Dissertations at Beiersdorf Beiersdorf offers scientists seeking to write their PhD thesis, excellent opportunities in an attractive environment: our Skin Research Center in Hamburg, with more than 450 scientists, is one of the largest and most advanced research centers in Germany, and one of the most important in the world. From 2001 to 2009, we have supervised more than 80 dissertations in cooperation with numerous institutes and universities. In 2009, we went a step further and inaugurated our own internal PhD program. AS A PHD STUDENT AT BEIERSDORF, YOU WILL HAVE SEVERAL BENEFITS: challenging scientific topics of high relevance supervision by senior scientists at Beiersdorf and their scientific partners a high level of education, equivalent to renowned institutes and universities numerous scientific colloquia and seminars including related scientific areas participation in national or international congresses soft skills training, such as presentation techniques PAGE 3

Registration for the PhD program 1. Once you sign the contract with Beiersdorf AG, you will receive the focus of your dissertation. 2. Fill out the registration form and get a route card from your supervisor (for both see page 8). 3. Every year, your supervisor needs to confirm your participation in the compulsory activities and how many credits you have obtained. 4. You are required to attain 13 credits during your PhD period. 5. When you start to prepare for your PhD defense, give the route card to your supervisor. He/She will arrange for you to get your Certificate of Participation for the Beiersdorf PhD program (see page 9). PAGE 4

Activities to gain credits 1. SEMINARS a Scientific Colloquium 3 credits c Journal Club 3 credits Up to 10 times a year, there will be a scientific colloquium in which international scientists present new findings in their area of expertise. Each lecture, which is compulsory for every PhD student, usually lasts 2 hours. You can collect 3 credits for 80 % attendance during your PhD time. Every Beiersdorf PhD student is required to take part in the Journal Club (80% attendance), which takes place about twice a month for around 2 hours. New papers are presented and discussed by the students. Attendance with a paper presentation is compulsory and awarded 3 credits. b Research Seminar 4 credits The Skin and Life Science Seminar usually takes place once a month for 2 hours. Here some of our many scientists and engineers at Beiersdorf AG present new fi ndings, their projects, new methods and instruments, etc. and engage in discussion afterwards. About two or three times during their PhD time, every student is required to present his/her project, results, issues, and plans. Attendance (80 %) is compulsory and is awarded 4 credits. It is also possible to attend a comparable seminar. PAGE 5

2. COURSES a Get-together 1 credit Lab members from various research areas at Beiersdorf AG introduce and discuss new instruments and methods. 1 credit is awarded for attendance (80%). 4. PROJECT REPORT 2 credits Every quarter, you are required to prepare a report on your project, results, issues, and future plans. It is to be presented to the lab managers in your department and discussed afterwards. 2 credits are awarded for the quarterly report and presentation. b Scientific and non-scientific courses 1 (max. 3 credits) Credits can also be gained by taking part in any optional courses either scientific (e. g. instrument instructions or advanced scientific training) or non-scientific (e. g. presentation techniques). 1 credit is awarded for each course, with a maximum of 3 credits. 5. LECTURE 1 (max. 3 credits) Every student has the opportunity throughout his or her PhD period to attend a lecture on any subject (once a week) organized by a university or institute. For each course you will receive 1 credit, with a maximum of 3 credits. 3. NATIONAL OR INTERNATIONAL CONFERENCES 1 (max. 3 credits) Every PhD student has the opportunity to participate in 1 or 2 international or national conferences. Beiersdorf AG will bear the costs (prior approval is necessary). For each conference you will receive 1 credit, with a maximum of 3 credits. PAGE 6
