Documentation and Data Analysis Final Reports Findings Texas has more than four times the national average of aviation jobs Possible shortage of pilots and aircraft mechanics forecasted for both the state and region Few collegiate programs in the state are AABI certified Many regional aviation employers establish a need for additional workforce Literature Review Employment Data Library of Employers Aviation Academic Programs Gap Analysis 9
Existing Regional 2 year Programs Tarrant County College Northwest Campus (Fort Worth) AAS - Aviation Maintenance Technology Certificate Program Aircraft Electronics Line Maintenance Aircraft Maintenance Technology - Airframe Aircraft Maintenance Technology - Powerplant 10
Existing Regional 2 year Programs Dallas County Community College Mountain View Campus (SW Dallas) Paris Junior College AAS - Aircraft Maintenance Technology AAS - Aviation Technology Options: Aircraft Dispatcher Professional Pilot Airport Management Certificate Program Aircraft Dispatcher PCATD at MVC 11
New Four Year Program University of North Texas Denton Campus B.S. in Aviation Logistics Two Focus Areas: Analysis (aviation systems mgmt) Control (flight operations) Potential Future Focus Areas: Public Administration Engineering Meteorology Aerospace Medicine 12
Documentation and Data Analysis Gap Analysis Findings Regional deficiencies in the following areas: Aircraft Mechanics and Service Technicians Avionics Technicians Airline Pilots, Copilots, and Flight Engineers ATC Personnel and Dispatcher deficiencies o Smaller total number o Graduates of the FAA academy are dispatched to locations where staffing replacements are required o Surge of rehires after 1981 strike now approaching the mandatory retirement age of 58 Data Source: Texas Workforce Commission Employment Data projected from 2006-2016 13
Curriculum and Coordination Findings: Final Reports Recommended Curriculum Program Coordination Strategic Business Plan Aviation management, aviation flight, and aviation maintenance/technology management programs needed Curriculum reviewed for out-of-state schools ; Arizona State University, Purdue University, and the University of Louisiana, Monroe etc. Meant to be building blocks for a regional program - not intended to be reinvented Programs should be accredited by Aviation Accreditation Board International (AABI) 14
Program Coordination Create an integrated aviation education program serving the region and building on the strengths of existing programs Structure the education program to meet the needs of the students: accessible, affordable, and results-oriented Texas Higher Education Coordinating Board (THECB) allows institutions to enter into joint partnership agreements to develop degree programs and share faculty and facilities Examples of programmatic partnerships include: Joint Degree Program Cooperative Degree Program Research Partnerships Joint Faculty Appointments 15
Outreach Materials Final Reports Focus Group Findings Public Outreach Plan Aviation Career Paths Military Outreach Primary & Secondary School Outreach 16
Outreach Recommendations Brochures should be developed for potential students and aviation industry recruitment News releases, special features for print and broadcast, opinion page articles, and targeted publications and news websites Billboards, bus stop signage, bus wraps Posters for display at key locations General aviation airports Flight training schools Websites Internet Sites etc. 17
Use of Social Media and Internet Use of internet is a heavy component and should be used for all outreach Online updates and resources Interactive career pathways Course offerings and degree programs Presently around 70% of Twitter users are using it for business purposes 18
Primary and Secondary School Integration Most Integrated Integration of Existing Aviation Material into Class Curriculum Dual Credit Programs STEM Functions Electives Independent studies After School Programs Flight Simulator Experimentation E6-B Weather Source: www.capmembers.com/aerospace_education/ Least Integrated Extracurricular Activities and Programs ACE Academies Civil Air Patrol Summer institutes/camps Career expos Community events 19
