1 Assessment & Rehabilitation Unit BALFOUR HOSPITAL STUDENTS HANDOUT WHAT WE OFFER We believe that the older patient is an individual and therefore promote individualised care. This entails: Patient centred approach to care Accountability of the nurse to patients and the profession Recognising the rights of patients to participate in planning and carrying out their care Supporting the contribution made by relatives and past carers Showing respect for the individual Adherence to the principles of beneficence and non-malfeasance Standards of care The ward is staffed by experienced nurses who possess a wide variety of skills and knowledge. The staff are keen to pass on their expertise in this field of nursing and also hope to be able to gain a greater insight into the needs of students as well as building up a relationship with them. During your stay with us you will be under the supervision of a registered nurse who will exercise accountability as directed by the NMC guidelines. Students will hold a degree of responsibility for their own actions. Students are expected to work with the staff and as a result learn and develop their skills in the following ways. Communication Skills Attitudes towards the elderly / non-stereotyping of patients Verbal & non-verbal communication with clients and relatives Self awareness Documentation of care Mobility Prevention and treatment of pressure sores Effective moving & handling techniques Safety aspects Use of aids for mobility Elimination Promotion of continence Effective management of incontinence Prevention of constipation 1

3 Students at all stages will participate in nursing care within the ward setting whilst being supervised by a registered mentor. Recognise individuality and need for privacy. Personal care bathing, showering, skin care hair care nail care. Care of dentures Care of patient s toiletries and clothes. Recording of vital signs: - temperature, pulse and respirations. Monitoring of blood pressure. Blood glucose monitoring. Urinalysis Simple dressings Prevention and treatment of pressure sores Effective moving and handling techniques. Safety aspects Use of aids for mobility. Feeding of patients Recording of fluid intake and urinary output Keeping a food chart. Additionally Stages 2 / 3 Promotion of incontinence & effective management Additionally Stages 3 / 4 Dealing with difficult situations Care of dying privacy, supporting the relatives, recognising patients wishes. Year 1 Observe clinical procedures and participate where appropriate More complex wounds Insertion of urinary catheters Catheter maintenance. Administration of medicines Calculating of dosages of medicines. Administration of S/C, I/M, S/L & inhalation medicines Care of PEG tube. Feeding a patient via a PEG tube. Control of Infection Hand hygiene Waste disposal of infected waste / normal/soiled waste- clinical and domestic. Hospital acquired infection and cross infection/prevention and management. Swabbing patients for MRSA Enhance communication skills with patients, family and members of the ward team Keep a reflective diary on bad and good communication incidents.
