About your investor style Protecting your money is your most important concern. You may be approaching retirement, or simply prefer to preserve your money and take a cautious approach to investing. You want your money to grow but are more concerned about protecting it. Retirement may be in your near future, or you may prefer to be cautious with your investments and preserve your money. You want a balance between growth and stability, although you will accept some risk to have the potential for higher returns over time. You want to increase your money and are somewhat comfortable riding the ups and downs of the market in exchange for the possibility of higher returns over the long term. You may have time on your side until you retire. You want to maximize the long-term growth of your retirement savings. You understand the ups and downs of the markets and are comfortable taking a lot of risk to maximize potential returns. You have plenty of time to wait out market cycles until you retire. 5

2) Selecting your investments Match your investor style to a sample portfolio (see below) that will provide you with a guideline to help you choose the appropriate funds. You can create a portfolio by combining funds across asset class, volatility, fund manager and style to ensure you have a truly diversified portfolio. Remember you should diversify based on the expected volatility of your funds as well as asset class. For example, a conservative investor style should not necessarily select all conservative funds. As shown in the sample below, a conservative investor portfolio should include funds from different asset classes Equity, U.S. Large Cap Equity, Fixed Income, and Money Market and Guaranteed Investment Accounts. Here is a sample portfolio for each investor style. These are examples of well-diversified portfolios for each investor style. To ensure you create a diversified portfolio, it is important to select at least one fund from each asset class. What does it mean to build your own portfolio? Deciding to build your own portfolio means you are prepared to monitor and manage your investments on a regular, ongoing basis.
