Advanced Topics on Astrophysical and Space Plasmas PREFACE During the 1994 International Conference on Plasma Physics held in Foz do Igua<.;u, Brazil, a group ofscientists, motivated by the recent considerable growth of the Brazilian community interest in Plasma Astrophysics and Space Plasma Physics, decided to organize an Advanced School on Astrophysical and Space Plasmas. Seven months later, from June 26 to 30, 1995, the event took place in a nice seaside resort in Guaruja, an island off the coast of Brazil, between the cities of Sao Paulo and Rio de Janeiro. The aim of this School was to bring together researchers of related areas of Plasma Astrophysics and Space Plasma Physics, providing a forum for the discussion of subject matters, existing models and techniques of common interest. It was agreed that the best way to meet that objective was to focus on a few subjects of wide interest and to invite some renowned scientists to present the reviews. The main topics covered included Particle Acceleration, Nonthermal Radiation, MHD Instabilities, Magnetic Field Reconnection, and Nonlinear Dynamics in astrophysical and space plasmas. Lectures of four and half hours on each of those subjects were presented at the School and this book brings together most of those valuable reviews. Dieter Biskamp of the Max-Planck Institute for Plasma Physics reviewed the Magnetic Field Reconnection and MHD Instabillities, Mark Birkinshaw of the Harvard-Smithsonian Center for Astrophysics and the University of Bristol reviewed the Instabilities in Cosmic Jets, Abraham Chian of the National Institute for Space Research reviewed the Nonlinear Wave-Wave Interactions in Space and Astrophysical Plasmas, Nelson Fiedler-Ferrara of the University of Sao Paulo reviewed the Chaos and Nonlinear Dynamics in Plasmas, Donald Melrose of the University of Sydney reviewed the Particle Acceleration and Nonthermal Radiation, and Anthony Peratt of the Los Alamos National Laboratory reviewed the Numerical Methods on Astrophysical and Space Plasmas. About 60 researchers and graduate students from Brazil and Argentina attended the School. This event has been financially supported by the following Brazilian science foundations: FAPESP, CNPq, and CAPES, and also by the Instituto Astronomico e Geoffsico of the University of Sao Paulo () and DEDALUS of Brazil. 2 The organizing committee was composed by Abraham Chian (National Institute for Space Research), Elisabete M. de Gouveia Dal Pino (University of Sao Paulo) (chairperson), Gustavo A. Medina Tanco (University of Sao Paulo), and Irina Potapenko (State University of Rio de Janeiro). We are indebted to Ms. Marina de Freitas, Marcia Pina Albe, Maria do Carmo Correea and Mr. Julio Klafke for their excellent logistic support during the organization of the School. We are also indebted to the Brazilian Agency FAPESP for providing financial support for the publication of this volume. Elisabete M. de Gouveia Dal Pino Anthony L. Peratt Gustavo A.
