1 P a g e BUSINESS DEGREE STUDENT INTERNSHIP GUIDELINES BUSN 4715: Internship (1 through 9 Credits) Student interns may register for 1 to 9 credits. Each credit is equivalent to 40 hours. Introduction: The internship program for the Division of Business, Management, and Technology- BUSN 4715: Internship in Business - is offered to student interns pursuing a major or minor in Business. This program is designed to provide student interns the opportunity for a meaningful career-related experience in a corporation, government, and/or a non-profit organization. Student interns are expected to practice and expand upon their knowledge and skills learned in the classroom in a hands-on work environment. This experience should provide a better understanding of the business surroundings while facilitating the transition from the classroom to the career environment. Student interns can register for BUSN 4715: Internship course once they have completed the following: 1. Successfully completed BUSN 2570 2. Received approval from the business internship advisor and faculty mentor. 3. Are in good academic standing with a GPA of 2.0 or higher. 4. Completed at least 60 credit hours for a baccalaureate or 30 credit hours for an associate degree. Student Internship Criteria: 1. Student interns may complete their internship during the fall, spring, or summer semesters. 2. Student interns have one year to complete their internship. After one year, the grade will turn into an F. 3. All student interns who obtain internships (even those that are not for credit) must report the internship to the business internship advisor prior to their start date. 4. Complete an internship agreement form. (Appendix A- pg. 5) 5. The student intern must register for BUSN 4715 prior to starting the internship.

2 P a g e ASSIGNMENTS FOR ACADEMIC CREDIT FOR BUSN4715: INTERNSHIP IN BUSINESS Assignment 1 Develop and Complete an Employer and Student Internship Project Work Sheet (Appendix C) In collaboration with the employer and business internship advisor, the student intern will develop one (1) project/goal per course credit. For instance, if the student intern registers for a three (3) credit internship, he or she will work with the employer and business internship advisor to develop three projects/goals. The projects/goals will be developed based on the location of the internship and specific to the employer needs as well as the student intern s abilities. Assignment two (2) must be developed within the first week of the student intern s start date. The student will complete Appendix C and submit through Moodle to the business internship advisor and faculty mentor for final approval. Examples of projects: 1. The student intern will develop and implement an inventory spreadsheet. 2. The student intern will create a database for new customers. 3. The student intern will develop marketing materials for various promotional events. 4. The student intern will conduct research for a specific product. Assignment 2 Weekly Timesheets (Appendix B) Internship timesheets must be submitted to the business internship advisor WEEKLY by e-mail (as a Word attachment), by fax, Moodle, or in person. Remember that completed timesheets ARE a part of the student s final grade! Please make sure to complete these timesheets at the end of each work week. Time sheets must be signed by both the student intern and the employer on a weekly basis. Assignment 3 - Journal (Appendix B) (Note: This is the same sheet as the weekly timesheets) The student intern will document his/her weekly learning experiences at the internship site, into a maximum of a one-page paper. The journal should include, but not limited to; the daily activities, tasks, assignments, projects, duties, etc. The journal is due weekly and should be submitted with the timesheets by Sunday evening to the Business Internship Advisor by e-mail (as a Word attachment), by fax, Moodle, or in person. If the task is repeated weekly the student may include their tasks onto the weekly timesheets in place of the journal.

3 P a g e Assignment 4 - Final Internship Paper The Final Report must be submitted within one week following the completion of the internship experience. The report should include a summary of the required project(s) that the student completed during the internship (Appendix C). The final paper should be submitted in a binder for better organization. There is no minimum page amount for the report; however, the paper should include the following: I. Cover Page Student intern name and title of position (e.g. student intern) Name of company/organization Name of Business Internship Advisor Address and telephone number of company/organization II. Section One The student will describe the internship experience and the role at the business. Information should include, but not limited to, the following: A. Description of the company/organization Brief history of company Purpose/mission of the company/organization Approximate number of people working and number of departments Brief description of customers/clients/people served How the work is divided - departments, sections, etc Specific brief description of department in which you worked Organizational chart Marketing materials (flyers, brochures, etc) Photos of group projects, accomplishments, etc. III. Section Two A. Description of the projects assigned Describe the process taken to complete project(s)/goal(s). Describe the job/role performed during the internship (including work accomplished). Describe in detail the purpose of the project and how it was incorporated into the workplace. Analyze the strengths and weaknesses discovered in carrying out the work.

