When you are over your limit... HELP is Available OLG.ca

OLG acknowledges the contribution of the following groups in the development of this brochure: Centre for Addiction and Mental Health Ontario Problem Gambling Helpline Ontario Problem Gambling Research Centre Responsible Gambling Council

What is Problem Gambling? Problem gambling is gambling that causes harm to someone s family or personal life, work, finances or health. Signs that gambling is a problem * Are you: Spending more money on gambling than you can afford? Losing track of time and gambling longer than you intend? Betting larger and larger amounts? Lying about how much you gamble? Criticized by others about your gambling? Allowing gambling to affect your family, job, health or finances? Trying to win back losses by gambling more? Gambling to get away from feelings of loneliness, depression, stress or other negative feelings? Feeling guilty about how much you have lost gambling? If you have said Yes to one or more of these questions, you may have a gambling problem. *Source: Centre for Addiction and Mental Health

What puts a person at higher risk?* Increased availability of gambling Growing up with gambling Starting to gamble at an early age A big win when starting to gamble Mistaken beliefs about the chance of winning Looking to gambling for relief from loneliness, boredom, or depression A tendency to be impulsive Financial problems Negative life events such as a loss or stress Gambling to cope with health concerns or physical pain Alcohol, drug, or other mental health problems *Source: Centre for Addiction and Mental Health

Tips to Avoid Gambling Problems OLG wants to promote a balanced approach to gaming. This is why we encourage all our patrons to remember these important tips: Set a limit you can afford, and stick to it, each time you gamble. Consider the money you spend gambling as the cost of your entertainment. Do not withdraw more than your original gambling limit from your bank and credit cards. Do not borrow money from family, friends or acquaintances to play at gaming facilities. Take frequent breaks. Seek counselling assistance as soon as you start losing more than you intended or can afford. In Ontario, the average gambler spends about 1% of the family s after tax income.* Spending less reduces your risk of problems Spending more increases your risk of problems *Source: Ontario Problem Gambling Research Centre

How can I get help? Services are available in many communities across Ontario for people experiencing problems related to gambling. For services in your area, call the Ontario Problem Gambling Helpline (OPGH) at 1-888-230-3505 or search the OPGH s online Treatment Directory at www.opgh.on.ca. This helpline is free, confidential, anonymous and available 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. Interpretation is available in over 170 different languages. Most problem gambling treatment services, funded by the Ministry of Health and Long-Term Care, involve individual or group counselling in your local community. Services are confidential. Appointments can usually be arranged in the evenings, if needed. Services are available for all age groups, and are available for family members or friends of problem gamblers. There is no cost for these problem gambling services. The OPGH also has information about self-help groups such as Gamblers Anonymous and Gam-Anon in your community. You may also want to check whether your place of work has an Employee Assistance Program (EAP) that offers counselling. Outside Ontario? You can contact the OPGH 519-439-0174 www.opgh.on.ca For Helplines in other locations, US residents can contact National Council on Problem Gambling Helpline 1-800-522-4700

If I m in financial trouble, what can I do? The OPGH can also provide referrals to credit and debt counselling services in your community. These services provide counselling and assistance with debt management and protection of family assets for people in crisis. I m concerned about my privacy Confidentiality of information is an essential element in all treatment services. Personal information will be kept confidential. Problem gambling treatment providers are not there to judge, they are there to help. Other information sources In addition to the OPGH, you can find other information, news, research and resources about gambling and problem gambling on the following Web sites: The Centre for Addiction and Mental Health www.problemgambling.ca The Ontario Problem Gambling Research Centre www.gamblingresearch.org The Responsible Gambling Council www.responsiblegambling.org OLG wants to keep people informed about options available should they experience problems with gambling.

Self-exclusion OLG Casinos, Slots and Resort Casinos offer a self-exclusion program for people who want to take a break from gambling. Everyone who enters the program signs a self-exclusion form and agrees not to return to a gaming site in Ontario. Self-exclusion can be a positive step in the recovery process, and for many people it works best when accompanied by treatment or counselling. Patrons can sign up to self-exclude in person at any Ontario gaming facility. For information about this program, contact Security at your local gaming facility. For the most up-to-date information about problem gambling services call the Ontario Problem Gambling Helpline at 1-888-230-3505.
