January 1999 6101 E. Paseo Cimarron Tucson, AZ 85750 e-mail rlebby@aol.com, fax: 520-529-2140, http://www.intercamp.com/northstar/ Greetings from our winter office in Tucson. Once again I have a full file of rumors, hearsay and gossip to share with you about our mostly unsuspecting alumni. Always on duty, your editor carefully collects scoops wherever there is a chance encounter with an alumni. My files are filled with scoops scribbled on napkins and sugar packets. All alumni are pumped for information on their camp friends. Sources are never double checked, however, we rarely print anything scandalous so you re relatively safe. None the less it s a good idea to send us your news directly. We admit that none of the news that will appear in this gossipy little newsletter is late breaking news. We re on a printing schedule determined by having enough material to fill four pages, therefore birth announcements etc. could be a year old, but maybe still news to you. In the woods we became boys again. ALUMNI REUNION PLANNED FOR Labor Day Weekend 2000 Sept. 1st-4th. It s been five years since our last alumni reunion at camp. There are some who think that this is just too long. Alumni have been putting pressure on us and others have actually volunteered to help. Put it on your calendar and start making plans to come. JIM SILBERMAN (circa 1950 s) once again will be our registrar. We solemnly pledge to make the weekend like the camp experience that you remember. We promise no beenie weinie or turkey tetrachloride; only endless camp stories and people whose eyes won t glaze over when you tell them. Since this will be our 2nd such event there s a good chance that we learned something the last time that will make it bigger and better than the one before. WE NEED YOUR HELP! We wouldn t want anyone to miss out on the fun. Please send us names and addresses of alumni that you have been in touch with. We need to update our data base. WE WERE THERE IN 98 Peter and Paul of Peter, Paul and Mary perform at North Star. To have Peter and Paul personally sing all of our favorite campfires songs at North Star was a highlight of our camping career. We were thrilled to help them keep their legacy alive with the next generation. It all came about with a project Robert was working on linking the group with the American Camping Assoc. The link was made and a new C.D. entitled, Around the Campfire was produced. In lieu of Robert s efforts with the project, Peter and Paul most graciously came to sing at camp. Given that this was one of the biggest events in North Star history, we invited 600 of our friends to join us. The CHERNOV S came with their girls from Birch Trail, TOM ADLER brought his girls from Chipewa Ranch Camp, as well as assorted friends, family, alumni (TOM COHEN, JIM SILBERMAN and ELLIOT SIEGEL) the local press and of course Lou and Renee. That s a lot of hamburgers but we re used to working with mass quantities of food. Our first choice of venues of course was the Council Ring but with rain always in the forecast in Northern Wisc. we were a little nervous and a huge tent was erected on the athletic field. The tent looked beautiful in the sun that came out shortly after it was put up. Oh well, the tent did give our athletic field the look of a music festival. With a professional sound system and locally made stage, it couldn t have been better. We couldn t wipe the smiles off our faces when Peter and Paul changed the words to Puff to thank Leb for his efforts. The best part of the show was when some of our own talent was invited on stage to sing with Peter and Paul. Camper JON HYMEN and Assistant Director PATTI KATZ from Chippewa Ranch Camp got the thrill of their lives. We think that Peter and Paul were equally impressed. Ah...the memories will linger on.

CHIPS OFF OF THE OLD BLOCK Lou and Renee with 2nd session, 2nd generation campers: Front row: Matt Seidler, Adam Weber, Jake Gelbort, Andrew Plonsker, Jake Brower, Danny Kahn. Back Row: Nathan Hart, Brian and Jeff Glickman, Bill Fishel, Marc Seigel, Jeff Hanauer, Jacob Segil, Michael Fishman. WE WERE THERE IN 98 Second generation campers: JUSTIN COHEN (3rd gen., Tom Cohen, Kansas City) RUBIN BERMAN (Bruce Berman, Evanston, Il.) JAKE BROWER ( Aaron Brower, Madison, WI) BILL FISHEL (Rick Fishel, San Antonio, Tx.) MICHAEL FISHMAN (Jay, Buffaloe Grove, IL.) JAKE GELBORT (Mike Gerbort, Highland Park, IL.) BRIAN and JEFF GLICKMAN (Michael, Deerfield, IL.) KEVIN GOODMAN (Larry Goodman, Houston, TX.) NATHAN HART (David Hart, Oak Park, IL.) JEFF HANAUER (Steve Hanauer, Chicago) DANNY KAHAN (Jeff Kahan, Glencoe, Il.) GARRETT LEBBY (Robert and Sue Lebby, Tucson, AZ.) TOMMY MILLSTONE (Joe Millstone, Tucson, AZ.) JONATHAN MITCHELL (Richard Mitchell, Atlanta) ANDREW PLONSKER (Richie Plonsker, Lake Forest,IL.) JACOB & DAVID SEGIL (Larry Segil, Highland Pk.,IL) MATT SEIDLER (Mike Seidler, St. Louis, MO.) MARC AND ELENA SIEGEL (Elliot, Lake Forrest, IL.) MICHAEL FISHMAN (Jay, Buffaloe Grove, IL.) NATHAN SLUTSKY (Rodney Slutsky, Highland Pk.Il.) ADAM WEBER (Jay Weber, Mobile, AL.) TEN YEAR MEN AT CAMP IN 98 STEVE HITCHENS, DON, KANDY and CHELSEA GIBSON, GARRETT and KACY LEBBY, DAN LICHTENSTEIN, DAVID MEHLMAN, SETH KATZ, BEN SHER, JIMMY SARNOFF. We need Camp Doctors for the summer of 99. Let us know if you re interested. Please help us recruit staff by sending great teachers, nurses, college students our way. Some of you may have taken a few years off to go to college. Working at camp is a great way to build core competencies that corporations are looking for when hiring. Don t underestimate the value of camp experience to a future employer. Contact Leb if you re interested in helping open camp in May. POST CAMP ALUMNI Alumni joining us for Post Camp this summer included: GARY KRETCHMER, TOM PETERMAN, MIKE GELBORT and STEVE RICHMAN. Steve Richman s family again came prepared to dominate the talent night and spread scandal. In an effort to take control of Post Camp and tarnish my husband s reputation, Steve circulated pictures of Leb with Monica Lewinsky. He didn t get far with his plan. Our team of experts determined that the photos were fakes. He s threatening to come back again next year. I think that we ll give him something productive to do like help us plan our reunion in 2000. MIKE GELBORT is Mr. Recreation at Post Camp. He pulls a trailer with a motor cycle, a tandem bike, his racing bike, and bikes for the kids and assorted other gear for skeet shooting and keeping himself occupied for the week. We d love to see more alumni at Post Camp. It you re tired of squeezing your family into those tiny hotel rooms...eating fast food...schlepping in and out of the car with the kids and the gear at beaches, parks, and crowded tourist traps, Post Camp at North Star may be the family experience you ve been looking for. We do all of the work and you have all of the fun. Each family gets their own lake side cabin. COME BE ONE OF THE GANG NG FOR POST T CAMP 99. 99. Call all our office for the details. WHAT S NEW AT CAMP? We continue to sand blast our buildings and restore them to the original log finish. People who haven t been at camp for awhile, think that we have put up new structures. We keep plugging away making improvements to the lodge. Our caretaker TOM BROKAW is a skilled carpenter so we keep him busy with renovations. He s working on tongue and groove cedar in the inner lodge ceiling and walls. Renovation has begun on J-1 and Pine cabin. My hobby is landscaping and we ve done several projects around camp. Leb terraced the front of the lodge and we are happy to say that those long announcements inside are a thing of the past. We now do announcenments lake side on the terrace with a portable mike. This has not seemed to shorten announcements but has given us a stage and a captive audience for our monologue. It s fun having your own show three times a day. Our campers are a great audience.

I HEARD IT THROUGH THE G R A P E V I N E, STRAIGHT FROM THE HORSES MOUTH AND OFTEN TIME FROM CYBERSPACE 1945-1970 In the days of Lou and Renee: Lou and Renee are doing great spending their winters in Florida. They continue to love hearing from alumni and they have a million small world camp stories. While at a wedding in L.A. they looked up to find their waiter to be former camper EVAN GORE. News from our Buffalo boy and gal: RUTH AND DENNY SHEFCYK. Denny retired from teaching and was very busy with all of his hobbies when he was diagnosed with a brain stem tumor. Denny spent 8 weeks in the hospital. The good news was that it was not malignant and his Buffalo gal took such good care of him that he s once again driving and making strides toward a full recovery. This was probably one of Denny s biggest challenges. Leb was out to see them recently in Pueblo, CO. and he said that he s doing great... PAUL SHEFCYK is living in Detroit with his wife and two boys. He is the senior sales engineer for AK Steel for the Ford Motor Company. Paul is a metalugical engineer...beth SHEFCYK is working in Fort Collins...GUY WOLF entertained us on a recent recruiting trip to L.A. Guy has a great guest house decorated to the max to look like a 50 s diner. It was better than any theme restaurant we ve seen. Guy collects memorabilia. That includes all his camp memorabilia which he had on display especially for us...on the same trip we visited with MICHAEL PLONSKER and were similarly impressed when he also produced his camp album. Michael is an entertainment lawyer living in Santa Monica. His clients all have name recognition but Michael is refreshingly unaffected by it all. His son Matt who will be at camp this summer plays soccer for coach JEFF MELVION...JEFF continues to write for television while we are all still enjoying the reruns of Northern Exposure...JIM BUGSY BERGER is an executive with Daimler Chrysler living in Detroit with his wife and three children. When Jim asked her who the master of all campers was she looked at daddy with her big eyes and said Leb?...STEVE RICHMAN is a lawyer in Cleveland but in his spare time is the chairperson of an event that he