The student will be introduced to the concept of reflection and reflecting on practice in a health care setting. Unit 1 Communication Essential Clinical Skills Learning Outcomes Following completion of this module the student should be able to: Unit 1 Communication Discuss models and theories of communication underpinning ways of communicating and interacting with different patients with different social, cultural and ethnic identifies; variant health care needs; people with disability and children. Describe barriers to communication in the clinical setting Discuss the principles of good listening Discuss the principles of empathy and respect Discuss the nature of touch used in nursing Demonstrate skills of reflection and self awareness Discuss one s own practice, using frameworks for reflection, with particular emphasis on communication skills Discuss ways of establishing effective professional relationships with clients, nursing Page 1 of 5

colleagues and with other professional s members of the health care team. Discuss professional requirements in relation to communication and professional relationships Outline communication techniques that enhance the development of therapeutic relationships. Discuss the role of Information Technology in communication in contemporary nursing Identify and apply health and safety standards in the health care setting. Demonstrate an understanding of core clinical skills relevant to their practice placements. Understand the principles of effective communication techniques when delivering clinical skills in the health care setting. Teaching and Learning Activities Lectures Tutorials Practicals Directed learning Indicative Content Unit 1 Communication (14 lectures, 6 tutorials) An outline of professional requirements related to communication according to An Bord Altranais An overview of the Communication Process and theories of Communication as applied to nursing A consideration of some factors that enhance/inhibit communication- including the patient with alteration in ability to communicate ie: hearing impairment, speech difficulties, visual disturbance, and language barriers. An exploration of empathy An outline of the principles of respect, dignity, trust, touch and their application to nursing. An introduction to the skills of good listening and attending An introduction to therapeutic Communication Skills and the nurse/patient relationship An introduction to the concept of reflection in nursing and models/frameworks for reflection An overview of how refection can contribute to self development and self awareness Self awareness An outline of communication as it relates to issues regarding sexuality and body image An introduction to theoretical models of Intercultural communication. Consideration of values, beliefs, attitudes, stereotyping, prejudice, culture/ethnicity and how an understanding of these is relevant to nursing practice An introduction to assertiveness and conflict resolution An overview of the relevance of Information Technology for contemporary nursing communication practice Communication Strategies for Children - Clinical skills for Nursing Practice (29 Shared Practical s) Introduction to the health care area and health and safety precautions Hand Hygiene techniques Moving and Handling CPR-Cardiac Pulmonary Resuscitation and introduction Vital Signs Temperature, Blood pressure, Pulse Respiration and Peak Flow Eating, Drinking, Fluid Balance and Blood Glucose monitoring Urinalysis and Toileting Administration of Medications and Injection Technique Skin Care, Personal and Oral Hygiene Infection Control Management of Aggression Respiratory Therapy Introduction to Intravenous Therapy Risk Assessment, reduction and protocols for therapeutic management of behaviours, infections and other related practices shall be addressed.
