SOUTH AFRICA, this is a call for the Balanced Transformation we need and deserve! Early 2016 and South Africa is experiencing massive tensions along racial lines. How can this be when so many people want to say that was the past, let s put this behind. All people s perspectives, even the most racist, are valid, and understandable when looked at from a psychological perspective (fear and ignorance are a dangerous combination). This does not mean it is excusable or tolerable, but it does mean we have to change our strategies for dealing with the wounds and legacy of our past. This is primarily due to the trauma and programming of colonialism and Apartheid not being dealt with psychologically or emotionally. There are numerous ways to address this, but South Africa desperately needs its next generations to speak each others languages, especially across the divisive labels of colour. The language learning process, coupled with sincere and comprehensive understanding of our indigenous cultures and traditions would massively reduce the ignorance and prejudice in our society. Since the New South Africa s birth, there has been an emphasis on African children assimilating into European-based Culture, i.e. fitting into the European model of education and learning their languages, with very little efforts or expectations in the other direction. This is due to many reasons, to be discussed further on the UBuntu Bridge blog, and elsewhere. This imbalance has led to or at least fed the underlying sense that white culture is somehow of more value, or superior, and thus black culture is somehow of less value, or inferior. This belief lurks within the psyches of people classified as both black and white during Apartheid. In many ways this is the basis of white supremacy, and language is the way in which one culture is entrenched over another. We need to now embrace our collective heritage and all our cultures, and this means learning vernacular languages. This proposal suggests a practical way of unfolding that vision for the best South Africa we can envision, hope for, and deserve. www.ubuntubridge.org [! 1]

SOUTH AFRICAN SCHOOLS VERNACULAR LANGUAGE PROPOSAL 2016 Extra-Curriculum / Teacher Support and a vision for South Africa s people! This proposal is for people concerned about: Children of indigenous ancestry not using, learning in or respecting their own languages, & the loss of cultural connection/identity that accompanies the loss of language and tradition. Non-vernacular speaking children (mainly of European ancestry) not learning the indigenous languages, or having proper and respectful understanding of local cultures, customs and traditions. This leads to the continued divisive separation consciousness (Apartheid mindset) perpetuated by language, class and cultural divides. It is time we prioritised Balanced Transformation in our land as a way of respecting all people. With such a focus we can lead the world in terms of finding a balance between indigenous wisdom, ubuntu consciousness and the blessings of modern technology. www.ubuntubridge.org [! 2]

CURRENT SCHOOL LANGUAGE SITUATION isizulu, Sesotho and other indigenous languages remain marginalised at many schools in three ways: 1 Mother tongue learners are not learning their own languages academically, which leads to a loss of cultural connection and pride. 2 3 Non-mother tongue learners are not learning the vernacular languages, and thus losing out on connection to other cultures, and many of their peers across economic divides. Teachers are often teaching first and third language learners in the same class, which leads to boredom and/or confusion for learners. This leads to a vicious cycle: 4 5 6 7 8 Low numbers of learners doing vernacular subjects makes it challenging for schools to invest and support them. Low investment and support means lower enthusiasm from learners who are given the impression that vernacular languages are not valued as important by their peers, the schools, or society at large. Weak culture at schools and in society of valuing and speaking Vernac languages outside of mother-tongue contexts, which sustains linguistic barriers and divides in our society. South Africa s black * children losing touch with their language, and indirectly their culture and heritage. South Africa s white * children continue to grow up culturally and linguistically isolated from the majority of their peers, with negative impact on reconciliation and unity in South Africa. www.ubuntubridge.org [! 4]

REASONS (we see) for poor Vernac learning in schools & country: 1 2 3 NON-PRIORITISATION / NON-INVESTMENT: Perceived lack of value by learners, govt and education department, thus often reflected in the choice between Vernac and other more financially-focussed subjects. LACK OF LEARNER MOTIVATION: Lack of language role models, and less awareness of the benefits and social importance of Vernac language & culture. OUTDATED TEACHING AND CURRICULUM: There is no equivalent of TEFL (Teaching English as a Foreign Language) for Vernac, to assist mother-tongue teachers/tutors in engaging and guiding non-mother tongue learners. Complicated grammar foundations are emphasised too early, which sacrifice confident conversational ability in the long process of reaching presumed grammatical sufficiency. Sadly, many lose their way before then, and stop learning, or give up! LACK OF RELEVANT `IMMERSION'. 4 Infrequent immersed interaction with Vernac speakers, for example interaction with their vernac-speaking peers is done in English most of the times, because interaction is in an English or Afrikaans environment. So when do they get a chance to really speak it? This leads to an under-valuing of vernac and reduction in motivation, slowly reducing respect for and usage of the languages. www.ubuntubridge.org [! 5]

