o CATHOLIC EDUCATION OFFICE SYDNEY RESEARCH AND DEVELOPMENT PROJECT 2013 2014 arrowsmith program

o WHAT IS THE RESEARCH AND DEVELOPMENT PROJECT? The Catholic Education Office (CEO) Sydney is an authorised site for the provision of the Arrowsmith Program to students in Sydney systemic Catholic schools. In 2013 2014, the CEO Sydney will carry out a Research and Development Project which will provide the Arrowsmith Program to a limited number of currently enrolled students who meet the criteria of identified learning difficulties. The Arrowsmith Program is based on neuroscience research demonstrating that it is possible to address learning disabilities by identifying and strengthening weak cognitive capacities. Arrowsmith School, Toronto, Canada has used this program successfully since 1980. The goal of the Arrowsmith Program is to help students strengthen the weak cognitive capacities underlying their learning dysfunctions and to enable them to become effective, confident and self-directed learners for life. The Arrowsmith Program deals with the causes of the learning disability rather than managing its symptoms. Students become effective learners without having to compensate for their learning disabilities. Their ability to perform complex tasks is improved when the weak cognitive areas are strengthened. For further information on the Research and Development Project, please email: eoc.arrowsmith@syd.catholic.edu.au For further information on the Arrowsmith Program please visit: www.arrowsmithschool.org arrowsmith program

HOW DO I KNOW IF MY CHILD IS A SUITABLE STUDENT FOR THE ARROWSMITH PROGRAM? The Arrowsmith Program addresses nineteen cognitive functions as described on the Arrowsmith website. A suitable student would have a combination of the learning dysfunctions described. See selection criteria on the following page. The exercises that you do for work are quite difficult for me because it really stresses my brain, and they push my brain to the limit every time. But I keep with it because I know that after the course I will be more independent and I can understand everything that I come across, and that nothing will hold me back from doing what I want to do in life. For my whole life this disorder that I have has been holding me back and not allowing me to do what I want to do, but now I have a chance. CURRENT STUDENT

o I actually look forward to going to school now because everyone is so nice to me; because the students understand what I m going through; because they ve all got learning difficulties like me. CURRENT STUDENT HOW WILL THE ARROWSMITH PROGRAM HELP STUDENTS WITH LEARNING DIFFICULTIES? The program: + builds and strengthens cognitive processes that are necessary for more efficient learning + trains visual and auditory memory as well as attention and concentration + improves the fine motor skills necessary for writing and note-taking + strengthens working memory, processing speed and cognitive efficiency + strengthens executive functions + builds the capacity for both verbal and non-verbal thinking, reasoning and problem solving. The program provides: + a detailed assessment of nineteen cognitive functions + innovative methods which include specialised cognitive exercises + clearly defined and individualised goals + a positive, supportive and structured learning environment + low student to teacher ratio (10:1) + the building of self-esteem by developing competence.

HOW IS A STUDENT SELECTED FOR THE research and development project? The students selected will be: + currently enrolled in Years 9 and 10 in Sydney systemic Catholic school. The CEO Enrolment Policy can be found at www.ceosyd.catholic.edu.au/about/documents/ broc-enrolment.pdf + identified and validated by the CEO Sydney Validation Team as having a specific learning difficulty + receiving documented curriculum adjustments in the mainstream setting + nominated by the school s Learning Support Team, reviewed by the Regional Adviser, and approved by the CEO Sydney Arrowsmith Advisory Committee as being a suitable student + supported by parents/carers who are willing for their child to participate in the program and who sign a Parent/Carer Agreement of Commitment to the program + willing to consider alternative education pathways if necessary + eligible for the program as defined by the following criteria. The typical student in the Arrowsmith Program: + is of average or above average intelligence + has a combination of the learning dysfunctions that are described on the Arrowsmith School website: www.arrowsmithschool.org/arrowsmithprogram-background/ ld-descriptions.html + does not have severe intellectual, cognitive, emotional or behavioural disorders that would significantly affect his or her ability to participate in the Arrowsmith Program + does not have acquired brain injury or an autism spectrum disorder. arrowsmith

HOW WILL the PROGRAM OPERATE? Where Eileen O Connor Centre, Lewisham 7 Thomas Street, Lewisham 2049 When The Research and Development Project commences in February 2013 and runs until December 2014. What Students will participate in six 40-minute periods of Arrowsmith cognitive exercises each day and two periods of other subjects. These subjects will be determined after a discussion between the parent/carer, the student s current teacher/s and the Arrowsmith teachers. The Board of Studies curriculum will be delivered according to the ability of the students while participating in the project. FEES A fee of $8000 per annum will be charged to parents/ carers to cover system tuition fees, building levies, local fees, books, resources and the costs payable to the Arrowsmith Program. (The licence fee for students enrolled in the Arrowsmith Program is a non-refundable annual fee of AUD $4500). Families with two or three children attending Sydney Catholic systemic schools are eligible for second or third child discounts on system tuition fees. Families with four or more children attending these schools will not be charged tuition fees for their fourth child and subsequent children. Families who have a genuine inability to pay tuition fees or other charges are invited to speak with their school Principal. a p This document includes information provided by the Arrowsmith Program (www.arrowsmithschool.org).

arrowsmith program After six months in the program, our son is a different child. He is much more confident, is willing to try new things and has increased self-esteem. He is showing more initiative and he is happy at school. Once we started noticing the changes, they just seemed to keep occurring. He is now able to understand things the first time he hears them, he contributes to conversation, he is able to follow verbal instructions more easily, and he can plan and organise.
