Aggregate M&A spending decreased as well. In November 55.8% less was spent on deals compared to October. U.S. private equity activity decreased in November, down 13.4% from October. There were 97 deals in November compared to 111 in October. Aggregate base equity decreased as well, down by 44.7% to $13.5 billion from October's $24.4. 2 US Middle Market Monitor 3 US Sector Activity & Value 4 Sector Spotlight: Health Services 5 US Strategic Buyer Report 5 US Private Equity Report 6 Top US Advisors 7 Top US Deals Scoreboard Over the past 3 months, the sectors that have seen the biggest increases in M&A deal activity, relative to the same three month period one year ago, have been: Commercial Services (538 vs. 49), Retail Trade (129 vs. 115), Health Services (16 vs. 153), Miscellaneous (1 vs. 5), and Consumer Durables (62 vs. 58). Ten of the 21 sectors tracked by FactSet Mergerstat posted relative gains in deal flow over the last three months compared to the same three months one year prior. Over the past 3 months, the sectors that have seen the biggest declines in M&A deal volume, relative to the same three month period one year ago have been: Consumer Services (214 vs. 253), Industrial Services (113 vs. 149), Finance (415 vs. 448), Producer Manufacturing (176 vs. 198), and Process Industries (14 vs. 12). Eleven of the 21 sectors tracked by FactSet Mergerstat posted negative relative losses in deal flow over the last three months compared to the same three months one year prior, for a combined loss of 186 deals. Topping the list of the largest deals announced in November are: Canadian Pacific Railway Ltd.'s offer to acquire Norfolk Southern Corp. for $27.4 billion; Molson Coors Brewing Co.'s agreement to acquire the remaining 58% majority stake in MillerCoors LLC from SABMiller Plc for $12 billion; Marriott International, Inc. agreeing to acquire Starwood Hotels & Resorts Worldwide, Inc. for $11.6 billion; Air Liquide SA's agreement to acquire Airgas, Inc. for $1.3 billion; Weyerhaeuser Co.'s deal to acquire Plum Creek Timber Co., Inc. for $8.4 billion. Canadian firms were the biggest buyers of U.S. companies in November. They announced 29 deals for the month, with U.K. companies in second with 22 deals, followed by France, Japan and Australia. The largest deal to purchase a U.S. business was the Canada-based Canadian Pacific Railway Ltd.'s offer to acquire Norfolk Southern Corp. for $27.4 billion. U.K. firms were the biggest sellers to U.S. firms with 33 deals, followed by Canada, Germany and Ireland. The largest U.S. deal to acquire a foreign company was Activision Blizzard, Inc. entering an agreement to acquire the Ireland-based King Digital Entertainment Plc for $5.7 billion.
