About Us
American Manual Medicine Association Mission Statement The AMMA exists to support, assist, and improve the practice of manual medicine by promoting the development and practice of evidence-based medicine through continuing medical education and training. The AMMA is committed to the principle that truth is revealed through independent investigation and knowledge results from research; the AMMA seeks to relate manual therapy education to the needs of contemporary medical, alternative, and allied health practitioners.
The American Manual Medicine Association was founded in 1997 by Dr. Gregory T. Lawton, a licensed Chiropractor in Michigan and Illinois, a licensed Naprapath in Illinois, and a certified acupuncturist in Idaho. Today the American Manual Medicine Association membership is comprised of over 5000 physicians, including medical, osteopathic, chiropractic, naprapathic and naturopathic, as well as, physical and massage therapists, nurses, and acupuncturists.
The American Manual Medicine Association and the Academy of Scandinavian Mobilization Therapy are both part of a consortium of national associations under the management of American Health Source, Inc. American Health Source was established in 1980 and AHS provides management, publication, liability insurance and psychometric testing for national board examinations.
In the late 1990 s the American Manual Medicine Association began providing advanced training in manual and mobilization therapy for physicians, physical and massage therapists, and nurses.
The American Manual Medicine Association was created to promote education in manual and mobilization therapy, as well as, inter - professional understanding and cooperation among the diverse family of physicians and practitioners that practice manual medicine.
The American Manual Medicine Association provides the manual medicine community with: 1. High Quality Advanced Education and Training 2. National Board Certification and Examination 3. Advanced Professional Credentialing 4. Professional Malpractice and Liability Insurance
The American Manual Medicine Association conducts high quality continuing education seminars, in a wide range of professional topics.
The Academy and the AMMA both offer multi-level training and credentialing to physicians and allied health care professionals.
The American Manual Medicine Association established the Academy of Scandinavian Mobilization Therapy to conduct advanced multilevel training programs in manual and mobilization therapy, and manual medicine. The Academy currently has nine levels of training including diplomate and master credentialing in naprapathic medicine.

The AMMA and the Academy provide advanced professional training and credentialing - Diplomate in Manual Medicine Diplomate in Naprapathy Master of Naprapathic Sciences Diplomate in Scandinavian Mobilization Therapy Naturopathic Diplomate Diplomate in Medical Acupuncture Certificate in Practical Acupuncture and other certifications.
The National Broad Certifying Agency (NBCA) is responsible for the creation, administration, and psychometric evaluation of American Manual Medicine Association national board exams.
The NBCA manages and administers several professional national board certification and diplomate examination instruments.
The AMMA and the Academy of Scandinavian Mobilization Therapy have created high quality training manuals and video programs for your training.
The Academy of Scandinavian Mobilization Therapy is a division of the AMMA which is a state licensed post secondary school. In addition the AMMA has a second state licensed post secondary school, the Blue Heron Academy of Healing Arts and Sciences. The Academy is conveniently located adjacent to Calvin College at the corner of the Beltline (M37) and Burton Street. We are nestled in a beautiful setting on a pond where Blue Herons often come to visit. When you see this building, 2040 Raybrook SE, Grand Rapids, Michigan you have arrived at the Academy.
The Academy has several classrooms, a computer lab and library, and a public treatment clinic. All classrooms and the clinic are fully equipped with the equipment students need for high level training.