4 P a g e Discuss what was learned from fellow worker, both personally and professionally. Discuss, compare, and contrast perceptions and expectations at the beginning and end of the internship. Analyze skills, ideas, and knowledge learned from the placement; indicate which are needed most in this field and why. Discuss how the skills learned and this internship may influence your academic decisions and career focus/choices for the near future. IV. Self-Reflection Questions A. The last part of this paper will require the student intern to answer the following selfreflection questions: How would you describe your learning experience at the internship site? What skills did you bring to the internship site? What skills did you feel you lacked to complete your internship more effectively? (i.e. technology, accounting, organizational, etc.) How do you think the internship will help prepare you to reach your future career goals? What skills did you take away from the internship? The above comments and questions are just a starting point for the student intern to reflect upon during their internship. Students should add additional information they feel is important to share with their faculty mentor and business internship advisor.

1 P a g e Guidelines 1. Internships will be one-semester credit hour (minimum) or up to nine-semester credit hours (maximum). 2. The business internship advisor will enter the grade upon completion of all internship requirements. 3. The intent of the internship program is to allow student interns to devote time to gain practical work experience. Student interns are permitted to take additional courses while completing an internship; however, course loads should be kept within reason. 4. Student interns completing their internship at their current place of employment must incorporate new learning experiences at the workplace and complete BUSN 2570 prior to starting their internship. 5. Student interns are required to complete a minimum of 40 hours of work for one-semester hour of academic credit or up to 360 hours of work for nine-semester credit hours in an approved internship site. 6. A grade is contingent upon "satisfactory" evaluations by the employer and faculty mentor and completed assignments. 7. The intern must pay regular tuition and fees for credit hours, unless completing the internship during summer which may provide a discounted rate. 8. The intern must also register for the internship for the academic term during which the work is being performed. Internship credit will not be granted retroactively; student interns must have internships approved in advance. 9. All student interns must have a faculty mentor and a separate employer supervisor. Interns should contact their faculty mentor and business internship advisor on a regular basis during the internship. 10. The faculty business internship advisor will visit each field placement to meet with the intern and the employer supervisor at least once during the internship period. Dependent upon the location of the internship, the visit may be conducted via telephone conference or other electronic means. 11. The intern is subject to the jurisdiction of all rules, regulations, and codes of conduct impacting student interns at Keystone College and the handbook, as well as those that the employer may require. 12. Student interns must maintain confidentiality and professionalism with regard to sensitive information gained in the work environment.

2 P a g e RESPONSIBILITIES OF THE COLLEGE (Faculty Mentor and Internship Coordinator) 1. Provide the student intern with a pre-internship orientation, BUSN 2570. 2. Provide the participating employer/business with appropriate instruments for evaluating the student intern and certificate of insurance. 3. Mentor students during their internship. 4. Assist the student intern in developing work projects provided by the employer/business and the internship experience, when necessary. 5. Conduct an exit interview with student intern and employer. RESPONSIBILITIES OF THE PARTICIPATING EMPLOYER/BUSINESS Assign a supervisor/mentor to work directly with the student intern to achieve the educational goals of the internship by assigning appropriate work duties. Complete the employee project worksheet (Appendix C) within the first week of employment. Sign off on weekly timesheets (Appendix B). Provide an internship job description. Provide the student intern with an orientation to the work-site duties, hours, and employer/business expectations. Schedule regular meetings with the student intern and provide an appropriate evaluation of the student intern's performance. Provide a safe and secure workplace where the student intern has the opportunity to meet his/her educational objectives. Complete the student evaluation. This agreement is subject to any specified educational objectives, duties, learning outcomes, and evaluation methods on the accompanying page(s). Any party with two weeks notice may terminate the agreement. The College or the Employer/Business has the right to terminate a student intern's experience if either party feels the student intern is not performing satisfactorily.