THE VERNAC SOLUTION: Instead of competing with other subjects, vernacular language learning should be part of a NATIONAL CONSCIOUSNESS, a subject we all engage with as part of our COLLECTIVE CULTURE, and it should slot seamlessly alongside other subjects and infused within all activities. 1 2 3 4 5 This requires: SUPPORTIVE EXTRA-CURRICULUM: Socially relevant, enjoyable, clear, easy, practical levels that inspires spoken confidence and cultural fluency first, and then inspires grammatical studying along with it. Learners should be learning about Kwaito, ipantsula and the street culture of the vast, South African youth, including TV programmes, local films, music, etc. This will inspire immersion (see #5 below). VIDEO MATERIALS: Clear, printed materials need to be supported with multi-platform tools, from audio mp3s to videos for classrooms (DVD and online), gamification via mobile learning apps and online learning content, also video-based. TUTORS: Enthusiastic and skilled in 3rd or foreign language Vernac teaching. (*youth employment/job creation) ROLE-MODELS: Sustaining inspired and motivated learners. CULTURAL IMMERSION: School trips, study exchange programmes, work shadows, etc in townships and rural villages, with fun activities that learners can do in groups of any size. MATERIALS 1 FUN & PRACTICAL X-tra CURRICULUM *Note: We would love to see this vision manifest in a good way, even if we were not involved. However.. UBuntu Bridge s designed for third language practical conversational learning materials have been the foundation of our teaching success since 2005. Relevant conversational context and practical progression of lessons. The course are designed with humour and emphasis on cultural insights. The courses are easy to teach from, and allow tutors to work at the pace of the learners. Existing resources and great work from other teachers, can be adapted into the structure to create a pathway of learning that can get results quickly and be developed over years: We also envision finetuned materials for a fastpaced, contemporary world, including: Online videos & classroom DVDs for teachers - Interactive audio materials for ipods and phones - mobile apps with gamification aspects - online structures and interactive forums. 2 EDUTAINING VIDEOS Our videos comprises a number of different, cutting-edge video styles, which ensure clear, easily absorbable teaching, and amusing, interactive content, which keeps learners engaged and participating. We use animation to show how words are written whilst they are being spoken on screen. Watch some demos here on our youtube channel. MOBILE APPS: We would love to create a mobile app that allows these videos to be viewed on the go, but within a learning structure, as well as having gamified apps, the future of e-learning. 3 SPECIALISED FACILITATOR TRAINING Not every school has access to naturally gifted Vernac teachers, though we know quite a few. However they are often covering many grades at once, have small (low energy) class sizes and sometimes are forced to teach first and third language learners in the same class, which is not great for anyone. Whilst the rest of this project is about supporting the teachers already working, we still need to give basic and effective training to tutors who can support the workloads of the teachers, especially in the extra-curriculum activities. TUTORS Over the years, our materials and our facilitator manuals and trainings essentially amount to Teaching Xhosa as a Foreign Language (TXFL) training (and TZFL for Zulu). We develop empathy within the mother-tongue speakers for learning the language as a third language, and give them basic tools and strategies for keeping class content simple, and focused. This helps to ensure learner confidence, ahead of ploughing through an overwhelming amount of material! FACILITATOR FEEDBACK: Teaching with UBuntu Bridge is a great experience. The teaching material is very easy to work with. The teaching methodology used is simple and straight to the point. I was very comfortable with the material as a teacher. FACILITATED VIDEO & CLASS TRAINING For facilitators of all levels, who may struggle to engage and motivate learners, we make it easier to be able to facilitate with the accompaniment of our printed manuals with step by step lessons and supporting audio materials. We wish to enrich this curriculum with supporting interactive video materials. Teachers can then facilitate the viewing of video lessons in sequential order, (where needed) with facilitated breaks for practice and assessments by the teacher. Only once satisfied that the learners have grasped that aspect of learning, will they continue to screen the videos. The facilitator can thus move at their own pace, and that of the class, with learners motivated to collaborate with the teacher, in order to view more videos. MOTIVATIONAL ROLE-MODELLING 4 ROAD SHOWS We d like to have a sponsored group who travel schools doing songs, presentations and performances, as well as facilitating discussions, setting up or supporting homestay and other immersion programmes, including language teaching, where needed. A group per province or per language. VIDEOS Humourous culture videos used in curriculum which include some cameos from well known celebrities and comedians. Facilitators and characters from the videos as well as the performances, talks, discussions in schools are charismatic and function as role-models. MUSIC Kwaito and hiphop music videos such as by Quite a White Ou have generated huge interest amongst scholars and adults alike and has sparked a renewed interest not only in the value of language learning, but in a different way of approaching this hugely important and tricky subject. www.ubuntubridge.org [! 11]

FACILITATED CULTURAL 5 EXPERIENCES - RURAL VILLAGES We facilitate Cultural Immersions with a language learning focus on: Two way knowledge transfer, i.e. avoiding the handout/ rescuer dynamic. Adventure/immersion stays in rural villages, stimulating rural economy Townships investment, stimulating micro-businesses such as township guest houses, restaurants, bicycle tours, with so much space to grow. We would like to see the education department creating mandatory work exchange programmes for prevarsity learners, such as working in rural or township businesses as interns, as well as field trips and school exchanges for schools. Encourage environmental consciousness through tree-planting, recycling initiatives, etc. - TOWNSHIPS www.ubuntubridge.org [! 12]

OUR VISION We need funders, sponsors, partners and supporters to help us realise this vision: 1 MATERIALS: We have materials for beginner learners in printed and audio format but would like to emulate our Xhosa and Zulu series into the other languages. 2 VIDEOS / MOBILE APPS: We would produce more videos in specific structures to support in teaching and in keeping learners learning engaged outside the classroom. This would include a DVD of video lessons for in-class usage by the teachers, and online/mobile access for learners. 3 4 TUTOR TRAINING: Guidance on how to teach as a foreign language and how to use our materials. We could up-skill and create employment for young facilitators and tutors, through workshops and support videos. CULTURAL IMMERSIONS: Encouraging cultural immersion programmes and events, including township and village home-stays, with engaging community interactions, run as locally-owned businesses and services. Also promoting mandatory job shadowing in rural areas for skill, language and cultural exchanges, but it will take creative marketing and planning to make this a popular, successful and sustainable part of our national culture. 5 ROAD SHOWS: Performers (who double as tutors and facilitators of the UB vision) travelling the provinces, inspiring, facilitating discussion, doing teacher workshops, etc. Become a partner!
