Project Management College FREE UNIVERSITY Masters Certificate in Program Management For Your Success Master s Certification in Program Management from

Sponsor s Note Dear Colleague, Project Management College (PMC) is now in it s 4th year of operation, and we have been truly delighted with the progress and success of this program. We have already trained many individuals, from all sectors, who now have the skills and knowledge to manage large scale projects according to international standards and practice, and have certification to back this up. Through PMC, we have given organisations in Georgia the opportunity to establish a common approach to project management, and offer their staff a real career development plan. Now, we are pleased to announce the launch of an entirely new curriculum in Program Management, which again will be subsidised by BP & it s Oil & Gas Co-Venturers, and will be offered to all graduates of the Project Management curriculum, or non-graduates who have passed the PMP Certification. Program Management is defined as the co-ordinated management of a related series of projects over a specific period of time in order to accomplish broad business goals, to which the individual projects contribute. Having successfully introduced the core skills of project management, we are now providing you with the opportunity to develop your skills further, preparing you to take on greater responsibility and progress onwards in your careers, whilst earning another internationally recognised certificate with a Masters Certificate in Program Management from George Washington University and ESI International. This course of study will also help prepare you for the Project Management Institute Program Management Professional (PgMP ) Certification. Our goal with PMC has been to improve the long term capacity for project management in Georgia, and by introducing this new curriculum, we are taking another great step towards achieving this. It will allow companies in Georgia to build their project organizations according to world class standards, and develop a team of managers capable of thinking and acting strategically and delivering programs that contribute to greatly improved overall performance. All courses from the new curriculum are again delivered by ESI International and their team of highly experienced and engaging instructors. We are also pleased to continue our partnership with Free University, who will host the training and manage the program. We hope you will take this opportunity to take your skills to the next level! Neil Dunn General Manager BP Georgia 2

In addition to earning a wide variety of certificates, ESI students can also earn credit toward GWU s Master of Science in Project Management. The university will award advanced standing to those students who earn an ESI/GWU Master s Certificate within five years of starting the Master s degree program. ESI International has helped people around the world improve the way they manage their projects, contracts, requirements and vendors. Since 1981, ESI has worked with more than 1000 clients worldwide to develop customised on-site training, public training, e-training, assessments and consulting programs. Our clients include many global Fortune 500 corporations such as BP, Barclays, Cisco, GlaxoSmithKline, ABB, Ericsson, and many more. ESI International and PMI With 382,210 members in 172 countries from various industries, PMI is the largest project management association in the world. Beyond academic credentials, certification by the Project Management Institute (PMI ) as a Project Management Professional (PMP ) is the industry foremost credential and is a benchmark for many of the world s largest corporations for the advancement and employment within project management. To achieve PMP certification, each candidate must satisfy all educational and experiential requirements established by PMI and must demonstrate an acceptable and valid level of understanding and knowledge about project management that is tested by the Project Management Professional Certification Examination. This exam is held by PMI itself and is not associated to PMC. PMC shall only be responsible to prepare each student for this exam as of today, the pass rate for ESI-taught students worldwide who have undertaken the full PM curriculum is 98%. Free University Free University was established in 2007. Today Free University comprises three schools - Business School (ESM), Institute of Asia and Africa and Law School delivering academic programs at undergraduate, graduate and doctorate levels. In addition, Free University conducts a wide array of short-term courses, runs several research centres and summer school programs. About 600 students attend Free University, of which 492 are enrolled in undergraduate programs, 88 are graduate students and 6 pursue doctorate studies. Free University has a broad network of partners, among them professional organizations, such as Chartwell Education Group, Microsoft IT Academy, AIESEC, The European Federation of Schools (FEDE), and universities worldwide - Mosbach University of Cooperative Education, Montana University, University of Kairo, Xian Jiaotong University, to name the few. In 2009, Free University concluded the renovation of its new building, which has modern infrastructure and is equipped with modern technologies, thus providing for learning conducive environment. Welcome Note Opportunities for life-long learning and continuous professional development are becoming increasingly important for individual s career advancement. Free University has always strived to provide such opportunities to people willing to gain new knowledge and skills no matter what occupation they come from or what stage of their lives they are at. The idea appealed to us the moment we learned about the Project Management College initiative by BP and it s oil & gas co-venturers as it is fully in the spirit of Free University. We are proud to partner with BP in building up a strong cohort of Georgian project managers and thus contribute to the development of country s private and public sectors. We are especially dedicated to provide for forming the team of Georgian trainers with assistance from ESI International. We consider this capacity to be key for continuity of PMC program and its adherence to the established standards of excellence. Prof. Dr. Guram Chikovani Rector Free University 3

