What makes a gre at he art program? Skilled physicians and staff, advanced technology, great outcomes with convenient access for the region.... Find it with Carson Tahoe. As part of the Carson Tahoe Health System, the region s finest physicians are bringing state-of-the-art expertise to cardiac diagnostics, interventional treatment options, open heart surgery and cardiac rehabilitation. In fact, several of our physicians are nationally recognized experts who coach other physicians in advanced cardiac procedures. Carson Tahoe Cardiology (CTC) has raised the bar on skilled interventional cardiology procedures in northern Nevada with the radial artery (wrist) approach (RTA) to heart catheterization procedures. Traditionally a procedure to clear the main artery on the front part of the heart would be performed through the femoral artery (leg/groin) area. Studies have shown that the RTA results in shorter procedure times, reduces procedure risks and allows for faster recovery. Currently CTC is the only cardiology practice in northern Nevada to regularly use this revolutionary procedure. CTC has informational videos online, including an actual RTA procedure and interviews of our cardiologist addressing common questions surrounding heart disease. Visit Carson Tahoe s heart library to access these videos at CarsonTahoeHeart.com. Most insurance plans accepted including: HHP, Health First, Universal and Medicare. 2

Carson Tahoe Cardiology Rooted in our community for over 30 years, Carson Tahoe Cardiology (CTC) brings skill and experience to Carson City and the surrounding communities. With fellowship trained, board-certified cardiologists and specially trained physician assistants & nurse practitioners, Carson Tahoe Cardiology effectively treats the most advanced cases in cardiac care. Specializing in both diagnostic and interventional cardiology, our physicians are the leading experts of heart care in Northern Nevada and Eastern California. Now, Carson Tahoe Cardiologists are more local than ever, with clinics in Carson City, Minden, Yerington, South Lake Tahoe, Mammoth Lakes and Reno. Interventional Cardiology What Is It? Interventional cardiology is catheter-based treatment for heart disease performed by fellowship trained cardiologists. It is minimally invasive, performed by inserting a catheter (small hollow plastic tube) through a small incision in the groin area or wrist. The catheter is guided toward the heart or vascular system through the use of real-time x-ray. Two types of interventional procedures performed are balloon angioplasty/coronary stents and carotid/peripheral vascular stents used to open arteries which have narrowed due to cholesterol buildup. Exclusive at Carson Tahoe, specially trained interventional cardiologists perform stent placement through a radial approach (accessing the radial artery through the right wrist) which has shown to improved patient safety and comfort. Who Performs It? Carson Tahoe s Fellowship Trained Interventional Cardiologists Where Is It Performed? Interventional cardiology procedures are performed in one of the three stateof-the-art catheterization labs located inside Carson Tahoe Regional Medical Center, 1600 Medical Parkway, Carson City. Catheterization/Vascular Lab The catheterization lab will accommodate cardiac and interventional radiology procedures as well as any peripheral vascular intervention. Carson Tahoe s catheterization labs provides the latest diagnostic and interventional equipment to meet the needs of the attending cardiologists and radiologists while focusing on the comfort and positive outcomes of the patient. Available 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, 365 days a year for patient care needs, Carson Tahoe Regional Medical Center s catheterization labs support the entire region. For more information please contact Carson Tahoe Cardiology at (775) 445.7650. 4

