The classes of the course units in this list are taught in Dutch. Tutoring and supervision is in English. English course material is available as well. A sufficient level of language skills (Dutch or English or French) is required for placements and internships. Integration OT Competences: Outplacement 1 ECTS credits: 12 Course Unit Code: 23ERG1070 Coordinator:Johan Lemmens/Sylvia Depoortere Period: Autumn Content In this educational part the student learns to develop cliënt-orientated activities: planning, organizing, executing and evaluating the professional-oriented occupational therapy acting. The professional- and the derived educational profile are the steering factors. The aim is that the student will be able to act professionally independent at the end of the period, within a specific professional context. At the end of his clinical placement the student is able to situate himself and create a profile for himself as an occupational therapist within the health care and public welfare of the country in which he s staying. The student is brought into contact with a real therapeutic situation. During this clinical process the student is coached by a practical training supervisor. A lot of attention is paid to integration of the practice and the theory. This happens by means of the systematic draw up of a training report. The link between own training experiences and the given theory is deepened at meetings, together with fellow students, in small education groups accompanied by a tutor (teacher/occupational therapist). In this meetings attention is given mainly to ethical and deontological problems which can occur. The student learns to analyse and formulate these problems thoroughly. Out of a critical analysis he also learns to formulate solutions. Study materials Guidelines provided by PXL occupational therapy in a booklet, including description of the expected competences, the assignments, deadlines and grade system. Recommended study materials Depending on the goals for the clientgroup, the student has to gather information out of his own theoretical knowledge basis and the courses he/she already passed. He/she also has to search for more professional information on the internet and on databases provided by PXL. Evaluation Permanent evaluation during the apprenticeship, both at school by a teacher and by a training supervisor at the placement. The student is also judged on the basis of a personal apprenticeship book. This book needs to be worked out according to the specific guidelines of the education. Foreign students can work out this apprenticeship book in English or French. The judgement happens on the basis of several conversations with the apprenticeship supervisors in the presence of the student. The educational profile - translated into competences - framework is used with this judgement. This list of competences was drawn up by the professional association and the Belgian training institutes for occupational therapy.
Elective Courses on Healthcare issues ECTS credits: 5 Course Unit Code: 23ERA9129 / 23 ERA9130 Coordinator: Erwin Vanroye/ Mimi Market Period: autumn Content Option specific programs / projects. In this course the student can choose for in-depth programs organised by PXL or a EU partner (sometimes combined with distance learning and multi-professional context) themes can be ergonomics, entrepreneurship, etc Option international programs / projects: Within these international programs, we focus on specific topics in health care that are provided in an international and multidisciplinary context. By working with well known partners in an international context for years, we can ensure optimal quality. Sometimes the international course will be organised in Belgium, but can be linked to another international program. The different options only can be organised for sure, after the decision just before the start of the academic year. Option extra ordinary internship: The student does an exploratory internship going from the study load of 5 credits. The purpose of this internship option is to come to specific, innovative insight in occupational therapy for the specific placement. The coordinator has to decide if the placement is OK. It must be a field exploratory internship: an extra ordinary internship by its nature or by its way of working, totally different from the regular internships. Students thus have the opportunity to determine which tasks can include an occupational therapist there. The main goal of the training will therefore focus on observation and analysis by participation. The student must follow the prescribed procedure when applying for an internship choice. Final competences Depending on the chozen option different goals can be reached: The student reaches the quality of professional reasoning by use of the HOPP(Hasselt Occupational Performance Profile) in multi-complexe case-studies and explores new domains within OT. The student can reflect in an innovative perspective about OT for the future. The student underpins his innovative vision on OT and can present his vision. He has a clear view on OT and health in a EU context. All these goals will be reached in a multidisciplinary and international context.
Working in a team is a condition to reach this goals. The student experiences and recognizes the benefits of multicultural work. Evaluation Evaluation is based on the way of participation at this module, and part on a written report according to the instructions in the course manual.
