Questions and Answers about Financial Aid for Postgraduate Study At Nazarene Theological College Q: If I am accepted as a postgraduate student at the College, is there any financial assistance available? A: Yes. The financial aid that is available is broadly of two types: government awards, and college and denominational awards. Each award has specific criteria attached to it. See the range of government funding and other external sources on the following web-sites: www.dfes.co.uk/studentsupport and www.britishcouncil.org Q: I am resident of the UK and I wish to register as a full-time research student at the College. What support might I receive from public funds? A: Your first place of enquiry should be to the Arts and Humanities Research Council. The AHRC makes awards that cover full tuition fees plus a generous maintenance allowance. These are competitive awards with strict application deadlines. Check the following web-site for details of awards and application forms: www.ahrc.ac.uk Q: I am an EU citizen but not resident in Britain. As a full-time research student at the College, am I eligible for an award from the Arts and Humanities Research Council? A: Yes. The AHRC makes awards that cover full tuition fees to EU citizens. These are competitive awards with strict application deadlines. Check the following web-site for details of awards and application forms: www.ahrc.ac.uk Q: I am not eligible for an AHRC award because I am not an EU citizen. Are there other awards for which I might apply? A: You should check for awards that might be available in your own country. North American students, for instance, are eligible for student loans. Application forms can be obtained from the appropriate Higher Education funding agency in your home state/province. Check the British Council website for addresses and other information: www.britishcouncil.org Q: What other awards are available? A: A number of awards are made through the College. See the information on the page titled Postgraduate Bursaries, Fellowships & Scholarships for the range of support available. Q: What is a community service bursary? A: Some full-time scholarships and bursaries are community service awards, entailing limited responsibilities in a range of roles. Students may choose to receive a lesser amount and thereby not assume the duties carried by the award but these duties will be designed to give the student valuable experience for her or his CV. To qualify for a Community Service Bursary, students will be

required to offer their services for the benefit of the College community in a range of roles. A 20% bursary equates to 7 hours of volunteer time per week; a 40% bursary to 14 hours per week, a 50% bursary will be the maximum award made and will equate to 17.5 hours of volunteer time per week. Community Service Bursaries will include but not be limited to library support; exam invigilation; teaching assistant roles; administrative/clerical tasks. Q: How do I apply for assistance? A: Download the Application for Financial Aid from the web-site, complete it and send it to The Registrar along with your application form. Q: How will you handle my application? A: Your Application for Admission to the course will be sent to the MA Admissions Committee or the Research Degrees Committee for consideration. Once your application has been accepted, your Application for Financial Aid will be considered by the Postgraduate Awards Committee. Their decision will normally be part of the official Offer of a Place that you will receive from the College. Q: Do I qualify for one of the named scholarships? A: These scholarships have criteria attached to them. The Hynd Scholarship is restricted to Nazarene applicants from Africa, the Souter Fellowship and Don and Bonnie Irons Fellowship are restricted to Nazarene research degree candidates from outside the EU and the Rae Fellowship restricted to Nazarene applicants from outside the EU. Q: Will everyone who qualifies for one of the named scholarships receive an award? A: Unfortunately, the resources in these funds are limited. Thus, the Postgraduate Awards Committee will have to adjudicate between applicants and determine the level of award on the basis of the amount of money in the fund. Q: I m an international student, but I m not a member of the Church of the Nazarene. Are there bursaries or scholarships for which I can apply? A: You ll see that as well as a scholarship for academic excellence, there is a needs-based bursary for students whose country of origin is outside the EU. Q: I am a member of the Church of the Nazarene, applying for the MA degree. Which named scholarship might be available? A: The Rae Fellowship, but only if you are not from the UK. And the Hynd Scholarship, but only if you are from Africa. Q: How should I apply for support from the Eurasia Regional Scholarship Fund? A: If you are a member of the church of the Nazarene, involved in ministry in the Eurasia Region, please contact the Eurasia Regional Office for the appropriate forms. Complete these forms and send them, along with the Application for Admission and the Application for Financial Aid, to the Registrar, who will forward them to the Eurasia Regional Office. Nazarene Students from other world areas should contact their Regional Education Coordinator for information on funding options from their region. Q: I note that several of these awards stipulate on demonstration of financial need. How do I demonstrate that? A: The Application for Financial Aid needs to be completed in full. Please answer all the questions on the form, and attach the completed Needs Assessment Form. The Postgraduate Awards Committee will make its decisions on the basis of these completed forms. US students should, where possible, attach a copy of their SAR. Q: I am applying for part-time study. Do I qualify for any awards?

A: Yes. Except where otherwise stipulated, you can apply for financial aid. Follow the same process as fulltime applicants. Q: I did not submit my Application for Financial Aid with my Application for Admission. Am I too late to be granted an award? A: No. Your application will be considered at the next meeting of the Postgraduate Awards Committee. Any award made will apply from that date forward. Awards cannot be made retrospectively. Q: I am not an EU citizen. Can I supplement my resources by parttime work? A: Not at present. Immigration regulations have changed, so you are no longer allowed to take part time work. Q: I am not an EU citizen. What about health care while I am a student? And my family? A: If you are a student registered at the College and are going to stay in the UK for more than six months you will qualify for NHS treatment from the beginning of your stay and you will be entitled to NHS treatment and you may register with a GP. Regulatory changes mean that it is not likely that you will be able to bring your family with you. Q: Does the College have any openings for teaching assistants or similar roles? A: There may be some opportunity to gain experience and earn some money as well. These sorts of appointments would normally be available for research degree candidates who have already completed their probationary period.