Cardiac Imaging Heart experts at Carson Tahoe diagnose heart and blood vessel problems using noninvasive and minimally invasive approaches. Over the years, these specialists have honed their cardiac imaging techniques and have combined it with the most advanced technology used around the world. Patients who come to Carson Tahoe Regional Medical Center benefit from the unique collaboration of experts. Cardiovascular Imaging is jointly staffed by both cardiologists and radiologists with extensive cardiac imaging expertise. The goal is to provide the right test for the right patient at the right time, including state-of-the-art tests not widely available. Carson Tahoe Cardiac Imaging offers the full range of advanced imaging technologies. To us, Putting patients first also means keeping costs down. To do so, Carson Tahoe performs procedures in an outpatient hospital department whenever appropriate. Unlike other healthcare facilities that require all tests be performed within the hospital (which is more costly), our patients can receive specific diagnostic testing in an outpatient setting with outpatient prices. Cardiac Imaging Outpatient procedures are generally less than 1/3 the price compared to procedures performed in a hospital setting. Potentially saving patients thousands of dollars for the same procedure. When an imaging procedure can be performed in the cardiac imaging outpatient department, CTH s Centralized Schedulers (775) 445.5500 will schedule patients accordingly. Located at 1470 Medical Parkway 1st floor, Carson City. Procedures that Can Be Done At The Cardiac Imaging Outpatient Department: Complete Echocardiograms (adults only) Contrast and Bubble studies (only if added on to a current study being done) Stress Echocardiograms (treadmill stress only) Rest and Exercise Nuclear Cardiac Stress Studies (treadmill and Lexiscan) Vascular Ultrasound (carotid and peripheral venous and arterial exams) 5

Carson Tahoe recognizes the extraordinary talent of its acclaimed cardiac surgery team, as well as the program s superior clinical results that allows Carson Tahoe to rise above the rest. OPEN HE ART SURGERY PROGRAM Dr. Todd Chapman is a board-certified heart surgeon with over 20 years of experience. He has performed over 900 open heart surgeries at Carson Tahoe Regional Medical Center since the program began in 2006. Dr. Chapman is a highly skilled surgeon and he credits his incredible staff s teamwork as instrumental in making this great achievement possible. He is supported by two cardiovascular surgical suites at Carson Tahoe and the CardioOne Open Heart Surgery Program. CARDIOONE PROGRAM Carson Tahoe is proud to be the only hospital in Northern Nevada to offer the CardioONE open heart surgery program. This unique approach allows for presurgery, recovery, and post-surgery care to take place in one room, often with the same cardiac team caring for the patient the entire time. As a result, there is increased patient and family satisfaction and the length of stay can be decreased by one full day. CONGESTIVE HE ART FAILURE CLINIC (CHF) The CHF clinic, designed to improve heart function, is available to qualified cardiac patients, after a hospital discharge. The CHF Clinic provides information and education to patients to help reduce hospital admissions and readmissions. 10

Cardiac Rehabilitation The Carson Tahoe Rehabilitation Program is the first in Nevada to be accredited by the American Association of Cardiovascular and Pulmonary Rehabilitation. This is a three month course offering educational opportunities, monitored exercises and support. Patients will learn about risk factors that affect their heart such as obesity, diabetes, smoking, high stress levels, hypertension, abnormal cholesterol lipid values and family health history. To help adopt new and healthier lifestyles, classes and information are provided on nutrition and healthy cooking, as well as exercise and stress management. Improving cardiac fitness and endurance is the primary goal to bettering your overall health. The professional staff will teach patients how to exercise safely based on the individual s personal fitness level. The program s flexibility allows goals to be reached safely and effectively. During each exercise session, patients heart rhythm will be continuously monitored. The staff notes progress made in order to ensure that each individual s goals are met. Whether patients had a heart attack, stable angina, coronary artery disease, bypass surgery or balloon angioplasty, cardiac rehabilitation may be the opportunity to take control of their health. To schedule a patient for Carson Tahoe Cardiac Rehibilitation call (775) 445.7310. Smoking Cessation Program Carson Tahoe Cardiology s (CTC) Smoking Cessation 7 Week Program, lead by CTC s Carmella Downing, PAC, offers support, education, information and motivation to quit smoking for good. Quitting smoking is not easy. Smoking tobacco is a physical, psychological and social addiction. This program of the American Lung Association is in group support format where active participation is encouraged. Each hour long session will allow the participant to connect with others also trying to quit and provide a much needed support system. A new 7 week program starts every other month.
