Hospice Søndergård Part of the OK Foundation

Welcome to Søndergaard Hospice Søndergaard Hospice is a newly built hospice that accommodates 14 residents and is situated in the Søndergård area, close to the Måløv suburban train station. Søndergaard Hospice opened its doors to the first residents on 25 October 2010. Søndergaard Hospice was built with the support of the Realdania Foundation as a demonstration project for the Good Hospice Programme. Søndergaard Hospice is owned and run by the OK Foundation, which is a non-profit organisation in the area of nursing homes, psychiatric centres, accommodation for senior citizens, and hospices. All residential units look onto the small lake north of Søndergaard Hospice. There is emphasis on creating a homelike environment, and each resident is free to give a personal touch to the 36 sq.m. furnished unit that includes an en-suite bathroom. The layout of Søndergaard Hospice matches the building s overall functions, with shared areas for residents and staff functions located close to the entrance, so that all residents enjoy as much privacy as possible. The term hospice is derived from hospitum and means a guest house, and the act of showing hospitality. Søndergaard Hospice works according to the philosophy and principles for the palliative care and treatment of the critically ill and their closest relatives and friends. Søndergaard Hospice is a home where the terminally ill can spend the closing stage of their lives. Lise-Lotte Andersen Hospice Director

People who are seriously ill, for whom there is no cure, and for whom the focus is on alleviating symptoms and making life as tolerable as possible for them, in the final stages of their lives. The terminally ill person must have a wish to stay in a hospice; and must therefore have been informed of other alternatives, for example staying in his or her own home, or in hospital. Who needs to stay in a hospice? It is possible that the person s symptoms are alleviated to such a degree that he or she gains a longer lease of life than expected. This means that the terminally ill person may be able to return home for a while, before coming back to the hospice when the symptoms begin to return, if this is that person s wish. You and your own physician, or the physician currently responsible for your treatment, complete an application form. The application form can be downloaded from Søndergaard Hospice s website. It is sent by post or fax to Søndergaard Hospice, which is where all applications are considered. The applicant then receives a letter in reply to the application. Those who are most ill take precedence, and there is no wait- How can I be admitted to a hospice?

ing list as such. When there is a vacancy applicants will be given 1-2 days notice. You are free to apply to all hospices in Denmark, and the public sector defrays the costs of transport within the patient s own region of residence. This means that if you wish to accept a hospice place in another region of Denmark you may be required to pay your own transport expenses. What does it cost to stay at the hospice? What staff will I meet at the hospice? Residence at Søndergaard Hospice is free of charge, although co-resident friends or relatives are required to pay for their own meals. Søndergaard Hospice is staffed by an interdisciplinary team of highly specialised healthcare professionals, who are trained to alleviate symptoms, work together with the terminally ill, and assist relatives and friends. You will meet nurses, a physician and physiotherapist, service and kitchen staff, volunteers, the volunteer coordinator, and a secretary, matron and hospice director. The vicars from local churches in Måløv also visit the hospice.

Yes! Your closest relatives spouse, partner, friends or children may stay with you. Yes! Your pet is welcome as long as you can take care of it yourself in your own residential unit. Yes! You are allowed to smoke in your own residential unit. Besides your own home and the freedom to do as you wish with your time the hospice offers palliative care to alleviate your symptoms, support to live actively in the final stages of your life, room for your nearest and dearest, support to deal with the thoughts and emotions related to suffering from an incurable disease, and support for your relatives during your stay. Can my relatives stay with me at the hospice? Is it possible to bring my pet with me? Am I allowed to smoke? What else does the hospice offer? Before you choose Søndergaard Hospice you and/or your relatives are welcome to come and visit the hospice. Please call first to arrange a time for your visit, to make sure that you are expected and there is time to show you around.

The rights of the dying The right to be treated as a living human being, right until my death. The right to maintain a sense of hopefulness, however changing its focus may be.
