ISO 9000:2000 Standards The ISO 9000:2000 Standards together form a set of guidelines for implementing and operating an effective and efficient Quality Management System. Definitions A requirement standard is a standard to which your organization must conform to be certified. A guideline standard is a set of recommendations concerning the establishment of an effective and efficient Quality Management System. Note: ISO 9000:2000 describes fundamentals of the Quality Management System and specifies the terminology. Requirement standard, vocabulary, and guidelines 2 The table below describes the requirement standard, vocabulary, and guidelines of the basic ISO 9000 series. Type of Name of Standard Standard Description Requirement ISO 9001:2000 The ISO 9001:2000 Standard Standard contains Quality Management System requirements. This is the only ISO 9000 series Standard against which your Quality Management System can be certified. Note: ISO 9002 and ISO 9003 have been eliminated. Vocabulary ISO 9000:2000 This standard contains Quality Management System fundamentals and vocabulary. Guidelines ISO 9004:2000 This standard contains the Quality Management System guidelines for performance improvement. Continued on next page

Time to complete The typical certification process may last from six to twelve months. Factors affecting completion The amount of time it takes to complete the certification process can depend on several factors, such as commitment of management complexity and size of the organization project management skills of the project team documentation skills of the project team number and complexity of existing processes, and amount and adequacy of existing documentation. Stages in the process The table below describes the stages of the typical certification process. Stage Name What Happens? 1 Strategic Management Planning displays strong commitment and support for the certification effort forms a project team establishes a timeline assesses training needs regarding ISO 9001:2000 and organizational background, and selects a registrar. CH01_pp.001-008 15/08/01 12.15 pm Page 6 Overview of the Certification Process, Continued Stages in the process (continued) Stage Name What Happens? 2 Gap Analysis Corrective action teams evaluate the existing Quality Management System and documentation against the requirement, and effective implementation of the Quality Management System. 3 Corrective Corrective action teams institute Action changes in the Quality Management System as identified in Stage 2. 4 Documentation Corrective action teams and Records implement a document structure and control system institute a control of the records process revise documents as necessary, and provide training for changes, additions, and other topics as identified in Stage 1. 5 Implementation Management implements and monitors all changes in the Quality Management System ensures all gaps identified in Stage 2 are closed, and maintains records of all changes. 6 Pre-Certification Pre-certification auditor ensures all Audit process controls and documentation are effectively implemented according to the requirement. 7 Registrar Registrar reviews the Quality Documentation Manual, and any other requested Review documents, as the advance organizer of the certification audit. 6 Continued on next page
