CLIMATE CHANGE AND GREENHOUSE GAS CONSULTING SERVICES

HDR can help you with greenhouse gas inventory development and reporting to meet emerging regulatory compliance. Just north of Pasadena, California, Air Force Plant 42 benefited from a greenhouse gas survey and quality compliance support services provided by HDR. A Changing World Climate change has been described as the greatest environmental challenge facing the world today. As a result, communities, government agencies and businesses have increased efforts to quantify, reduce and monitor greenhouse gas emissions, as awareness grows of the associated economic, social and environmental benefits. Efforts to understand the societal and economic implications of climate change have led to a growing appreciation that the combination of greenhouse gas emissions and natural variability of the atmosphere-ocean interactions creates a significant and complex challenge. The focus has shifted from a static debate over whether to do anything about climate change and greenhouse gas emissions to being proactive in the face of rapid change on multiple fronts: legislative, regulatory, scientific and economic. The catalysts for action are in place. Economic incentives to improve efficiencies in business operations exist across all sectors. The push for credible climate change strategies affects communities and companies, large and small. There is a need to understand carbon footprints, emerging regulatory requirements, reporting protocols and mitigation options with effective and cost-conscious strategies that bring results across the triple bottom line of environmental, economic and social benefits. HDR works with all sizes of cities large and small to provide environmental analyses that move projects forward. We help build renewable energy networks across North America.

HDR provided energy efficiency, conservation and greenhouse gas consulting services to Corpus Christi, Texas. The HDR Difference Leadership As a recognized industry leader in sustainable solutions, HDR has been proactive in developing innovative ways for clients to address climate change and greenhouse gas management. We use defensible methodologies to collect and report data and identify actions to reduce or stabilize emissions. We also help prepare for compliance with mandatory emissions reporting and potential cap and trade legislation. Representatives from the public and private sectors recognize the need to address climate change and greenhouse gas management issues in an environmentally proactive way that enhances the business bottom line and advances green services and technologies. From water resources to transportation and mass transit, power and energy, architectural design and solid waste management, the specialized resources of HDR can help you navigate the spectrum of choices and strategies in this emerging field. HDR is well-positioned to help guide clients through the process of identifying opportunities and solutions to climate change and greenhouse gas management challenges. HDR has experience in every aspect of the built and natural environment, with a combination of skills in technical engineering, building design and economic modeling. We offer a proactive focus on sustainable solutions complemented with specialized tools to measure sustainable return on investment. The Power of Credentials HDR has staff with advanced skills in: Greenhouse gas accounting, monitoring and reporting Climate action planning Energy management Atmospheric science Air and water quality Economics Risk analysis These professionals work together to help our clients develop and implement sound strategies to address near- and long-term concerns.

A scientifically defensible climate change and design storm analysis supports delineation of the South Boulder Creek floodplain in Colorado. Planning and Consulting Services to Meet Your Needs HDR provides tailored services in greenhouse gas consulting and climate change assessment. Our multi-disciplinary experts work together to link those services that best meet the needs of each client. Greenhouse Gas Management Greenhouse gas accounting, planning and consulting Carbon market consulting and carbon technical advisory services Carbon capture and sequestration Compliance with EPA and other regulations regarding greenhouse gas inventory and reporting Climate Change Assessment Climate variability impact assessment/water supply and adaptation strategies Climate variability impact assessment/weather and climate prediction NEPA environmental assessments and climate impact analyses HDR provided landfill gas carbon technical advisory services for a South Carolina landfill. A drought management plan prepared by HDR for Flathead Lake in Montana links historic climatic indicators with seasonal stream flow. HDR provides these services across a broad range of markets and clients: Sustainable Community Development Integrated community sustainability planning Community consulting Urban redevelopment design Greenhouse gas inventory development/carbon footprinting Climate action planning Energy management planning Sustainable site design Green Buildings, Facilities & Capital Programs LEED consulting and green building design Building energy modeling and energy audits Asset management Federal facilities executive order compliance Carbon neutral design Natural Resources & Environmental Stewardship NEPA alternative analysis and evaluation Extreme precipitation analysis and flood warning services Climate dynamics and ecosystem analysis Urban heat island analysis Energy Systems Carbon management for fossil fuel-based systems Examination of carbon capture technologies for power generation plants Renewable energy project design and portfolio planning Building and campus energy optimization Smart grid transmission and distribution LED lighting programs

An SROI analysis supported campus programming for sustainability and LEED construction at Johns Hopkins University in Baltimore, Maryland. Water Systems Water and wastewater treatment facility energy optimization and risk/resilience analysis Water footprinting Water-energy nexus evaluation Water supply/demand climate impact assessment Waste and Material Recovery Zero waste planning Integrated solid waste management Carbon market advisory and assistance Site-specifi c carbon assessment planning and management Mobility Greenhouse gas modeling for transit and automotive modes Transportation planning and transitoriented design Integrated multi-modal and land use systems Context sensitive solutions Complete streets Sustainable Return on Investment Across all these services, HDR uses the Sustainable Return on Investment (SROI) methodology developed by our in-house economists to assess the triple bottom line costs and benefits of investment decisions. SROI is a four-step process that helps decision makers measure the sustainability of projects and alternatives by assigning monetary values to elements of environmental, economic and social impacts of each alternative. SROI quantifies intangible values such as lower greenhouse gas emissions, safety improvements, environmental quality and creation of green jobs. This is done by using a transparent process that defines the levels of risk and uncertainty associated with a project. SROI can also be used to screen and prioritize greenhouse gas emission reduction strategies and to help secure grants and identify other funding sources by demonstrating the sustainability benefits of a project.

HDR purchases renewable energy credits equivalent to 100 percent of annual electricity use at its corporate headquarters campus in Omaha, Nebraska. HDR performed a carbon trading analysis for Enbridge Gas Distribution Services in Toronto, Canada. HDR evaluated climate change impacts as part of the Susitna River Hydroelectric Feasibility Study in Alaska. Partnerships HDR participates with leading organizations involved in defining the impacts of climate change on critical infrastructure and greenhouse gas management, including: U.S. Conference of Mayors Climate Protection Council U.S. Green Building Council The Climate Group Columbia Earth Institute Global Roundtable on Climate Change (GRCC) Clinton Global Initiative and Clinton Climate Initiative United Engineering Foundation (UEF) Founders Society (FS) Technologies for Carbon Management Project Solid Waste Association of North America American Meteorological Society Board of Certified Consulting Meteorologists Board of Economic Enterprise Development National Council of Industrial Meteorologists American Water Resources Association Association of State Floodplain Managers Waste-to-Energy Research and Technology Council (WTERT) Walking the Talk HDR understands that sustainability is important to our clients. We want our clients to know that sustainability is important to how we operate as an organization. We have calculated our baseline carbon footprint and continue to seek opportunities to reduce or offset this footprint, including the purchase of enough renewable energy credits equivalent to powering our headquarters campus. Integrated sustainable solutions are not just what we offer clients they are part of our corporate culture as we conduct business every day. The HDR Denver, Colorado, office achieved LEED Silver Certification for Commercial Interiors.

HDR prepared an environmental impact statement for a rail acquisition by Canadian National Railway. HDR is leading Los Angeles toward a zero waste future.
