With mounting business pressures, rapid deployment of new applications, and massive growth in data volume, it s no longer a matter of storing more. Instead, organizations will need to find ways to store more intelligently.

With annual data growth rates of 50 to 60 percent, the amount of information stored in organizations today has reached epic proportions. And there s no slowdown in sight. With growing user populations and the implementation of newer and bigger applications, organizations will soon need to be prepared to handle exabytes of information. External Storage PB Shipped (Source: IDC) 20,000 PB 19,161 15,000 PB 15,000 PB 56% CAGR 12,283 7,873 5,000 PB 840 1,295 2,075 3,235 5,047 0 PB 2003 2004 2005 2006 2007 2008 2009 2010 The growth in data volume isn t the only challenge facing businesses. To stay competitive and agile, organizations are focused on creating process efficiencies, while reducing both operational and energy costs. Production Unfortunately, traditional approaches to storage will not work in this new reality. With mounting business One size fits all pressures, rapid deployment of new applications, and massive growth in data volume, it s no longer a matter of storing more. Instead, organizations will need to find ways to store more intelligently. Tiered storage How to Store More Intelligently 1: Classify data and deploy tiered storage Active Archive 2: Create an active archive 3: Reduce/eliminate redundant data 4: Accelerate backup and recovery 5: Use space-saving snapshots to reduce capacity requirements 6: Deploy server and file virtualization 3

EMC provides the keys to storing more intelligently. Storing more intelligently involves more than a single solution. It requires a better approach to information management and can be accomplished by implementing several key initiatives. Through years of experience, EMC has identified six key areas that can help you store more intelligently. What s more, EMC provides the software, systems, security, and services needed to develop a smarter approach to storage that is effective, cost-efficient, and easy to use and also provides the flexibility needed to scale as you grow. 1. Classify data and deploy tiered storage Not all data is created equal. In fact, each byte of data used in your organization varies in terms of how often it s accessed and how quickly it must be recovered in the event of downtime. Therefore, it s vital to begin the journey toward storing more intelligently by classifying data based on access requirements. As soon as you begin assessing your data, you ll find that a one size fits all approach to storing data no longer makes sense. Rather, deploying tiered storage provides the needed framework and processes to maintain information on the right storage type at the right time, thereby aligning capabilities to 20,000 PB 19,161 requirements and ultimately lowering total cost of ownership (TCO). EMC offers a range of 15,000 scalable, PB easy-to-use storage platforms, software, and services to help organizations like yours classify data and establish a tiered storage 12,283 infrastructure. Our portfolio includes EMC Symmetrix, EMC CLARiiON, and EMC Celerra. All EMC storage platforms can be deployed with a 15,000 PB combination of high-performance and low-cost/high-capacity 7,873 disk drives within the same array, and offer feature-rich software functionality to simplify movement, 5,047 management, and protection of valuable data. So, whether your organization 5,000 PB requires a small-scale 3,235 solution with tiered storage deployed within one 2,075 physical system, or has a large-scale 840 environment 1,295 where multiple tiers of storage systems are needed, the ultimate benefit is the same lower 0 PB TCO. 2003 2004 2005 2006 2007 2008 2009 2010 56% CAGR Before After Production One size fits all Tiered storage By classifying data and deploying tiered storage, organizations typically see a 25 percent improvement in TCO. EMC leads the IP storage market. The widespread adoption of IP storage iscsi and NAS technology to access storage systems has created the opportunity for organizations of all sizes to cost-effectively build and maintain efficient, reliable storage networks. Organizations can now leverage existing IP technology and IP-trained staff to deploy and maintain their storage networks. In essence, today s sophisticated IP-based storage technology offers methods to achieve storage consolidation results far more simply and affordably. EMC is the market leader in IP storage. According to IDC research, between EMC and its wide network of Velocity 2 Partners, no other provider has deployed more IP-based storage solutions. That s because EMC offers a wide range of flexible options to bring cost-effective, simple IP storage to organizations of all sizes whether they are deploying an initial networked storage system or consolidating servers and applications not on their current SANs. EMC Celerra NS Series: The industry-leading IP storage platform. >> No-compromise availability: provides integrated advanced EMC CLARiiON CX3 UltraScale Series: The proven midrange storage solution. >> Five 9s availability: offers unique high availability and data integrity features >> Price/performance: provides the best performance and price/ performance in midrange storage >> mobility: enables nondisruptive in-the-box mobility and heterogeneous data migrations >> Best economics: remains the most economical midrange platform throughout the entire lifecycle >> Ease of use: simplifies installation, management, and scalability for customers and partners EMC Symmetrix DMX: The world s most trusted storage platform. >> Information availability: remains the most advanced and widely deployed business continuity platform >> Tiered storage consolidation: allows you to save money through in-the-box tiering >> Performance: supports the world s most demanding application workloads >> Application integration and qualification: provides deeper integration with applications and ISVs >> Power efficiency: offers the best power and cooling efficiency for today s data center requirements >> Information-centric security, built in: delivers advanced security and integrated RSA technology clustering, managed as a single device >> Advanced functionality at no extra cost: remains the most comprehensive suite of built-in features >> Price/performance leadership: remains the established price/performance leader across the full line of integrated and gateway IP platforms >> Up to 30 times file system performance: combines file serving via a patented Multi-Path File System with Fibre Channel/iSCSI to accelerate performance >> Advanced information lifecycle management (ILM) for IP storage: provides full integration with EMC s newest technologies, simplifying information management throughout its lifecycle 5

