VIRTUAL INSTRUCTION PROGRAM (VIP) PLANNING AND PREPARATION Hermiston School District December 2011
AGENDA Where is collegiate online learning headed? Where is K12 online learning headed? Recent Oregon legislation affecting online learning State of the state Current Oregon programs Program Mission Benchmarks and plans for Hermiston VIP
WHERE IS COLLEGIATE ONLINE LEARNING HEADED? In 2009 nearly 12 million post-secondary students in the United States took some or all of their classes online. By 2014, this number is expected to skyrocket to more than 22 million, according to data released recently by research firm Ambient Insight. A 2011 report from Marketdata Enterprises Inc. finds enrollments in online education programs account for 30 percent of all post-secondary education enrollments By 2015, the study predicts that 37 percent of all postsecondary enrollments will be in online programs.
COLLEGIATE ENROLLMENT TRENDS Going the Distance, 2011
HOW DO THE STUDENTS FEEL ABOUT ONLINE LEARNING? Going the Distance, 2011 Over 75% of current college students are either indifferent or prefer online learning
COLLEGIATE TRENDS Sixty-five percent of higher education institutions said that online learning was a critical part of their long-term strategy Over 6.1 million students were taking at least one online course during the fall 2010 term; an increase of 560,000 students over the number reported the previous year Going the Distance, 2011
WHERE IS COLLEGIATE ONLINE LEARNING HEADED?
LOCAL UNIVERSITY TRENDS This year marked the first time ever that EOU not only has more students online, but more students earning online credit, than students who are on our campuses. Without our online program, EOU would struggle to exist in today s collegiate market. President Davies, 2011 OSU offers 13 undergraduate degrees online, 18 minors online, and over 700 courses in more than 70 subjects. OSU Website, 2011 The growth and sophistication of technology have expanded the number of courses offered via distance learning to over 200; 2,476 students took at least one distance learning course in That represents a doubling in the number of courses offered the previous year and a 20% increase in student online enrollment. President Turner, BMCC Website, 2011
WHERE IS K12 ONLINE LEARNING HEADED? Oregon Over 10,000 students are currently enrolled in full time online learning experiences. Last year about 7,000 students were enrolled, an increase from 6,000 students in * Nationally In the year 2000, roughly 45,000 K 12 students took an online course. In 2009, more than 3 million K 12 students did., representing a 700% annual growth rate. What was originally a distance learning phenomenon no longer is.** Simultaneous explosion in home schooling from roughly 800,000 students in 1999 to roughly 2 million today was fueled largely by the rise of online learning and full-time virtual schools.** *Keeping Pace with K-12 Online Learning, 2011 **The Rise of K-12 Blended Learning, 2011
