Before going into the details Why OES 2015 and not OES 12? Decouple tying ourselves closely to SLES versions Need freedom to focus OES releases on value addition in the OES Stack. Why on SLES11 base and not SLES12? New SLES releases typically disruptive on OES. Adapting to latest SLES SP / SLES12 takes 6 to 9 months, even without adding new OES capabilities Changes in OES 2015, needed a stable base SLES11 gives us that When will it be available on SLES12 base? OES support on new SLES major version has always been on SP1 Similar plans at this time 20
NSS - Active Directory Integration Allows corporations with mandate to consolidate to one directory (AD) or Integrate MS shops acquired to continue to leverage NSS file system investment and keep NSS features / benefits. Retain IRF s / Visibility User maps via CIFS to NSS, and leverages AD group policies for client drive mappings NSS Storage Windows / AD Server Authentication Works for edirectory and AD environment Explorer plugin to manage rights on NSS volumes Kerberized CIFS access OES User Workstations 21
NSS - Active Directory Integration Additional capability Native AD User integration Kerberos Integration, Single Sign on Retains Novell Right Model, IRF s, Visibility, etc. Management Explorer Shell Extension to manage Trustees User Management using standard AD Tools Storage Management using traditional Novell Tools 22
NSS - Active Directory Integration Supports edir & AD Users at the same time ACL Migration Enabled Services / Features CIFS, DFS, DST & NCS Later : NetStorage, FTP, Salvage, NFMS Minimal impact on 3 rd Party Software Auditing, AV, Backup & HSM Introducing NIT Novell Identity Translator 23
SMB 2.0 SMB2.0 Features Reduced network traffic through usage of less number of verbs (19 verbs Vs 100+ in SMBv1) Suggested performance improvement ( Depends on overall system performance and other parameters) Increased Security (Usage of Kerberos (AD) and NLTM SSP (edir) for user authentication and HMAC-SHA256 for signing) Increased Scalability (Higher limits in terms of number of users, open files, number of shares, and also number of TCP connections per client) 24
SMB 2.0 Support in OES 2015 Achieve SMB 2.0 verb compliance. Enable Client communicate with OES using SMB 2.0 protocol. Implement all verbs needed for compliance. Performance measurement, base lining in OES Further optimizations post OES 2015 release. 25
SMB2.0 Support in Altair SMB 1 SMB 2.0 SMB 2.1 SMB3.0 Not Supported Extended Security Large MTU SMB over RDMA Optional Unicode, Oplocks DFS New Leasing model Multichannel Not Supported Compounding Resilient Handles Directory leasing Not Supported ECHO Dynamic Reauthentication Not Supported Pipelining Not Supported Not Supported Not Supported NT notify Durable Handles Multiple TCP connections from same client Support in Altair Post Altair 26
Large Storage Support Add support for > 8 TB NSS Pools Supports data center growing storage needs > 8TB volumes and file sizes Media Format Update needed Old and New pools can co-exist on the same server Why? NSS on-disk data structures contain 32-bit block numbers. Hence, pool size is restricted to 8 TB [** At all places here, TB = TiB = (1024)^4] Pools/Volumes are media compatible from NW to OES11 27
Large Storage Support Scope Allow creation of pools >8TB Allow co-existence of <8TB (old) pools and the new pools In place upgrade for old pools (to new pool type) is not planned for Altair Need for coexistence Supporting migration of data from existing OES nodes New pools created with NSS64 can't be migrated to pre OES 2015 nodes. Media Change Supported over AFP, CIFS & NCP New NCP Verbs added Novell Client updated to support large volumes and files 28
Where Are We with OES 2015? Authorized Beta launched at the end of September Tremendous interest in the Beta Program currently has 100 Beta Customers and Partners Interested in beta program? Drop an to Madhan P, Product Manager Hitesh Menghnani, Project Manager Looking forward to your participation and feedback in making OES 2015 the best ever OES release. 29
What s on the Radar
Open Enterprise Server 2015 SP1 Capella Features / Themes Targeted Availability: 2016 Enhance SMB Support NSS - AD Integration for File Access edirectory Updates File Stack Enhancements Defrag Performance Improvements Newer Windows & Mac platform support IPv6 (in a phased manner) 31
Customer Pain Points Improve the Update Mechanism Single Update channel for OES * (SLES and OES updates on same update channel) Proof of Concept in the works 32
Market Opportunities Focus on the File stack Gain maturity with AD and SMB2 support. Integrate storage tiering with NSS and include Cloud storage as an option. Enhance iprint Appliance to be an attractive option for OES customers to move to. Security and Standards Keep current with edirectory updates, add IPv6 support and built compliance with the Suite B security standard. File Appliance Combine NSS, AD support, CIFS, DST and a simple Web administration into an appliance that is attractive for net new file/storage customers. Think NetApp Appliance. 33
