVE DUTY APPLICATION PROCEDURES Deadlines: FALL: NOVEMBER 1 st Technical Notice: The Online Application is only compatible with PC-based operating systems and Internet Explorer browsers. Our application does not function properly with other browsers or operating systems. Instructions: Please review the following as you complete the online application. Note: Do not mail any documents to our office. The entire application is exclusively online. We will only consider documents that are scanned as PDF files and uploaded to the online application. Failure to follow instructions could result in your application not being considered by the Selection Board. We will not consider incomplete or late applications, including those from candidates who do not obtain a Field Screening Officer interview. Here you will find another copy of this document. Part B: Personal Information 1-4. Self Explanatory 5. Date of Birth: Be sure to enter the date in the specific format as requested: MM/DD/YYYY. 6. Self Explanatory 7. Height: INCHES only (do not enter feet, centimeters, or other measurements) 8. Weight: LBS only 9-10. Self Explanatory 11-12. Citizenship: If you are a citizen, it is either by birth or naturalization, but not both. 15. Indicate if you previously applied. Previous application materials will NOT be provided to the board. 16. Indicate if you are interested in having your information release to the Reserves or National Guard. If you are selected as a primary or alternate, you may be pre-qualified for the Reserves.

Part C: Contact Information 17. Current Address: where you are currently living and can be readily reached. 18. Permanent Address: if different than where you currently live 19. Alternate Address: another way of contacting you if the first two addresses are invalid 20-25. Self Explanatory Part D: Educational Information 26. Undergraduate Information. Please list all undergraduate institutions you attended and earned credit hours. If your undergraduate institution is not listed, please enter it in the available block. Transcript: After entering and saving the information, please upload a PDF scanned copy of an original transcript (include both front and back copies). Load the file as ONE DOCUMENT. If you had more than one undergrad institution, load all transcripts for any course work that exceeds 12 credit hours. Transcripts must include your name, the school s name, the degree conferred, and the date that degree was conferred. In order to comply with this requirement, you should order an official transcript from all institutions you attended, break the seal on the envelopes, open the transcripts and scan all the pages both front and back - as a separate PDF document for each transcript. You should then upload the document to the documents section of your online application. If possible, the transcript should also show your general class standing. If your class rank is unavailable or your class was not ranked, you should scan a statement from your school explaining this as a PDF file and upload it to the documents section of your application. Again, PDF scans of official transcripts are required; Internet grade reports are not acceptable. 27. Graduate School Information: Follow the same procedures as Undergraduate Information. 28. Law School Information: Follow the same procedures as Undergraduate Information. Be sure to include your class rank. If your institution does no rank, include a statement with your transcript indicating this. If the law school transcript indicates the non-ranking policy, there is no need to include the additional statement. 29. Extra-Curricular Information. As indicated, list your activities in this section. If you are still participating in the organization, please indicate a thru date of when you anticipate it ending, i.e. graduation date, etc. 30. LSAT score. Your application will not be considered by the selection board unless a Law School Admission Test (LSAT) score is included. If your law school waived the LSAT requirement, scan a complete explanation from your law school as a PDF document and upload it to the documents section of your application.

31-32. Self Explanatory 33-34. These questions apply to undergraduate, graduate, and/or law school attendance. Please be descriptive and succinct. Failure to disclose information could result in your application being removed from consideration. Part E: License & Experience Resume: When you complete this section, load your resume as a PDF file. 35. If you not yet admitted, answer and proceed to question 55 (should be 36). 55. This should be 36 (technical error). Provide the date and state you anticipate taking. If you later change your state, this will not affect your application. However, if you change the date (July versus February bar exam), please contact us. 37-40. Self Explanatory. Failure to disclose information could result in your application being removed from consideration. Bar Standing Information: If you are currently a member of a bar, you must submit a Certificate or letter from the clerk of the highest court of a state or of a federal court showing admission to practice and standing before the bar. The certification or letter must be dated within three (3) months of the date of your application. You should scan all pages of the certificate of good standing as a PDF document and upload the document. Part F: Military Summer Intern Program Information 41. If you participated in a U.S. Army JAG Summer Internship, indicate here. If you participated in the 2L internship, provide your information in (a) and (b). 42. If you participated in another Department of Defense internship, including another service s military summer internship or an Army JAGC externship provide the information here. 43-51. ROTC Program Information. If you have ANY experience in the ROTC program, regardless of how brief it was, you must indicate it here. This includes Scholarship ROTC, ROTC-Ed Delay, and non-scholarship ROTC. 52. Service Chronology. Click on Add Service. If you have ANY experience as a military service member, regardless of how brief it was, you must indicate it here. If you are ROTC, you should indicate your military service here. If your thru date of service is ongoing, enter the estimated date in which your Service Obligation will be complete. 53-62. Self Explanatory Military Records: If you have prior military service, you must submit a DD Form 214, Certificate of Release of Discharge from Active Duty. Applicants with prior military service must also submit copies of all Officer and Enlisted Evaluation Reports. Please load all

