THE UNIVERSITY OF THE WEST INDIES ST. AUGUSTINE, TRINIDAD AND TOBAGO, WEST INDIES THE MAIN LIBRARY BIBLIOGRAPHIC REFERENCES FOR PSYCHOLOGY/EDUCATION BASED ON APA STYLE JULY 2007
INTRODUCTION When preparing a bibliography for a thesis, compiling a list of references or actually referring to another work within an essay, term paper or article, it is important for references to be correct and complete. The method of citation varies from one field to another and therefore each Faculty on campus has its own style. The Publication Manual of the American Psychological Association (5 th ed.) is the style which is recommended and accepted by The University of the West Indies for theses and other scholarly writing in Psychology and Education. Citation in Text APA uses the author-date method of citation: that is the surname of author and the year of publication are inserted in the text at the appropriate point. This style of citation identifies the source for readers and enables them to locate the source of information in the alphabetical reference list at the end of your paper, project, or thesis. Examples Gopaul- McNicol (1993) observed In a study of the sex trade in the Caribbean ( Kempadoo, 1999) Skinner, Feather, Freeman and Roche (2007) found Reference List All citations in the text must appear in the reference list. Each entry in the reference list usually contains the following elements: Books Author: name of author(s); or editor(s) or name of institution responsible for the writing of the book Date of Publication Title: full title of the book, including subtitle if there is one Editor, compiler, or translator, if any, and if, in addition to listed author Edition, if not the first edition Volumes: total number if multi-volume work is referred to as a whole Volume number of multi-volume work, if single volume is cited.