2. Create an active archive When information is needed, it must be online and readily accessible whether it s required daily or to meet longer-term audit cycles. Active archiving gives you 20,000 the PB ability to move data that is used infrequently 19,161 from primary storage into a more cost-effective storage 15,000 PB infrastructure while still allowing quick and easy access. 12,283 15,000 PB 56% CAGR 7,873 EMC Centera is the first active archive solution on the 5,047 market 5,000 PBthat is purpose-built for storage and retrieval 3,235 of fixed content. By 2,075 migrating static or infrequently 840 1,295 accessed information from the production storage 0 PB 2003 2004 2005 2006 2007 2008 2009 2010 environment to an EMC Centera active archive, valuable production storage space is freed up and backup media requirements lessen as static content is removed from daily or weekly backup processes. For compliance purposes, EMC Centera also offers guaranteed content authenticity to meet the emerging Production set of regulatory requirements. One size fits all Before Tiered storage After Active Archive In many e-mail or file system environments, greater than 75 percent of the data is not modified, which makes it an ideal candidate for active archive. EMC Centera: The most simple, affordable, and secure archiving platform. >> Assured authenticity and online access: provides speed of disk with the authenticity of optical storage at the price of tape >> Single-instance storage: retains only one copy of information no matter how many times it is requested to be stored >> Self-configuring, self-healing, and self-managing: enables administrators to manage up to 50 times more content >> A future-proof investment: eliminates the impacts of technology obsolescence >> Simple scalability: provides the ability to seamlessly add capacity without disruption >> Lowest TCO: is more cost-effective than tape or optical storage Clones

