Comparison of DBI Products and BMC SmartDBA Feature Brother-Panther SmartDBA Notes Streamlined performance workflow Identify configuration changes that lead to performance issues Brother-Panther will start the user off with the performance status of all their databases and allow them to drill into problem areas and identify and fix performance issues. to identify changes to databases and servers that have lead to performance issues. Diagnose and resolve space management performance problems diagnose and resolve space related performance problems. Online reorganization Diagnose and resolve SQL execution performance problems support online reorganizations. diagnose and resolve SQL execution performance problems. SQL Equalization use the patented SQL equalization method for analyzing SQL performance. Explain SQL SELECT statements explain and graphically display SQL execution plans. Generate SQL rewrites generate alternative SQL rewrites for Oracle that improve performance. Physical database design analysis Real-time database performance monitoring Identify and terminate blocking/runaway sessions x Brother-Panther will leverage the Oracle and DB2 design advisor to provide physical design recommendations to improve performance. allow the user to monitor the performance of a database in realtime. x Brother-Panther will streamline the process of identifying and terminating blocking or runaway sessions. This will continue to be part of the real-time database

Feature Brother-Panther SmartDBA Notes performance monitoring component. E-mail alert notification allow users to be alerted of performance issues via e-mail. User customizable performance alert thresholds allow users to customize performance alert thresholds. Expert performance advice x Brother-Panther will enhance the expert advice provided to the user. Performance trend reports Brother-Panther will add a set of canned performance trend reports. User developed performance reports Auto-generated schedulable resolution scripts Space performance data Static and dynamic SQL performance data Configuration data Autonomic performance data Centralized performance data repository x Brother-Panther will allow customers to create their own reports against the central performance repository. Brother-Panther will generate standard scripts that can be scheduled and executed within a customer s preferred job management and change control systems. collect space related performance statistics necessary to efficiently and effectively diagnose space performance issues. collect SQL execution performance statistics necessary to efficiently and effectively diagnose SQL performance issues. to collect system and database configuration information to efficiently and effectively identify environment changes that may have caused performance issues. to collect more or less performance statistics based on performance thresholds and trends. x Brother-Panther will use a central performance data repository for both DB2 and Oracle. In addition, it will contain logical data model that can

Feature Brother-Panther SmartDBA Notes be accessed by the customer directly for their own reporting needs. Fault-tolerant Brother-Panther will be selfdiagnosing and fault-tolerant to network and database outages. Collectors will cache their collected data if the repository goes down and will automatically load the cached data when it becomes available again. Collectors can be disabled when databases are brought down for routine maintenance. Execute native SQL statements interactively Simplified install and configuration allow users to execute ad-hoc native SQL statements interactively. Brother-Panther will simplify the install and configuration of the solution to reduce or eliminate systemic problems encountered by SmartDBA. New licensing mechanism x Brother-Panther will provide a new database server based licensing mechanism.

Target Environments Q60: What Target Environments will be supported by the DBI Products? A60: Brother-Panther will be available for the following database server environments: OS Architecture Oracle 9i & UDB 8.1 & 9 Comments 10g Windows P x86 (32 bit) Pro Windows x86 (32 bit) Server 2003 IBM AI 5.3 32/64 bit IBM AI 5.2 32/64 bit Solaris 10 32/64 bit Solaris 9 32/64 bit RedHat Linux x86 (32 bit) 3.0 RedHat Linux x86 (32 bit) 4.0 HP-U 11.11 32/64 bit To be determined.

Obsolete Functionality Q70: When I migrate to the DBI Products, what functionality is removed? And why? A70: DBI carefully evaluated all of the features and functions of SmartDBA when creating the replacement products Brother-Eagle and Brother-Panther. Some functions were removed because they were made obsolete by native functionality provided by the database itself. Removed Features and Functions Include: DBA Cockpit is removed. This is redundant with IBM Control Centre. Overflow Row Repair is removed because DB2 REORG INPLACE provides a better solution. View/edit database and database manager parameters. These changes should be under some kind of customer change management control. As part of the performance resolution process, the replacement product will make prescribed parameter changes (and physical design changes) under DBA control. Job Management use customer job management and change control systems. Mission critical environments are locked down and have strict change control processes and procedures in place that must be adhered to by applications vendors.