created for The Make A Wish Foundation. Steve got tired of all those fund raising dinners that benefited children that did not include children on the guest list. He came up with KIDZAFFAIR: a unique, fun filled, kid-friendly charity bash at the Great Lakes Science Center in Cleveland. Here s my plug for Steve: Anyone interested in providing autographed memorabilia, celebrity appearances, or other prizes for auction call Steve (440)- 498-1363...JOEL RICHMAN will be welcoming a new baby in February and other brother DENNIS RICHMAN is expecting baby #2 in June...LARRY GREEN has published a book entitled The Founding Mother about heroines of the American Revolution. KEVIN O GRADY asks the question, Has anyone topped my five musicals directed at NSC?. Does anyone know the answer to that question? Kevin is the assistant head master at the largest non orthodox Jewish Day School in L.A. DR. JON HANDLER was in the news recently. He was homebound from his emergency room shift at Chicago s Northwestern Memorial Hospital when a dramatic car accident occurred two cars ahead. Fortunately Jon carried some equipment with him and managed to keep everyone alive in the dark until help arrived. Some of his work in rescuing the five seriously injured passengers was shown in dramatic footage on T.V. Jon is no stranger to local television news. Reporters often ask him to comment for the news. We re very proud of him since he also moonlights at North Star as a Camp Doctor. There s nothing that Jon hasn t seen or can t handle except maybe little kids in pain. Aside from that fact, Jon is our first second generation Camp Doc. (Hence a new plaque)...his dad Dr. Ray Handler still comes every year to check on Jon to make sure he is carrying on the tradition...little DEBBIE HANDLER who used to come to camp with mom and dad now is a new mom living in Northbrook...Brother DAVID is a lawyer in Chicago. All live in Northbrook fulfilling their parents dream...congratulations to ANDY ALBERT who was recently married in Winnetka, IL...DUKE and BETTY MARX will be sailing their sailboat, The Distant Drum, around the world. They will be at sea for a year and a half. They have already done a trans Atlantic crossing with the Christopher Columbus Floatilla so they were looking for new challenges. We wish them favorable winds and safe sailing. Duke has always been very generous in sharing his trips with us at Post Camp with slides and travelogue. We re anxiously awaiting thier return. 1970-1980 MARK LEVY is working in Mill Valley, CA. He just recieved a promotion to Divisional Director of People and Learning for Best Buy Corp. NORTH STAR SCHOLARSHIP FUND Community is our scarcest commodity in the 1990 s warns Mary Pipher, clinical psychologist, and author of The Shelter of Each Other. Parents have no real community to back up the values that they try to teach their children. The media, she sadly explains, defines our community, and the electronic village is our hometown. Pipher states that camp is an answer. The best camps are creating the best of what existed in the 1940 s..a sense of shared purpose, Enter camp - a community created exclusively for children, where they can cultivate their roots and find their wings. Camp is about relationships, getting along, belonging and feeling capable and significant. Pipher specifies that camp professionals can teach children an aesthetic pleasure, a solace, an appreciation for the world around them. Indeed, our role on the threshold of the twenty-first century is paramount; we must broadcast to America that every child needs a camp experience. We know we re preaching to the choir. We don t have to tell our alumni this. You tell us every chance you get. We know how meaningful camp has been to you. We do however need your help. Our kids are in trouble in this country and you can make a difference. Into our office this week came a letter from alumni MICHAEL PERLOW. In his letter he stated, A few years ago my wife and I attended the 50th year alumni reunion. That weekend confirmed for me that all those marvelous feelings, dreams, and memories that I had were real. It gave credibility to my belief that I had a good childhood and strong foundation. I respect the work that you are doing and the kindness you have shown thousands of young people enabling them to make their dreams and futures be good ones. With Michael s letter came the largest contribution to date to our scholarship fund. Because of Michael and Sandra many inner city boys lives may be changed forever. He has given a gift of opportunity. These boys will be able to attend camp every summer until they chose not to attend. This gift was another reminder of the wonderful community that extends from camp. Thank-you to all of you who have remembered the Scholarship Fund. Give a gift of an opportunity. It s a great way to acknowledge a Bar Mitzvah or a super counselor at camp. All contributions can be made payable to the North Star Scholarship Fund and sent to our camp office. All donations go directly to supplying camperships.