15,000 PB 56% CAGR 12,283 7,873 5,000 PB 840 1,295 2,075 3,235 5,047 0 PB 2003 2004 2005 2006 2007 2008 2009 2010 3. Reduce/eliminate redundant data One of the key drivers impacting storage costs is the amount of production data that needs to be stored and backed up. Reducing or eliminating duplicate data in backup environments is a key step to storing more intelligently. Consider a simple example: an e-mail attachment is distributed and then saved by 20 different users. The impact? Storage capacity, network Production bandwidth, and backup media are unnecessarily consumed by a factor of 20. With data de-duplication, storage requirements lessen, operations are streamlined, backup times are shortened, and overall TCO is improved. One size fits all Tiered storage EMC technology proactively helps to reduce or eliminate the amount of redundant data that an organization creates, stores, and ultimately backs up. EMC Centera computes a content address every time an object is requested to be stored. For example, when two or more people try to store the same e-mail attachment, EMC Centera computes the same content address each time. Tier With 1 this intelligence, EMC Centera easily determines that multiple people are trying to store the same file and gives each user a pointer to the file instead of storing multiple copies. This minimizes information redundancy and the amount of storage required. EMC Avamar backup and recovery software can achieve the same results for your backup data. EMC Avamar leverages global de-duplication technology to eliminate the unnecessary transmission of redundant backup data over the network and saved to secondary storage. By de-duplicating across sites and servers, you can dramatically shrink the amount of time required for backups, network utilization, and the growth of secondary storage. Active Archive Before After EMC Avamar realizes up to 300 times reduction in daily backup data and up to 10 times faster backups. Clones EMC Avamar: Game-changing next-generation backup and recovery. >> Global de-duplication at the source: reduces daily backup data up to 300 times and accelerates backups up to 10 times >> Centralized management: centrally manages all remote backups from a single pane of glass >> VMware backup: provides fast VMware Consolidated (VCB) and Virtual Machine backups with reduced hardware resource impact >> Rapid restore from disk: offers single-step restore for full backups, directories, or files no need to restore last good full, plus incrementals >> High availability features: includes RAIN (Redundant Array of Independent Nodes) and replication to ensure no single points of failure 7

15,000 PB 56% C 7,873 5,000 PB 840 1,295 2,075 3,235 5,047 4. Speed backup and recovery 0 PB 2003 2004 2005 2006 2007 2008 2009 2010 By extending the tiered storage methodology to backup/recovery operations, organizations can dramatically improve the speed and reliability of their backup and recovery processes. For example, disk-based solutions deliver five-fold improvement in backup and recovery times compared with tape-based solutions. Production EMC offers a complete solution for backup-to-disk needs, Tier including 2 assessment services, backup software applications, and a wide range of LAN-based, SAN-based, and virtual tape library (VTL) solutions so you can realize better performance and reliability in your backup and recovery environment no matter how you manage your backups today. One size fits all Tiered storage All EMC storage platforms can be deployed with low-cost/high-capacity disk drive technologies that are ideal for backup-to-disk applications. In addition to the flexibility of leveraging EMC storage platforms for backup-to-disk, EMC also offers the EMC Disk Library. The EMC Disk Library is a simple-to-deploy and easy-to-use, disk-based backup and recovery solution that emulates leading open systems tape libraries. And because the Disk Library looks like tape to the backup application, it offers immediate compatibility with existing backup applications, as well as a quick and simple deployment. Before After Active Archive Disk-based solutions provide a 5x improvement in backup/ recovery times. EMC Disk Library: The easiest way to improve backup and restore. Clones >> Industry-leading open systems disk library: more than 112 PBs deployed across 900+ companies worldwide >> Most qualified backup environment: boasts more than three million supported configurations >> The first disk library with consolidated media management: includes EMC NetWorker and Symantec Net functions performed within EMC Disk Library >> Highest performance and most scalable system: remains the industry s highest-performing VTL system and is the first 1.8 petabyte disk library

e Archive 5. Use space-saving snapshots to reduce capacity requirements Creating full copies of production data has been a common practice to assist with backup, recovery, and testing of application environments. As information continues to grow, the storage requirements and costs associated with this practice have escalated, as have the capacity requirements to support local replication activities. Today, the use of space-saving snapshots provides a much smarter, more affordable alternative for protecting and re-purposing production data. Specifically, the space-saving characteristics of logical snapshot copies allow organizations to more quickly and effectively leverage replication capabilities while minimizing the traditional costs and capacity requirements that go along with them. All EMC storage platforms offer the flexibility to deploy array-based full copy clone and local snapshot replication you can choose which to leverage based on your application requirements and use cases. In addition, both types are supported and integrated with key applications, such as Microsoft Exchange, SQL Server, Oracle, and SAP. Before After Clones hots provide up to 10 times reduction in capacity required for local replication. 9

