KATHERINE WDOWIAK MEMORIAL AWARD This award was established in honour of the late Katherine Wdowiak who made tremendous contributions to nursing and health care to improve the health of all Nova Scotians. Ms. Wdowiak was a valued member of the Xaverian Family through her work as an Educational Consultant in the Certificate in Continuing Care Distance Nursing Program. Students embraced her warm, supportive approach to learning, as well as her ability to facilitate the integration of new information into the experiential knowledge base of practicing nurses. Throughout her professional nursing career, Ms. Wdowiak held many nursing leadership positions including Community Health Liaison, Supervisor of Community Health (Atlantic Unit), and Supervisor of Nursing, Home Care Nova Scotia. She was a strong advocate for nurses and encouraged nurses in all practice settings to continue to develop professionally through the attainment of new skills and higher education. Ms. Wdowiak was an active community citizen and a valued participant on many community committees. She received recognition on several occasions from a variety of organizations for outstanding community involvement and participation in community development initiatives. Applicants for this award will be evaluated on the following criteria: Community Involvement Academic Ability Cooperative Attitude Commitment to Continuing Education While academic ability must be demonstrated, it is the candidate s involvement in the community that is most influential in determining the awarding of this scholarship. Through a personal statement, the student must demonstrate active participation at the community level, such as involvement in community action groups, volunteering (e.g., committee work, athletic groups, community activities), coordinating community health services, and/or by contributing in some way to the enhancement of the cultural and spiritual value of the community. Two awards will be presented annually to two students enrolled in a StFX Post RN Distance Nursing Program (i.e., BScN, Certificate in Gerontology, or Certificate in Continuing Care) and who have completed a minimum of one year of studies. The award monies will be forwarded to the Business Office at St. Francis Xavier University to be applied to the students account to offset tuition. The deadline for applications is February 28 th.