documents as ONE file. Service members currently on Active Duty or Active Reserves/National Guard should submit all evaluations, if applicable. A DD 214 is not necessary. Service members currently serving should be aware that if an offer is made, you will be required to submit a request to be released from your current branch/service. The JARO office will discuss with you during the accession phase. Part G: Field Screening Officer s Interview 63-65. An Active Duty interview with a Field Screening Officer must be obtained within 12 months of the application deadline. Select Active Duty JAG Corps Officers have been designated as Field Screening Officers (FSOs) for this purpose. PLEASE NOTE: Internship interviews are not sufficient for active duty applications. Applicants who have an interview that is more than 12 months old must obtain another interview in order for their application to be considered. HOW TO COORDINATE AN INTERVIEW: During the fall of each year, FSOs from the Army JAG Corps visit most ABA-accredited law schools to conduct interviews with prospective applicants. Your law school career services office will tell you the date and time that the FSO will visit your school. Additionally, you can visit the Judge Advocate Recruiting Office website at www.jagcnet.army.mil/jaro and go to Find a Field Screening Officers to identify the Field Screening Officer assigned to your school. FSO listings are sorted by law school for your convenience For those applicants who are no longer in law school or who are unable to meet with an FSO on their date scheduled for their interviews, applicants may also contact an FSO and travel to his/her location for the interview. Applicants will not be reimbursed for any travel or incidental expenses connected with the interview. Applicants may submit their applications prior to their field-screening interview. The applicant should list the date and place of the interview and the name of the FSO in Part J of the application. Please note that last minute requests for interviews will not be honored, as travel for the Field Screening Officer needs to be arranged in advance. Therefore, you should plan accordingly and schedule your interview as soon as possible. Part H: Personal Statement 66. You must submit a statement regarding your interests, objectives, and motivations for applying for an Active Duty commission with the Army JAG Corps. Your statement should not exceed 4000 characters (not 4000 words). Anything in excess of 4000 characters will not be considered. Part I: Letters of Recommendation Letters of Recommendation may be submitted as a part of your application, but are not required. Should you choose to include these documents as a part of your application packet, they should be based on a personal acquaintance with unbiased judges, lawyers, law school professors, military officers, or others, and should address your reputation, abilities and professional standing.

Letters should be addressed as Dear President and Selection Board Members. You may use the JARO office as the address for the letterhead The Judge Advocate Recruiting Office, 9275 Gunston Road, Suite 3228, Fort Belvoir, Virginia 22060. However do not mail the document. These letters should be scanned as an Adobe Acrobat PDF file and attached to your online application. Please do not include more than four (4) letters of recommendation. Provide the name of the recommender, email, and phone number for all recommenders, even if the writer will be submitting the document separately (as indicated below). This will help the JARO office locate the document and attach it to your application. If the writer desires confidentiality, signed and scanned letters may be e-mailed by the writer. Instructions on how to submit are as follows: E-mail Address for Third-Party Letters of Recommendation Submissions: CPT Annemarie Vazquez at: annemarie.p.vazquez.mil@mail.mil 1. Digitally scan the signed letter of recommendation as an Adobe Acrobat PDF file 2. Attach to an email 3. In subject line, put the applicant s LAST NAME, FIRST NAME. 4. Provide the writer s point of contact information in the body of the email in the event we need to contact the sender. Part J: Additional Information 67. Provide the date you will be ready for service. You must be a licensed attorney in order to start active duty service. 68-71. Provide any additional information that cannot be found elsewhere in your application or resume. 72-73. These questions apply to every applicant. Please be descriptive and succinct. Failure to disclose information could result in your application being removed from consideration. Part K: Upload Photograph This must be a PROFESSIONAL PHOTOGRAPH. Unacceptable photographs will result in your application not be considered by the selection board. Current members of the military should submit an official DoD photograph. Non-branched ROTC students on educational delay should submit an official DA photo or a photograph in their uniform do NOT wear the JAG Corps branch insignia or regimental crest on your uniform. However, Ed-Delay are authorized to wear the navy-colored shoulder boards with rank. All pictures should be saved as JPEG files. You must submit a photograph of yourself in professional attire. This photograph should be clear and show your head and shoulders.

Part L: Upload Documents All documents should have already been submitted in the relevant section of the application. This section is simply a listing of all documents you included. Do not include a document unless it is explicitly requested in the application. Any extra documents will be deleted before being submitted to the selection board. WRITING SAMPLE (optional): A writing sample, 10 pages in length or less, may be submitted, but is not required. Do not exceed the 10 page limit. As with all other documents, you should scan this document as a PDF file and then upload it as an attachment in the document section of your online application. Please do not submit Microsoft Word documents that can be edited when opened. Part M: Survey This information is crucial for future marketing purposes. The information contained in this section is not viewed by the selection board. SUBMIT YOUR APPLICATION Once you have reviewed the application for accuracy and completeness, you submit your application by clicking the submit button. Your application will then be sent to the JARO office for review. If your application was successfully submitted, the status of your application can be viewed when you login to the Online Application Website. Print Function: The print function will provide you an HTML copy of your application. This function is for your records only. The selection board views all applications electronically. We recognize that some answers are cut-off in the print view; this will not be the case with the electronic version viewed by the board. Under Completeness Review: This status means that your application has been received by the JARO office and is under review by our staff. If corrections are required, you will receive an email. Your application may remain at this status even after the application deadline has passed, as it takes time to review each application. Pending Board Review: This status means that your application has been reviewed and is now pending vote by the Selection Board. This status will remain after the Selection Board has reviewed your application, so please check www.jagcnet.army.mil/jaro for any postings in December of 2015 regarding selection.
