2 CUSTOMER SUCCESS STORY: CA TECHNOLOGIES SEPTEMBER 2014 Business Helping customers take advantage of the application economy CA Technologies provides software that enables organizations to seize new opportunities and embrace change. The company offers industry-leading solutions across mobile, mainframe, distributed, virtual and cloud environments. Recognized as a leader by industry analysts, CA Technologies has been hailed as one of the World s 100 Most Innovative Companies by Forbes and identified as one of the greenest companies in the US by Newsweek. The software company helps organizations drive enterprise-wide productivity, offer differentiated user experiences and accelerate growth. Its goal is to be a key trusted partner for its customers in today s application economy. Challenge Enabling an increasingly mobile workforce CA Technologies has been quick to realize the growing importance of mobile applications for both its customers and employees. As Mike Mendelsohn, Security Advisor, Global Information Systems (GIS) at CA Technologies, explains, We ve been supporting mobility in the workplace for the last five years, but in the last 12 months its importance as a strategic business initiative has sky-rocketed. We needed to empower our employees with mobile applications that enable them to work effectively from any location and any device. In excess of 95 percent of CA Technologies employees regularly use mobile devices to access corporate applications from sales people viewing customer records during meetings to consultants booking travel while commuting. These employees access hundreds of mobile applications every day from their ios and Android devices, including both CA Technologies and third-party solutions. From Salesforce for customer relationship management and SAP for enterprise resource planning to CA Cloud Service Management for logging IT issues, users needed fast access to both native and web-based mobile apps. Many of these solutions, however, contain confidential or sensitive company data. Providing adequate security for a mobile workforce without impacting accessibility was a key concern, explains Mendelsohn. If employees are unable to access the mobile app they need in minutes and in a minimal amount of steps, it becomes frustrating, and quickly impacts productivity and potentially customer service levels. These issues have a direct impact on IT resources. Employee problems accessing applications from mobile devices were creating more work for the CA Technologies service desk team, with around 2,000 tickets a month relating to sign-in issues. The economics of the problem were hitting both the top and bottom line for CA Technologies.
3 CUSTOMER SUCCESS STORY: CA TECHNOLOGIES SEPTEMBER 2014 Solution A mobile workforce enablement solution The OneAccess app enables employees to access key apps quickly and easily using single sign-on. Mike Mendelsohn Security Advisor, Global Information Systems, CA Technologies To simplify access to apps for CA Technologies employees, Mendelsohn and his team developed a mobile workforce enablement solution. GIS wanted to take a simple approach that would leverage existing investments and support the development of new apps. It defined three clear steps to the initiative: 1. Provide mobile access to existing Web applications 2. Develop secure and convenient native apps offering an optimized experience 3. Deliver and manage a large number of apps across all employees. We had a number of existing Web applications that we wanted to extend to the mobile platform, explains Mendelsohn. As most of these applications rendered well in Safari and Chrome, we decided to extend these applications first to provide immediate value to employees. To provide mobile access to existing Web applications, GIS developed a deviceagnostic mobile app, called OneAccess, using CA Single Sign-On and CA Mobile API Gateway. As a result, OneAccess provides unified access to Web applications regardless of if an employee is using a laptop or mobile device, delivering authentication, authorization and single sign-on. OneAccess also acts as a mobile gateway to other native and third-party applications used by CA Technologies employees. CA Mobile API Gateway has an inbuilt Mobile Software Development Kit that enabled our developers to embed securing directly into the app, taking advantage of the single sign-on capabilities offered by CA Single Sign-On, comments Mendelsohn. For those existing Web applications that would not deliver the desired mobile experience to employees, CA Technologies has embarked on a number of native app projects. To help simplify the deployment of these and other apps, GIS is using CA Mobile Device Management. As Mendelsohn explains, CA Mobile Device Management enables us to seamlessly push new apps to employees devices while safeguarding security. Simplified access and authentication The OneAccess app currently encompasses a small number of business applications for example Salesforce, SuccessFactors, SumTotal LMS, CarlsonWagonlit Travel, and SAP along with various internal applications. Once the solution extends beyond 30 apps, users will be presented with a personalized view, which will display the apps most relevant to their job role and those most frequently downloaded a familiar approach used by ios and Android app stores.
4 CUSTOMER SUCCESS STORY: CA TECHNOLOGIES SEPTEMBER 2014 The solution uses a combination of CA Single Sign-On and CA Mobile API Gateway to authenticate users based on domain credentials, which are in turn exchanged for an OAuth (open standard for authorization) token. This enables employees to access relevant apps featured within OneAccess without re-entering their account details. Although CA Single Sign-On manages the initial authentication process, CA Mobile API Gateway has enabled GIS to integrate this authentication across multiple applications. OneAccess is a device-agnostic app allowing unified access via single sign-on CA Mobile API Gateway brings all the APIs together, which means it s much easier for our developers to integrate and secure the apps, explains Mendelsohn. In total around 100 APIs are managed using the solution, but this number is growing all the time as we add more apps to OneAccess. The team is currently working on a solution to automatically customize the portfolio of apps that appear on each user s mobile device. We plan to use the CA Identity Suite to define the apps that appear on OneAccess, based on users job roles, explains Mendelsohn. The solution will also facilitate self-service password and account resets in the future.
5 CUSTOMER SUCCESS STORY: CA TECHNOLOGIES SEPTEMBER 2014 Benefit A more effective mobile workforce With better access to mobile apps, employees have greater flexibility and can work more efficiently. Mike Mendelsohn Security Advisor, Global Information Systems, CA Technologies OneAccess has been deployed to 1,000 users with great success, and will be implemented across all 13,000 CA Technologies employees in the future. CA Mobile API Gateway Suite, CA Single Sign-On and CA Mobile Device Management have been fundamental to the success of the project, says Mendelsohn. Using the solutions has enabled us to integrate the apps despite the many different platforms being used. As a result of the mobile enablement project, CA Technologies will be able to: Accelerate app development and delivery, improving employee satisfaction and productivity Reduce the volume of app-related service desk tickets, thereby increasing IT efficiency Enhance security while improving the mobile experience for employees.