6. Deploy server and file virtualization IT departments today face a number of challenges in their physical server infrastructures, beginning with underutilization and server sprawl. According to IDC, a typical x86 server deployment uses only 10 to 15 percent of its total capacity, and yet organizations spend considerable resources provisioning, maintaining, and securing growing numbers of physical servers. For every $1 spent on new servers, again according to IDC, $8 is spent in ongoing management. Organizations can overcome these challenges and implement significant efficiencies by using virtualization to optimize the infrastructure at the server level. Virtualization with VMware offers a fundamentally simpler and more efficient way to manage server infrastructures. In fact, the time to provision a new server can be decreased by up to 70 percent, new applications can be provisioned in minutes, and time previously spent on manual, time-consuming tasks can be redirected toward strategic initiatives. What s more, data center capacity can be scaled nondisruptively and availability can be ensured for all applications at a reasonable cost. When you combine VMware server virtualization with EMC Rainfinity Global File Virtualization you get the added benefits of virtualizing your unstructured data environments. The Global File Virtualization capabilities allow you to simplify management, move data non-disruptively, address performance bottlenecks, and lower TCO by maximizing utilization in heterogeneous NAS, CAS, and file server environments. Storing more intelligently in VMware environments. EMC storage platforms offer the most flexible deployment options for VMware environments including support for FC, iscsi, and NAS protocols and support for advanced VMware features, such as Dynamic Resource Scheduler, Consolidated (VCB), and High Availability configurations. EMC Avamar software de-duplicates backup data within virtual machines and also supports VCB. With Avamar, the amount of data backed up is greatly reduced which lowers the impact on hardware resources and dramatically increases backup performance for virtual machine environments. Various replication options server, array, and network for VMware are also available from EMC to meet specific recovery and budget requirements. And, EMC backs its entire portfolio with fully tested and supported solutions; planning, building, and managing services; and an extensive library of case studies, white papers, and best practices to expedite your initiatives.

Addressing your key priorities At EMC, we re focused on the things that are most important to you, such as making sure your information is easy to manage, taking the right steps to conserve energy, and protecting your valuable information from security threats and breaches. EMC solutions simplify storage management. EMC has invested heavily in developing new and improved tools that meet user requirements to streamline storage management and improve ease of use across all platforms. These capabilities help simplify: >> Installations >> Device management and configuration changes >> Performance tuning >> mobility >> Support >> Upgrades and service options EMC solutions can be deployed quickly, and are easy to use and manage. For example, Symmetrix Management Console, Celerra Manager, and CLARiiON Navisphere Manager all allow users to configure and provision a terabyte of storage in less than one minute. And EMC Centera includes self-configuring, self-healing, and self-managing capabilities that enable an administrator to manage up to 50 times greater quantity of content. Energy-efficient solutions improve cost management. Today s data centers face critical energy issues power and cooling limitations, high energy demands and costs, and even outages from overburdened power grids. Advanced tools and services from EMC help optimize energy efficiency in your data center. For example, EMC storage platforms consume less energy per terabyte than alternative solutions, while the EMC Power Calculator enables EMC experts to advise on ways to reduce power and cooling costs through more efficient data management. Powerful EMC virtualization solutions, such as VMware, can help you consolidate servers to increase capacity utilization and eliminate unnecessary infrastructure. And finally, EMC Energy Efficiency Services can help you make your data center as power efficient as possible. Continue to look to EMC for further innovations resulting from our investment in research and development programs aimed at reducing your energy and cooling costs. Storage solutions with security built-in. Most organizations readily agree that information is their most important asset. In fact, in 2006 organizations spent $45B on security products; however studies show that only one in five feel protected. At EMC, we ve taken an information-centric approach by building security into our products, not bolting it on. This strategic approach provides our customers with improved access control, a more secure infrastructure, and expanded compliance and auditability so that their information infrastructure is guarded from security threats. 11

Take the Next Step With its flexible and cost-effective storage consolidation solutions, EMC provides organizations with the information management framework they need to store more intelligently. But storage is only part of what we do. Our focus is on improving your business from the ground up. As such, we help organizations like yours with solutions focused on: >> Establishing backup, recovery, and archive operations >> Ensuring effective and affordable information protection >> Virtualizing information infrastructure >> Automating data center operations >> Securing critical assets >> Leveraging content for competitive advantage >> Accelerating business value for business-critical applications, such as Microsoft Exchange, SQL Server, Oracle, and SAP.
