Plan of Study for Acoustical Engineering Concentration in Multidisciplinary Engineering. 120 credits. ABET accredited (BSE). Credits First year Engineering Program: If the common first year program in engineering is changed, the BSE requirements will be changed to reflect these changes. Students are very strongly advised to take a CAD course such as CGT 16300 or 16400 during their first year in engineering. A CAD course is required for this concentration. 29-33 Communications: COM 11400 or equivalent. These courses can count towards the first year program, towards the general education program, or towards the Area requirements. Recommendation is to take COM 11400 as part of the FYE program. (3 counted elsewhere) General Education: Follow Engineering s General Education Program requirements. 18 Strongly suggest MUS 25000, MUS 36100, MUS 36200, and THTR 20100. Required sophomore mathematics: Multivariate calculus (MA 26100), and linear algebra & differential equations, MA 26200 or (MA 26500 & 26600), or equivalent 8-10 Sophomore Science selective. Must take PHYS 24100, 27200 or equivalent. 3-4 Statistics selective: One of the following: IDE 49500*, IE 23000, CHE 32000, STAT 35000, STAT 51100 or equivalent. The engineering courses (IDE 49500, IE 23000, IE 33000, or CHE 32000) count towards the required 45 credits in engineering. If used, STAT 35000 or 51000 count towards the Area requirements and help fill the accreditation requirement for Math and basic sciences. * IDE 49500 is normal course. (3 counted elsewhere) Accreditation Requirement for Mathematics and Basic Sciences: There must be a minimum of 30 credits of mathematics and basic sciences (biological, chemical and physical). Students who take MA 16500, 16600, 26100, 26200, CHM 11500, CHM11600, PHYS 17200, and PHYS 24100 meet this requirement with 31 credits. Students who take this sequence with CS 15900 (3 cr, which counts in the FYE program) in the first year instead of CHM 11600 are 3 credits short. Students in the Acoustical Engineering concentration should strongly consider taking SLHS 30200, Acoustics Bases of Speech & Hearing (3 cr.). An alternative is to take a 3 credit science or mathematics or statistics course. Credits are counted either in FYE program or in non-engineering area electives. Engineering: Minimum 45* credits at 200+ levels, of which at least 18 credits are at 300+ levels and 6 credits of the 18 must be at 400+ level. Maximum number of credits in any engineering discipline is 24. Note: It is the student s responsibility to see that all prerequisites are met. *With prior approval from the Director of the Multidisciplinary Engineering program and the professor teaching THTR 59700, 3 credits of THTR 59700 may substitute for 3 credits of engineering.
Required Engineering Core: (Can substitute or transfer equivalent courses except for IDE 30100 and major design experience courses, which must be taken at Purdue-West Lafayette.) A minimum of 15 credits of engineering at the 200+ level must be taken at Purdue-West Lafayette. Topic: Example Courses: Credits Electrical circuits ECE 20100 or equivalent 3 Statics and Dynamics* (ME 27000 + 27400), AAE 20300, (CE 29700 + 29800) or equiv. 3/6 Fluid mechanics* ME 30900 (1 cr. counts as lab), CE 34000, AAE 33300, CHE 37700 (1 cr. Counts as lab) or equivalent 3 Thermodynamics ME 20000, ABE 21000, CHE 21100 or equivalent 3 or 4 Engineering Economics IE 34300 or equivalent 3 Major design experience EPCS 41100 + 41200, IDE 48500, or other approved major design experience courses [e.g., ECE 40020 + IDE 48700 or THTR 59700 + IDE 48700] 3 or 4 Professional Preparation IDE 30100 1 Typical Engineering Core total credits 19-23 Most common core 22 *Most fluids courses require a statics/dynamics prerequisite. The recommended sequences are: CE 29700+CE 29800+CE 34000+CE 34300 9 cr core + 1 cr lab ME 27000 + ME 27400 + ME 30900 9 cr core + 1 cr lab AAE 20300 + AAE 33300 + AAE 33301 6 cr core + 1 cr lab Students who plan to earn a minor in mechanical engineering should take the ME sequence. Some mixing of courses is allowed because courses are considered to be equivalent (for example, ME 27000 + CE 29800 +CE 34000 + CE 34300), but students should discuss other sequences with an advisor first. Engineering Selectives: Do parts a, b, and c. a. Three additional credits of engineering design. In this POS take either ECE 40020 (cannot be used both as major design experience and as design selective) or ME 41300. Should be completed before senior major design experience. (3 counted elsewhere) b. Three credits of hands-on (not computer) laboratory. At least 2 credits must be in engineering (Example courses: AAE 20401, AAE 33301, AAE 35201, AAE 36401, BME 20600, ECE 20700, ECE 20800, ECE 32300, CE 34300, CE 34400, and the following count for 1 credit each: ABE 30500, ECE 27000, CE 35200, CE 35300, CHE 37700, CHE 37800, ME 30900, MSE 23500, MSE 33500, MSE 36700, NUCL 20500). One credit of hands-on lab (not computer) may be in other disciplines (e.g., science, THTR, AD) but courses cannot be one of the required courses in the First Year Engineering Program. (Note: Since CHM 11600 or BIOL 11000 may be used as a science selective for students in FYE, it satisfies the requirement of one credit of lab, but the credit cannot be double counted.) Only the credits assigned to lab can be included in this category.1 cr. lab (may be counted elsewhere) + 2 engr lab Note: The lecture credits of engineering courses with 1 or 2 credits of lab can be included in engineering electives, and the lecture credit for courses in other disciplines can be in area.
c. Engineering course in materials or strength of materials. (Example courses: MSE 23000, NUCL 27300, AAE 20400, ABE 30500, CE 23100, CE 33300, CHE 33000, or ME 32300). 3 Most commonly taken materials or strength of materials courses, respectively. NUCL 27300 is required for the Vibrational option. Total credits engineering selectives: 8 engr + 1 cr lab Area Required Selective in Area: CAD Course such as: CGT 11000, 16300, 16400; THTR 55400. 3 or 2 Sound System Engineering Option If possible students in this option are expected to earn an ECE minor, which has a GPA requirement. In selecting engineering area electives and selectives, remember that of the 45 credits of engineering at the 200+ levels, 18 credits must be at 300+ levels, of which at least 6 credits must be at the 400+ level.