Module Enabling occupation ECTS credits: 3 Course Unit Code: 22ERG1110 Coordinator: Loeka Vanderborcht/Jan Valy Period: Spring Content: This module is concentrated in one intensive week in march, but has a prepatory meeting of one day in December. Students of the second BA year of OT education are, together with students physiotherapy and nurses, responsible for a residential week with disabled people. Students learn to work in teams of different professions. This week has to be a week of vacation for the clients. The disabled people must be able to participate in sports activities and creative activities, and have to be guided in the ADL by the student teams. On the introduction day students get lots of information of this week, they also get the information of their preparative work. They are also able to participate activities together with the clients on this day. This educational part aims at: - learn to live and work with cliënts with disabilities - do some self study with the objective to learn to know more about specific pathologies - to prepare activities for disabled cliënts - guide a cliënt group through the activities - have a professional contact with the cliënts - for one week live together with clients - work together in a team of different professions Study materials All theory of previous modules in the curriculum, and results of own research of the specific subjects Teaching organization Problem Based Learning method: lecture, project work and independent study Prerequisites: Already achieved credits: all the credits of the First year of the OT education, or achieved credits of a comparable module. Bachelor Project ECTS credits: 10 Course Unit Code: 23ERG1120 Coordinator: Annemie Spooren/Christine Smeets Period: Spring Content This bachelor project is the result of process: a personal literature review to explore the theory and practice of occupational therapy ending in a written report/paper. This process to create a scientific paper allows students to acquire specific competencies. Knowledge, skills and attitudes, acquired in the course of the past training, come together in function of the used theme. To help the student in this process important learning contents is offered at regular intervals together with intensive support by teachers. The bachelor project is normally related to the project-outplacement. During the outplacement, the student has to proof that he is able to work on a project in a professional and independent way. Bachelor project thema s are focused on the autonomy of the client in living, working, learning and leisure, related to the various target groups within the framework of the biopsychosocial model and occupational therapy practice models. The presentation of the project thema s for 2014-2015 happens at the end of the second semester (April-june 2014). From these thema s, the student chooses a topic. The student may specify his or her preference. As far as possible, the teacherteam will taken into account the choice of the student. Prerequisites Introduction in occupational science and evidence based occupational therapy. The use and understanding of terminology used in occupational therapy and scientific research. Understanding basic statistics (practical use). Final competences -The student understands the basic concepts of scientific research methodology. -The student can read and understand recent scientific information related to the occupational therapy and assess relevance of this applied research for the practice. The student can search for professional and scientific information on the internet and on databases provided by PXL. -The student can translate daily problems of OT practice to a research question. -The student can translate new insights and recent scientific information related to occupational therapy to the practice of daily work, by the use of methods such as interviews, observations and assessments.
-The student can communicate orally and in writing report to the team: fellow students, promoter and external partner. -The student can participate actively in a conference through lecture, poster or workshop. -The student can discuss the added value of his bachelor project for the discipline of occupational therapy with professionals. -The student can cooperate through the process of his bachelor project with fellow students, promoter and external partners -The student can build a literature list according to the established rules. -Attitude: reflective thinking and acting, task-oriented behaving, cooperation, sense of responsibility, independence, flexibility and frustration tolerance. Evaluation Evaluated on the basis of: - Process evaluation: peer- and self-evaluation based on a logbook. - Presentation of a written paper. The foreign student can work out this assignment in written English or French. - Oral presentation (Yearly organized bachelor conference): the oral presentation of the thesis can be done in English or French.

The student can discuss and interact with promotor and other professionals about the project. He can make a report of the discussions. He can communicate in a efficient way with all parties in the process. The student has a meaningful input, and manifests itself as a professional occupational therapist in the team. The student coaches and takes the lead in a structured team. The student analyses his own process and occupation and he adapts this depending on feedback of his coaches or other students. The student can develop a product of the project(a folder, an instrument, ) according to the project goals. The student coordinates autonomically the meetings with other projectworkers to realize the outcomes of the project. The student can widen his view on occupational therapy, based on international references, and compare with the project work he does. The student can reflect on the ethical issues of his project, and can analyse his own occupation within this view. The student can, by his project, realize an innovative contribution for OT in this specific project.
