Employee Information Pack General Information S1 What is a Credit Union? A credit union is authorised by the Prudential Regulation Authority and regulated by the Financial Conduct Authority and the Prudential Regulation Authority, so operate to all the same high standards as all other financial institutions. It is a not-for-profit organisation which operates as a financial co-operative and offers services such as saving accounts and low-cost loans to its members. In a credit union, members pool their savings to lend to one another and may also help to run the credit union. As co-operatives, credit unions are founded on the values of self-help. Their top priority is to serve members interests. Credit unions are not driven to make money for external shareholders, but rather make decisions in the best interest of their members. What are the main benefits? Easy to join Low joining fee Secure savings Surplus profits are returned as dividends on savings accounts and reinvested in the development of services and products for the members Affordable loans which are easy to apply for Who can join? Anyone who lives or works in Tees Valley, Durham or North Yorkshire, or qualifies through one of our employer partners. What identification do you need to provide? We will require confirmation of your employment. We are also require by law to ask for sight of a recent and original (ie: not photocopied or scanned) item confirming your address and identity from the list below: Full UK driving licence or provisional UK driving licence with the counterpart. Bank statement, utility bill (not mobile phone), benefit statement or Inland Revenue tax notification. Valid EU passport (or other passport with a valid right to remain). How can you withdraw your money? By Faster Payment Service (FPS) to a nominated bank account. I ve already got a savings account with a bank or building society, why should I join? Some members make an ethical choice to save regularly with their local credit union, in addition to using savings accounts from high street banks and building societies. In this way, members are choosing to support their local community and their local economy by helping the credit union to establish a big pool of savings which can then be lent out to members who need a loan. Your money is safe and you could be earning a dividend. Generally speaking, if more local residents borrow money from their local credit union instead of using doorstep lenders, pawn brokers and pay-weekly stores, less interest is paid back. This means that residents have more money in their pockets to spend on things they need, benefiting them individually, plus the local and regional economy. Peace of mind One benefit of saving with Tees Credit Union is that your savings are covered by the Financial Services Compensation Scheme, (FSCS) which we pay into in order to protect our members savings. The FSCS can pay compensation to depositors if a credit union is unable to meet its financial obligations and all of our depositors are covered by the scheme. In respect of deposits, an eligible depositor is entitled to claim up to 85,000. The 85,000 limit is not for each separate account but, relates to the combined amount in all the eligible depositor s accounts with the credit union, including their share of any joint account. For further information about the scheme (including the amounts covered and eligibility to claim) please ask a member of staff, refer to the FSCS website www.fscs.org.uk or call 0800 678 1100.
