Chapter 1: Overview The HP Vertica Solution Template enables you to monitor and troubleshoot different aspects of the Vertica cluster infrastructure with SiteScope. The HP Vertica solution template deploys a set of monitors against a particular Vertica cluster. These monitors are designed to manage large, fastgrowing volumes of data and provide fast query performance when used for data warehouses and other query-intensive applications. Vertica can be monitored by SNMP trap and System tables. Benefits of the HP Vertica Solution Template include: Reduces the need for HP Vertica performance domain expertise Reduces the time to configure and deploy HP Vertica JDBC monitors Helps identify both real-time performance bottlenecks and longer term trends Adds only negligible overhead to production systems The HP Vertica Solution Template deploys HP Vertica JDBC and SNMP Trap monitors that target the following aspects of the database's performance and health: CPU status and utilization details Memory status and utilization details Disk utilization information I/O Usage Network usage information Vertica Server node availability Vertica Server events (space available, node state change, recovery/refresh information, server errors) Vertica Server resources (critical nodes, query performance, session count, workload) HP SiteScope (11.23) Page 4 of 8
Chapter 2: Vertica Host State Group Metrics The following table lists the HP Vertica database host state group metrics that are enabled by default in the solution template. Monitor Name Counter/Metric Name Default Threshold CPU Usage Average CPU Usage % N/A Disk Space Utilization Disk Space Free % Warning if <=60% Errror if <=20% IO Usage IO Read KBytes Per Second N/A IO Written KBytes Per Second N/A Memory Usage Average Memory Usage % Warning if >=90 Error if >=98 Network Usage Network RX KBytes Per Second N/A Network TX KBytes Per Second N/A Node Availability Node State Error if!= UP HP SiteScope (11.23) Page 5 of 8
Chapter 3: SNMP Trap Events Group Metrics The Vertica solution template monitors active events on Vertica using SNMP trap. To enable event monitoring using SNMP, additional configuration is required on the Vertica database side. For details, refer to the HP Vertica Analytics Platform documentation (http://www.vertica.com/documentation/documentation-6-1/). The following lists the HP Vertica SNMP trap event group metrics that are enabled in the solution template. Low Disk Space Read Only File System Loss Of K Safety Current Fault Tolerance at Critical Level Too Many ROS Containers WOS Over Flow Node State Change Recovery Failure Recovery Error Recovery Lock Error Recovery Projection Retrieval Error Refresh Error Refresh Lock Error Tuple Mover Error Timer Service Task Error Stale Checkpoint HP SiteScope (11.23) Page 6 of 8
Chapter 4: Root Group Metrics The following table lists the HP Vertica database metrics in the solution template that can be grouped by nodes: Monitor Name Counter Name Threshold Critical Nodes Critical Nodes Warning if!= Locks Lock Duration (sec) Warning if >=60 Query Performance Longest Query Duration (sec) Warning if >=60 Longest Query N/A Session Count MaxClientSessions/Value N/A Active User Session Count N/A Session Count % Warning if >=80 Error if >=90 Workload Running Query Count Warning if >=10 HP SiteScope (11.23) Page 7 of 8
