A Review process determines whether a student can continue into the Year of music studies Advising (major): Incoming majors are advised by either the Coordinator of Undergraduate Studies in Music or the Coordinator of Music Education. Faculty members advise current majors before each semester. Advising (): by Music department advisors Minimum Grades/GPA: C or better in all required music courses Teacher Licensure: YES (BM in Music Education only) Night Classes Available: VERY FEW (no majors can be completed at night) Weekend Classes Available: NO Other information: Scholarships available Contact Person: Dr. James A. Grymes, Coordinator of Undergraduate Studies in Music, 346 Robinson Hall for the Performing Arts, jagrymes@uncc.edu Program : The Department of Music offers a B.A. degree in Music, which is a relatively structured program, and B.M. degrees in Music Education and Performance, which are very structured programs. All three degrees typically require eight semesters of study, regardless of previous coursework. All music majors must take 47 hours in the, which includes private lessons, ensembles, music theory, ear training, piano, and music history. In addition to the, B.A. in Music majors must take 18 hours of a designated minor or second major and 21 hours of electives and additional music classes; B.M. in Music Education majors must take 45 hours of education courses; and B.M. in Performance majors must take 39 hours of specialized music courses. Core Music Curriculum General Education 47 hours Required courses in the major will satisfy university requirements for Writing Intensive and Oral Communications. 34 hours Students must also meet Foreign Language proficiency through the 1202 level. courses do not satisfy related work requirements for the major. BA BM in Music Education BM in Performance BA in Music Curriculum 39 Hours BA in Music majors must complete 18 hours of a a second major and 21 hours of electives and additional music classes. The culminating experience for this degree is an academic senior project. See the department website for more information about these requirements. 45 Hours BM in Music Education majors must complete 45 hours of education courses that lead to a K12 teaching license in the State of North Carolina. The culminating experiences for this degree are a senior recital and student teaching. See the department website for more information about these requirements. 39 Hours BM in Performance majors must complete 39 hours of specialized music courses, including additional ensembles and courses in conducting, pedagogy, technology, and business.
