MTAM Mission Statement To promote and enhance the art, science and philosophy of massage therapy in a professional and ethical manner to ensure the highest level of competency based practice for massage therapy within the province of Manitoba.
Established 1973 The MTAM is a volunteer based self-governing non-profit association with a current membership of over 775 professional registered massage therapists and student members. The Association was incorporated in 1973 and is proud of its 39 years representing the profession of massage therapy in Manitoba. Our AGM in April 2013 will mark our 40 th Anniversary!
MTAM Goals To promote the massage therapy profession To provide services and support to our members To protect the public by ensuring safe, competent and ethical massage practice. To maintain high professional standards in the profession through peer review of in-school examination, by requiring compulsory continuing education, by advocating for province-wide regulation, and by maintaining a peer disciplinary process. To maintain member accountability through MTAM by-laws and policies, a professional Code of Ethics, mandatory continuing competency activities, and Standards of Practice.

The MTAM in Action COLLABORATION & COMMUNICATION: The MTAM maintains ongoing open communication and liaison with: Insurance companies Massage therapy schools (esp. MTCM & Wellington) All levels of government (federal, provincial, municipal) Massage therapy provincial associations Massage therapy regulatory colleges in Canada Other health professions (associations & regulators) PUBLIC RELATIONS: The MTAM speaks to the general public on issues impacting the profession, and to the media to promote the profession.
The MTAM in Action LEGISLATION: The MTAM has been actively working toward provincial legislation for the profession of Massage Therapy in the Province of Manitoba, similar to that found in Ontario, BC and Newfoundland & Labrador In Spring 2012, the MTAM submitted a formal application to the Minister of Health for regulation of massage therapy in Manitoba. LICENSING: The MTAM has worked closely with the City of Winnipeg and other municipalities on massage therapy licensing required to work within their jurisdiction. (City of Winnipeg stopped licensing massage therapists in June 2008.)
The MTAM in Action PRIVACY ACTS: The MTAM has represented its members and the profession on the review of the Privacy Acts in Manitoba (trustee status under PHIA) COMPLAINTS & DISCIPLINE: The MTAM receives and investigates complaints regarding members, and disciplines members through an open and fair process when necessary.
The MTAM in Action RESEARCH: The MTAM promotes research in the practices of the profession through its Research Committee and affiliation with other research initiatives such as the Massage Therapy Research Fund (MTRF) and the Massage Therapy Foundation (MTF). INSURANCE: The MTAM represents and advocates for its members with major insurance providers such as Blue Cross, Great West Life, Investors Syndicate, Sun Life, Manulife, etc. (Canadian Life & Health Insurance Association)
The MTAM in Action WCB: The MTAM represented its members at the review of the Workers Compensation Board Act. Our key concerns are: Massage Therapy status within the Act Initiate negotiations to establish an agreement with WCB for Massage Therapy coverage for clients of WCB (Similar to Saskatchewan and British Columbia) MPI (Autopac): The MTAM continues to represent its members and the profession with MPI To gain Massage Therapists status within the Act To negotiate an agreement with MPI for Massage Therapy coverage for clients of MPI (Similar to Saskatchewan and British Columbia)
The MTAM in Action The MTAM actively represents Massage Therapists on discussions re: labour mobility within Canada The MTAM represented Manitoba massage therapists at national meetings regarding the Canadian Inter-jurisdictional Entry-to-Practice Competency Profile for Massage Therapists. Competency profile released June 2010 150 practice competencies identified Performance Indicators for each competency were developed and endorsed in Summer 2012 by the MT Regulatory Colleges & the MTAM.

Becoming a Member How do I become a Member?
MTAM Classes of Membership Practicing Member Application Requirements: Completed a minimum 2 year / 2200-hour course from a school of massage therapy registered with Department of Education in Manitoba or in another province where the course was completed, and: (i) achieve a minimum GPA of 75% during your course of studies (ii) supply a copy of the massage therapy diploma and final transcript (iii) supply a copy of current CPR-level C certificate (iv) supply a copy of current Standard or Emergency First Aid certificate Provide a current Criminal Record Check with Vulnerable Sector Search (RCMP or Winnipeg Police Services), and disclosure of criminal record Complete the MTAM Application form & Undertaking of Agreement Pay the required membership and insurance fees (Pro-rated payment and installment plans available)
Other Classes of memberships Non-practicing Member Provides a Practicing member a means to remain in the profession of massage therapy without having to re-apply for membership. Assists therapists going back to school on a full-time basis, or who are travelling for an extended period, or who are on maternity leave. Allows members most privileges of a Practising Member, except liability insurance, voting and serving on the Board of Directors. Associate Member: An Associate Member is an individual or company who supports and promotes the philosophy of the MTAM.
Other membership classes Student Membership: An applicant for Student Membership must be registered as a student in a massage therapy school. To apply for Student Membership, send in your application with proof of acceptance or attendance by your registered Massage Therapy School in Manitoba. If you submit your student membership application at today s presentation, you do not need proof of attendance from your school! This membership category is FREE to all students attending registered schools of Massage Therapy in Manitoba.

Issues in the Manitoba Market! No provincial legislation / regulation of massage therapy practice anyone can provide massage therapy! Competitive market place - massage therapy being provided by under-qualified practitioners (e.g., estheticians, holistic practitioners, massage certificate holders), and by other health professionals who also provide massage (e.g., PT, AT). Massage therapy coverage through private health plans who & what is covered, fraud prevention, $$$, etc. Limited public protection lack of title protection, complaints process, ethics, practice standards, etc.
Issues in the Manitoba Market Massage Parlour & Massagist licensing issues Income tax deductibility for massage therapy treatments Elimination of the GST on massage therapy treatments Professional relationships with MDs, PTs, etc. (Rx/referral) RMTs & Acupuncture, Laser Therapy, Lymphedema Therapy Advertising scope of practice issues, potentially misleading content (e.g., testimonials), internet coupons
The MTAM Does Research 42% of Manitoba adults reported having been to a Massage Therapist at some point. 27% reported having been to a Massage Therapist in the last 12 months. Women are more likely than men (52% vs. 30%) to have seen a Massage Therapist. 55% reported they had seen a Massage Therapist to address therapeutic needs. 33% reported their visit was to relieve stress. (Little variation across gender, age and other sociodemographic groups.) The single most common response for not going to a Massage Therapist was Never need it (54%) and the second (14%) was Never thought of going! untapped market?
Research public views Top of Mind views about Massage Therapy include: relaxation, enjoyment or feeling better (38%). 41% of respondents are strongly convinced that high professional standards are currently in place. 63% felt that Massage Therapy would provide good value for the money, with this figure climbing to 86% when the views of those who actually used the services were examined in isolation from non users. 85% of Manitobans would be more likely to consider availing themselves of the services of a massage therapist if they were legislated.
Committees do Research! Pacific Blue Cross reported that the percentage paid by their paramedical category in their plans for 2006 was: Massage Therapy 37% Physiotherapy 24% Chiropractic 22% (Almost $18 Million expended on Massage Therapy!) (Manitoba percentages are similar.)
