Everyville 2008 Community beyond Place, Civic Sense beyond Architecture online competition 1. COMPETITION ORGANISATION AND MANAGEMENT Fondazione La Biennale di Venezia, settori Arti e Architettura Palazzo Giustinian Lolin, San Vidal, San Marco 2893-30124 Venice tel: +39.(0)41.5218711, fax: +39.(0)41.5218812 website: http:// everyville.labiennale.org competition management: everyville@labiennale.org 2. OBJECTIVE OF THE COMPETITION The Fondazione La Biennale di Venezia believes strongly in the younger generation, in its creative talents and the force of its ideas. Throughout the years this conviction has been translated into dedicated initiatives and projects. In occasion of the 11 th International Venice Biennale of Architecture (Venice, September 14 November 23) this conviction is represented by Everyville, an exceptional opportunity for University Students from around the world to be directly involved in the organisation of the Biennale. The competition calls for the preparation of an idea-project based on the theoretical-critical text written by the curator of the 11 th Exhibition Aaron Betsky. However, this time the element of challenge and stimulation lies in the fact that the works selected by the prestigious Jury will become an integral part of the 11 th Exhibition, presented in a dedicated section. The competition thus represents a unique opportunity and unrepeatable occasion to present your work, coupled with the satisfaction of presenting it during what is now considered to be the most important architectural exhibition in the world. 3. CONDITIONS The single phase competition is open to students of all disciplines and from any university in the world who have not graduated at the time of 1 st January 2008, as well as to graduates of any discipline that in the course of 2008 are enrolled students in post-graduate studies such as specialization, master s degree, PhD, etc., and whose attendance may be certified. Participants can be individuals or groups. Interdisciplinary and multicultural groups are encouraged. The ownership of the idea-project is recognized in equal measure to all members of eventual groups. Each participant or group can prepare and submit only one project and participants my be part of more than one group. 4. EXCLUSIONS AND INCOMPATIBLES All submissions (images and text) must be anonymous and respect the technical specifications outlined in this document. Failure to respect this clause will result in the disqualification of the submission. The Jury may decide to excluded any participant based on the deformity of the material

presented with respect to the indications contained in this brief or in light of evidence that may compromise the anonymity of the submission. The following are not eligible to participate in the competition: - employees of the Biennale di Venezia, Telecom Italia, Domus, and Newitalianblood.com; - those who have collaborated in the preparation of the competition; - spouses, parents and relatives of Jury members, including third-degree relations; - those with ongoing professional/personal relationships with the members of the Jury. 5. REGISTRATION AND FREE ADMISSION TO THE 11 th INTERNATIONAL VENICE BIENNALE OF ARCHITECTURE Participants must complete the online registration process by 10:00 AM on July 1, 2008, by filling out, in all of its parts, the form found at http://everyville. labiennale.org, indicating the following: name of the group, followed by the name first and last, address, taxpayer s code number (or equivalent), email, date of birth and telephone number of each member of the group. The payment of the 10 (ten) Euro inscription fee can be made using a credit card or debit card (Visa, MasterCard, American Express) directly to the online account of the Venice Biennale. If the group is composed of only one student, the cost of inscription is 10 (ten) Euro; if the group is composed of 2 students, the cost is 20 (twenty) Euro; if the group is composed of three students, the cost is 30 (thirty) Euro; this formula is repeated up to a maximum of 10 participants per group. Following the correct completion of the online registration process, the system will automatically forward each member of the group an email with a USER ID and PASSWORD, to be used to complete the online payment and the successive online submission of the project images. Following the successful completion of the online payment, the system will forward each member of the group a receipt of payment. No other form of registration is possible and it is not possible to modify completed registrations, or to eliminate or add group members. All participants who present themselves at the Biennale ticket offices with the receipt of payment and valid identification will be granted free admission to the 11 th International Architecture Biennale. 6. REQUESTED MATERIAL AND SUBMISSION INSTRUCTIONS Participants must submit 2 (two) images (which may include different drawings) of the idea-project in.jpg format (dimensions: 945x450 pixels, maximum size 200 kb) and a descriptive text in English (maximum length:

2000 characters). The material is to be submitted by the participants according to the instructions published in two online pages, according to the instructions that can be easily followed by anyone with a minimum knowledge of email and internet. The images and text must clearly outline the concept, strategy and design necessary for the understanding of the submission. - The first page must contain: a) One.jpg image (940x450 pixels, maximum sized 200 kb) that includes at least one three-dimensional image of the entire project (renderings, photomontages, photographs of models, perspectives or drawings); b) A text, in English, maximum length 1000 characters (spaces included) describing the general content of the submission. - The second page must contain: a) One.jpg image (940x450 pixels, maximum sized 200 kb) that includes at least one three-dimensional detail of the project (renderings, photomontages, photographs of models, perspectives or drawings); b) A text, in English, maximum length 1000 characters (spaces included) describing the general details of the submission. Following the completion of the self-publication of both pages, the online system will automatically forward the members of the group an email confirming the files submitted (images and text) in.pdf format. Participants may substitute previously transmitted images. The Jury will evaluate only the last images received. Images and text may not be submitted in any other form. For the self-publication of the images and text, it is sufficient to have access to an internet connection and browser, such as Mozilla Firefox (version 2.0 or higher for PC Windows and for MAC OS X) or Internet Explorer (version 6.0 or higher for PC Windows only, no MAC) or Safari (version 3.0 or higher for MAC OS X). The self-publication procedure will be active on the competition site from 10:00 AM on July 1, 2008 to 10:00 AM on July 15, 2008 (Italian time), by which time all submissions must be received in order to be eligible to participate in the competition. Given the considerable amount of time available to competitors for the activation of the aforementioned procedures and the adoption of technical actions that are ordinarily suitable and sufficient, the Biennale di Venezia declines any and all responsibility for failure to access the system and/ or failure to activate the online procedures within the allotted time frame, resulting from technical difficulties faced by participants and/or deriving from

the system, which are beyond the organiser s control, such as, for example, difficulties in connecting to the system resulting from participant s use of unsuitable systems or systems used inappropriately, temporary congestion of the internet network and/or connections to the online system, natural catastrophes or human actions that may affect the competition management system, etc. 7. ANONYMITY OF THE SUBMISSIONS The online system associates an individual and random 8-digit numerical code to each submission received. Not even the author of the submissions will be made aware of this code. Only following the completion of the Jury s assessments will the 8-digit codes be associated with the names of the submissions authors. Participants are thus reminded that all texts and images submitted must not contain any references that may compromise their anonymity. 8.
