Frank Phillips College Psychology 2301 I. General Course Information Ms. Jan Moore PSYC2301, Spring Mini-Term, 2010 Introduction to Psychology 3 Credit Hours Prerequisites: passage of reading section of appropriate placement test. Course Description: Introductory course in the principles of general psychology. Preparatory to all other courses in psychology. A series of basic intellectual competencies--reading, writing, speaking, listening, critical thinking, and computer literacy--are essential to the learning process in any discipline and thus should inform any core curriculum. Although students can be expected to come to college with some experience in exercising these competencies, they often need further instruction and practice to meet college standards and, later, to succeed in both their major field of academic study and their chosen career or profession. This course will further develop the following basic intellectual competencies: READING: Reading at the college level means the ability to analyze and interpret a variety of printed materials--books, articles, and documents. A core curriculum should offer students the opportunity to master both general methods of analyzing printed materials and specific methods for analyzing the subject matter of individual disciplines. WRITING: Competency in writing is the ability to produce clear, correct, and coherent prose adapted to purpose, occasion, and audience. Although correct grammar, spelling, and punctuation are each a sine qua non in any composition, they do not automatically ensure that the composition itself makes sense or that the writer has much of anything to say. Students need to be familiar with the writing process including how to discover a topic and how to develop and organize it, how to phrase it effectively for their audience. These abilities can be acquired only through practice and reflection. SPEAKING: Competence in speaking is the ability to communicate orally in clear, coherent, and persuasive language appropriate to purpose, occasion, and audience. Developing this competency includes acquiring poise and developing control of the language through experience in making presentations to small groups, to large groups, and through the media. LISTENING: Listening at the college level means the ability to analyze and interpret various forms of spoken communication. CRITICAL THINKING: Critical thinking embraces methods for applying both qualitative and quantitative skills analytically and creatively to subject matter in order to evaluate arguments and to construct alternative strategies. Problem solving is one of the applications of critical thinking, used to address an identified task.
COMPUTER LITERACY: Computer literacy at the college level means the ability to use computer-based technology in communicating, solving problems, and acquiring information. Core-educated students should have an understanding of the limits, problems, and possibilities associated with the use of technology, and should have the tools necessary to evaluate and learn new technologies as they become available. II. Objectives/Terminal Objectives All Frank Phillips College courses work together to meet the following objectives: 1. Establish broad and multiple perspectives on the individual in relationship to the larger society and world in which he or she lives, and to understand the responsibilities of living in a culturally and ethnically diverse world; 2. Stimulate a capacity to discuss and reflect upon individual, political, economic, and social aspects of life in order to understand ways in which to be a responsible member of society; 3. Recognize the importance of maintaining health and wellness; 4. Develop a capacity to use knowledge of how technology and science affect their lives; 5. Develop personal values for ethical behavior; 6. Develop the ability to make aesthetic judgments; 7. Use logical reasoning in problem solving; and 8. Integrate knowledge and understand the interrelationships of scholarly disciplines. All Social and Behavioral Science courses strive to meet the following Exemplary Educational Objectives as identified by the Texas Higher Education Coordinating Board: 1. Employ the appropriate methods, technologies, and data that social and behavioral scientists use to investigate the human condition; 2. Examine social institutions and processes across a range of historical periods, social structures, and cultures; 3. Use and critique alternative explanatory systems or theories; 4. Develop and communicate alternative explanations or solutions for contemporary social issues; 5. Analyze the effects of historical, social, political, economic, cultural, and global forces on the area under study; 6. Comprehend the origins and evolution of U.S. and federal systems, with a focus on the growth of political institutions, the constitutions of the U.S. federalism, civil liberties, and civil and human rights; 7. Understand the evolution and current role of the U.S. in the world; 8. Differentiate and analyze historical evidence (documentary and statistical) and differing points of view; 9. Recognize and apply reasonable criteria for the acceptability of historical evidence and social research; 10. Analyze, critically assess, and develop creative solutions to public policy problems; 11. Recognize and assume one's responsibility as a citizen in a democratic society by learning to think for oneself, by engaging in public discourse, and by obtaining
information through the news media and other appropriate information sources about politics and public policy; and 12. Identify and understand differences and commonalities within diverse cultures. In addition, the following objectives that are specific to Introduction to Psychology will be met: STUDENTS WILL BE ABLE TO: A. Define psychology and understand its study as a branch of empiricism. B. List the components of the scientific method and their application to varied research strategies. C. Describe the current theoretical perspectives concerning the central nervous system s relationship to human behavior and cognition. D. Discuss the effects of early environmental and social interactions upon subsequent human behavior. E. Identify the physiological structures of human sensory perception. F. Discuss the current theories concerning human perception. G. Identify the states of consciousness and their analogous behaviors. H. Define operant conditioning and learning. I. Name the different types of memory. J. Understand the current theoretical perspectives concerning memory, recall, and forgetting. K. Define cognition, intelligence and creativity. L. Discuss the current philosophical debate concerning the existence of intuition. M. List the physiological structures of the human body involved in motivation and emotion. N. Name and explain the past and present theories of emotion. O. List components of personality as defined by psychologists. P. Demonstrate an understanding of psychoanalytic theory. Q. Define mental health and mental illness, and explain the role of life stressors in the development of mental illness. R. List core features of disordered behavior. S. Demonstrate an awareness of the classification system of mental disorders. T. List and define the various theories of therapy for mental disorders, including, but not limited to psychoanalysis, humanistic therapies, behaviorist therapies, cognitive therapies, group therapies, and medical/pharmacological therapies. IV. Classroom Policy and Instructor Expectations Students are expected to: A. Attend class regularly; B. Bring texts and other required materials to each class meeting; C. Participate in class discussion, collaboration, and group projects; D. Read text and other readings as assigned prior to each class meeting; E. Complete all in- and out-of-class assignments; F. Take all major exams, including the final. Daily grades are not eligible for makeup. Excused late projects or tests will be penalized 10 points per class day that they are late. V. Additional/Supplemental References Students will become familiar with several sociological reference materials from the FPC LRC. In addition, handouts from the instructor should be read / completed and kept in the three-ring binder noted in the Materials portion of this syllabus, above. VI. Methods of Evaluation Students successful completion of required projects and examinations as well as participation in classroom learning activities are the basis for assessing progress toward course objectives. Daily Grade --Reading quizzes, attendance, and/or web-based exercises = 20% Learning Portfolio Project = 20% Three Periodic Examinations = 45% Final Examination = 15% VII. Attendance Requirements Students must attend class regularly in order to earn full credit for the Daily Grade portion of their semester averages. Students must attend class regularly in order to pass the exams, as the majority of the material covered will be from class notes rather than from the textbook. I am available to visit with you in my office, CLC 12-C, during regularly scheduled office hours and at other times by appointment. No makeup is possible for daily work!!! This policy is not subject to negotiation. Late learning portfolio projects will be docked ten points for each class day they are late. All periodic examinations must be taken at the scheduled times indicated on the Course Outline VIII.
