Military Spouses of Newport (MSoN) Scholarship 2015 Spouse Scholarship Application This is an application for scholarships awarded by the MSoN Scholarship Committee for 2015. If you meet all of the eligibility criteria, MSoN encourages you to complete this application. You must submit all the necessary materials to complete the application package by April 15thd, 2015 to be considered for an award. Please note that MSoN Scholarship applications from previous years are null and void; application forms have been revised. Scholarship: The Military Spouses of Newport (MSoN) offers educational scholarships for spouses of active duty military service members. Eligibility: Scholarship applicants must meet all of the following eligibility criteria to be considered for an award: 1) Minimum Grade Point Average (GPA) of 2.5 on a 4.0 scale 2) Must be a high school graduate, completed a High School Equivalency Program (HEP), General Education Development test (GED), or be accepted to a college, professional program or certification program by May 2 nd, 2015. 3) The military sponsor must be an Active Duty Service Member, and meet one of the following criteria: a) is assigned to Naval Station Newport b) is attached to Naval Station Newport c) lives or resides within 35 miles of Newport, RI 4) Must be enrolled, or have applied to an accredited post-secondary institution or certification program 5) Not be a past recipient of this scholarship. 6) Not be a dependent or related to any member of the Scholarships Committee. 7) The applicant must be a recognized military dependent Applicants will be considered without regard to race, color, religion, national origin, rank of sponsor, sex, age, or financial need. Submission Requirements: In order to be considered for an award, your completed application package must fulfill all of the following scholarship requirements: 1. Applicants must meet all of the scholarship eligibility criteria. 2. Applicant must submit a completed application package. Application packages must include ALL of following: a) A completed MSoN Scholarship 2015 application. b) A sealed official copy of the applicant s school transcript(s). This will include your final high school transcript and/or any college transcripts (if applicable.) Only originals or certified copies are acceptable.
c) Two letters of recommendation from persons outside your family. Examples of acceptable sources for letters of recommendation include school faculty members, work supervisors, members of volunteer organizations, members of clergy, or members of the community who can attest to your character. No references to the applicant s name, gender or rank of sponsor should be used in the recommendation. For example, the term the applicant should be used in place of all pronouns that would infer gender, such as he or she. Selection Criteria: The following criteria will be used in judging application packages and selecting recipients for the 2015 MSoN Spouse Scholarship Awards: 1. Academic achievement including transcripts, test scores 2. Extracurricular activities community involvement, employment experience and volunteerism, honors and awards, achievements and/or recognitions 3. Essay 4. Sealed letters of recommendation 5. Copy of previous year s Tax Form (1040, 1040A or 1040EZ) Scholarship Awards: After anonymous judging has taken place, scholarship recipients and non-recipients will be notified via mail after May 9th, 2015. Scholarship recipients will be recognized at the MSoN Scholarship Awards Tea in June 2015; to which they and their families will be formally invited. The scholarship recipients monetary awards are for payment of tuition, books, and fees only. Checks will be paid directly to the school. Upon winning an award, each scholarship recipient must notify the MSoN Scholarship 2015 Committee by June 5th, 2015, the name of the college or university that they will be attending, as well as submit a copy of their acceptance letter and the address of the college Bursar or Financial Services Office. Scholarship monies must be disbursed before March 31, 2016 or the monies will be returned to the MSoN scholarship fund. Instructions for Submitting the Scholarship Application To be considered for an MSoN Scholarship award, all application packages must include the following components and comply with the stated instructions. Incomplete application packages will not be considered. The application must be typed and held together with a clip, NOT stapled. 1) All application packages must be submitted as hardcopies. Electronic versions will NOT be accepted. 2) Make sure that the MSoN Scholarship 2015 application is signed and dated in the two required places; the Privacy Act Statement, and the Scholarship Application Verification, thereby acknowledging all statements to be true and factual, that all worked contained is your original work, and that you are fully aware of all the rules and requirements of the application. 3) Make sure that you have included your transcripts. 4) Make sure that you complete the essay section. It must be typed using a 12 pt., Times New Roman font. Make sure to adhere to the instructions for minimum and maximum word length. The essay will be judged on writing ability, content, grammar and punctuation. 5) Make sure to include two (2) letters of recommendation, confidential and sealed. This means that the writers of both letters of recommendation must place their letters in sealed envelopes and sign across the sealed envelope flap. All application packages must be mailed to the address provided and submitted as a hardcopy. Hand-delivered applications will NOT be accepted. Applications should not be folded and should be submitted in a 10 x13 sized envelope. Applications must be postmarked by April 15th, 2015.