As a program manager you need to have a firm grasp of project management but also a set of business, marketing and leadership skills that differ vastly from the project manager. Participants will focus not only technical competence, but also the ability to develop a big picture strategy, with a clear focus on delivering benefits aligned with the organization s goals and objectives. Structure and lead an effort to assess project problems rapidly Determine the root causes of identified problems Develop a recovery plan for any troubled project Provide leadership to turn the project around Identify and manage signs of trouble early on in a project 5

Requirements Management: A Key to Project Success This course goes far beyond requirements gathering and deals with requirements management. Explore evaluation techniques that allow you to verify requirements early in the project life-cycle so as to avoid costly rework further down the line. Learn how to manage scope creep and clashes between project sponsors and project sponsors, through relationship management and negotiation techniques. Apply a requirements management process to a project life-cycle Use proper evaluation techniques to verify and gain agreement upon requirements that meet specific business and technical objectives Identify formal and informal techniques to manage stakeholder relationships within the requirements management process Implement a change management process to control scope creep Leading High-Performing Teams Teams make decisions every day, and they deal with dilemmas and unplanned events that must be resolved within specified times, budgets and other parameters. That fact forms the basis of this fast-paced, highly engaging workplace simulation. Project managers who have completed this simulation tell us they have two breakthrough insights that shatter myths and result in significant benefits to themselves and their organizations. See yourself as a leader (and more than just a manager) Apply the five practices of exemplary leaders Employ the eight dimensions of highperforming teams Explain how these skills are interwoven and interdependent Integrate leadership and teamwork skills into managing projects Become a high-performing team member Unlocking the Power of Earned Value Management In this course you ll review key project documents to gain an understanding of their relationship to effective project evaluation and control using EVM. You ll explore the challenges and approaches involved in establishing a baseline and obtaining accurate, timely and useful information to measure project performance with EVM. You will benefit from relevant discussions with your peers and an experienced instructor. Working through an integrated case study designed to simulate real-world issues, problems and decisions, you ll gain insight and experience in determining a realistic assessment of where your project actually stands. This approach allows you to practice new skills and ask questions as you assimilate a broad array of practical experience that can be immediately applied upon your return to the workplace. Harness the power of EVM to control your project Indicate work progress in a more objective way within and across projects Properly relate cost, schedule and technical accomplishment Relate time-phased budgets to specific tasks and/or statements of work to create a useful and realistic baseline Supply managers with information at a practical level of summarisation Prepare an action plan and create an immediate impact to your organization s ability to effectively control projects 6

Critical Thinking & Problem Solving Through this course you will address the five types of critical thinking required in business environments; strategic, tactical, analytical and implicative. You will also learn a fivestep problem response process, covering; identifying and analysing problems and opportunities, analysing the environment, exploring potential responses and selecting and implementing the optimal response. Participants will have the opportunity to apply the concepts to a specific problem or opportunities from within their own business environments. Use different thought approaches at different times to yield better results Generate innovative responses to business problems and opportunities Assess your own thinking style preferences Think in the present to prepare for the future Determine the root cause of business problems and opportunities Apply different types of thinking for improved analysis and problem solving Assess possible responses accurately to select the optimal response Design and execute appropriate action plans Budget & Financial Management This course will help you understand the macro big picture and micro line item context and trends of finance as well as the mechanics of developing budgets. It will give you the necessary tools to make sound financial decisions for your business unit. Whether your goal is to stay on budget, increase overall cost savings or meet specific profitability targets, real-world exercises will help you become familiar with standard financial documents, and use budget and estimating methods and tools more effectively. Specifically, you ll review and discuss commonly used financial metrics to not only understand the numbers, but also to explore the not-so-obvious financial impacts of typical operating decisions and actions from a project to organizational level. After completing this course, you ll know how to gather, compile and prioritize financial data to develop, execute and manage a budget. You will also be better able to communicate financial and budgetary information, have greater confidence in assessing finances, and participate more effectively in the business decision-making process. Utilise ESI s Mindset Model to understand how finance and accounting influence management decisions Ask the right questions to successfully create, present, monitor and manage a budget Persuasively negotiate for financial resources Communicate financial information and results to stakeholders, executives, colleagues and project teams Correlate budget success with its presentation in financial reports Recognise the relationships between primary financial statement line items by calculating and examining relevant financial ratios 7
